Microsoft identifies KB5120233 as the August 11, 2026 cumulative security update for Windows Server 2025, OS build 26100.33296. It applies to all Windows Server 2025 editions and includes security fixes, improvements, and non-security updates from the previous month’s optional preview. Microsoft lists Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Microsoft Update Catalog, and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) as delivery channels.

On its KB5120233 support page, Microsoft lists a WSUS synchronization-error-details issue affecting KB5070881 and later updates. It does not list 0x80070306 or component-store corruption as a known issue. That omission does not establish that no other server can encounter the error; it means Microsoft’s published page does not identify it as a known issue.
What the reported case actually involved
A case report published September 7, 2026, by Old Sen’s Tales IT Help describes a physical Windows Server 2025 Standard server with Desktop Experience. The server was originally at build 26100.2033, received the update through WSUS, and failed with 0x80070306. The author says the host used en-US and zh-TW language components and ran SQL Server, IIS, and other services. These details describe that particular server; they are not established prerequisites for the failure.

In the report, DISM initially detected component-store corruption, and the first attempt to use /RestoreHealth lacked repair content. The author later supplied a repair source and reported clean health checks, but KB5120233 still failed. After reviewing CBS/CSI logs, the author suspected an inconsistent component-servicing state. Experiments involving language components and other servicing changes did not establish that language packs alone caused the problem. This is the administrator’s interpretation, not an independent Microsoft diagnosis.
What the administrator reported as the resolution
The author says a custom-media in-place repair upgrade, incorporating the relevant language components and updates, brought the server to build 26100.33296; KB5120233 then installed. The report also describes preparing database and service backups and recovery access before the operation. This is an anecdotal outcome on one Standard installation. It does not demonstrate that the same repair will work on a Datacenter server or on another server with the same error.

How to approach the failure without overreading the case
- Confirm the update and installation method. Check that the server is Windows Server 2025 and that the target is KB5120233. Note whether deployment is through Windows Update, WSUS, Windows Update for Business, or a Catalog download; the case report used WSUS, but it does not establish that WSUS caused the failure.
- If installing individual MSU files, follow Microsoft’s stated order. Microsoft’s KB5120233 instructions specify installing KB5043080 first, followed by KB5120233. The page also describes applying the package to mounted installation media and provides DISM and PowerShell methods for Catalog packages. Follow the applicable instructions on Microsoft’s support page rather than improvising package order.
- Assess servicing health, then evaluate the update result separately. The reported administrator found that correcting component-store health did not by itself make this update install. Treat a successful health check as useful diagnostic information, not proof that the KB5120233 failure is resolved.
- Review servicing logs if the failure persists. The case author used CBS/CSI logs to investigate the servicing state. The report does not provide an independently confirmed interpretation or establish a single log signature that diagnoses this error.
- Consider a repair upgrade only after planning recovery. The reported outcome followed an in-place repair upgrade using custom installation media. Before considering a similarly consequential operation, assess compatibility with the server’s roles and applications, and verify backups and a workable recovery route. The case report’s success is not a guarantee for another environment.
