Microsoft’s release-health notice gives October 13, 2026 as the end date, while its lifecycle table displays October 14, 2026 in Pacific Time. Treat October 13–14, 2026 as the operational cutoff. The October 2026 security update was the final update in mainstream support; servers now move into extended support.
What changed for Windows Server 2022
Mainstream support is the phase in which Microsoft provides the normal full scope of product servicing and feature attention. That phase has ended for Windows Server 2022. Microsoft says the product “will transition to extended support,” with security updates at no additional cost and monthly security updates continuing through October 14, 2031.

The one-day difference in Microsoft’s published dates is a presentation and time-zone issue, not two separate support events. The release-health wording uses October 13, while the lifecycle table presents October 14 in Pacific Time.

The lifecycle applies to Windows Server 2022 Standard, Datacenter, Datacenter: Azure Edition, and Essentials. Windows Server 2022 containers follow the same lifecycle dates, so container hosts and images should be included in support planning rather than treated as an exception.

Will Windows Server 2022 still receive security updates?
Yes. Extended support continues monthly security updates through October 14, 2031, at no additional cost under Microsoft’s stated lifecycle terms. Reaching the end of mainstream support does not immediately make an installation unsupported or stop security servicing.
Administrators should nevertheless confirm that monthly updates are enabled, successfully deployed, and accepted by their organization’s compliance policy. Extended support changes the servicing phase; it does not remove the need to test patches, monitor failures, or maintain recovery procedures.

Azure Edition hotpatching has a separate horizon
Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition has an extended hotpatch-support horizon through October 2027 for enrolled and eligible devices. Hotpatching allows monthly updates without a restart. This is a special case for the Azure Edition, not a blanket extension for every Windows Server 2022 installation.

Checks for hotpatch users
- Verify that each server is running the Datacenter: Azure Edition rather than another edition.
- Confirm device enrollment and eligibility for the hotpatch service.
- Keep a conventional maintenance and restart plan for updates or changes that still require rebooting.
- Track the October 2027 hotpatch horizon separately from the October 2031 extended-support date.
Should you migrate to Windows Server 2025 now?
Windows Server 2025 is Microsoft’s latest Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release and the natural successor to evaluate. The end of mainstream support for 2022 does not create an automatic requirement to migrate immediately: a compliant organization can remain on 2022 while receiving security updates through 2031. Migration timing should instead reflect application lifecycles, hardware refreshes, risk tolerance, and internal support policy.

| Consideration | Remain on Windows Server 2022 extended support | Plan a move to Windows Server 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Security-update horizon | Monthly security updates stated through October 14, 2031 | A newer LTSC platform with a later lifecycle; confirm the applicable Microsoft dates for your deployment |
| Features and innovation | Operate the existing feature set; mainstream-support phase has ended | Evaluate newer platform capabilities and management features during testing |
| Application and hardware compatibility | Existing production compatibility is known, but aging hardware and software may become constraints | Requires testing of applications, drivers, backup tools, monitoring, and management systems |
| Operational downtime | Avoids an immediate platform migration, while normal patch maintenance remains necessary | Downtime and cutover method depend on workload architecture; Microsoft’s lifecycle material does not quantify them |
| Licensing and Software Assurance | Review your current entitlement and support terms | Budget and verify licensing or Software Assurance requirements through approved Microsoft channels |
| Hotpatch availability | Special eligibility for Datacenter: Azure Edition continues through October 2027 | Confirm the hotpatch options and eligibility that apply to the specific 2025 edition and hosting model |
A practical planning sequence
- Inventory every 2022 asset. Record physical and virtual servers, cloud instances, edition, build, role, owner, dependencies, and all Windows Server 2022 container hosts and images.
- Validate current servicing. Check that monthly security updates are enabled, successfully installed, and monitored. Document exceptions and compensating controls.
- Check policy and compliance. Confirm that your security, audit, insurance, and customer requirements permit operation in extended support through the planned retirement date.
- Classify workloads. Separate systems that can remain on 2022 from those tied to hardware replacement, application upgrades, unsupported drivers, or a shorter internal risk window.
- Build a 2025 test plan. Test business applications, authentication, storage, networking, drivers, backup and restore, monitoring, automation, and management tooling before production changes.
- Choose a migration method. Depending on the workload, use a parallel build and cutover, an in-place approach where supported and tested, or a staged replacement. Define rollback criteria before the change window.
- Budget and schedule. Obtain licensing and migration-service estimates through approved Microsoft channels. The published lifecycle information does not establish a universal migration price or downtime figure.
Common mistakes after the cutoff
- Assuming end of mainstream support means security updates stop immediately.
- Applying the October 14 date without accounting for Microsoft’s Pacific-Time presentation of the lifecycle table.
- Leaving containers out of the inventory because they are not conventional server installations.
- Assuming every Windows Server 2022 edition can use Azure Edition hotpatching.
- Starting a 2025 migration without testing backup recovery, drivers, and line-of-business applications.
- Treating extended support as a substitute for a documented retirement or modernization plan.
The Bottom Line
Windows Server 2022 remains security-serviced in extended support through October 14, 2031, but mainstream support ended in October 2026. Keep patching and document your compliance position now, while evaluating and testing Windows Server 2025 as the successor LTSC platform. Datacenter: Azure Edition hotpatching is a narrower exception that runs through October 2027 for eligible enrolled devices.
