Use Windows Sandbox for a fast, disposable check of an installer, launcher, or first-run experience. Use a conventional Hyper-V virtual machine when the guest must keep its files and settings, be tested repeatedly, or be rolled back deliberately. Neither option is automatically the right tool for measuring frame rates or proving that a game will behave like it does on a physical gaming PC. Those tests depend on the graphics path, drivers, anti-cheat and platform services, and the exact environment you are trying to reproduce.
Microsoft’s documentation establishes how each environment behaves, but it does not provide game-specific compatibility results or a universal performance winner. Treat this as a choice of test environments, not a benchmark of the two products.

The short answer
| What you need to test | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Does an installer launch, and does a launcher reach its first screen? | Windows Sandbox | A fresh, isolated desktop can be discarded by closing it, so every attempt starts clean. |
| Can I repeat a test with retained saves, patches, settings or tools? | Hyper-V virtual machine | A full VM keeps its guest state until you change or revert it manually. |
| Do I need a carefully configured Windows installation for a test matrix? | Hyper-V virtual machine | You can maintain a guest OS, snapshots or checkpoints, and a known software baseline. |
| Do I need representative frame-rate or graphics-driver results? | Neither by default | First verify whether hardware acceleration is active and whether the virtualized graphics path represents the real player setup. |
| Am I opening an unfamiliar installer? | Sandbox with deliberate restrictions | Disable networking when it is unnecessary and avoid writable host-folder mappings. |
This distinction follows Microsoft’s descriptions of Windows Sandbox and its comparison in the Windows Sandbox FAQ. It is a workflow recommendation, not a claim that one environment runs every game better.
What Windows Sandbox actually is
Windows Sandbox is a lightweight, isolated Windows desktop intended for testing or demonstrating software. It uses a dynamically generated Windows image rather than a long-lived installation that you manage like a separate computer. When you close the Sandbox, its installed software, files and state are removed. That makes it useful for a one-time installer check, inspecting a launcher, or seeing what an application does on a clean system.

There is one important version qualification. Beginning with Windows 11 version 22H2, data survives restarts initiated from inside the Sandbox session. That does not make the instance permanent: closing the Sandbox still discards it. A restart can therefore help with an installer that reboots once, while a later launch starts a new instance.
Sandbox is not a second physical PC. It runs on the Hyper-V hypervisor and exposes a controlled set of virtual devices and integration features. Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox architecture documentation describes memory sharing, the dynamic base image and virtualized graphics. Those implementation details reduce setup work, but they also mean that the guest is not a neutral copy of every host component.
What a disposable session is good at
- Checking whether a game installer starts and completes its first stages.
- Observing a launcher’s initial sign-in or update behavior without changing the main Windows installation.
- Testing a mod manager, configuration utility or redistributable in a clean session.
- Repeating a “fresh machine” check simply by closing and reopening Sandbox.
What disposal does not guarantee
Closing Sandbox does not prove that the software was harmless to the host. Network access, clipboard redirection and any mapped host folder are integration paths that must be configured and reviewed. A disposable guest also cannot preserve a downloaded patch, a save file or a carefully tuned graphics configuration after it is closed.

A conventional Hyper-V VM is a persistent guest computer that you provision and maintain. You install a supported Windows edition in a virtual disk, assign virtual processors and memory, install the game and its prerequisites, and keep that state until you delete it or revert it yourself. Microsoft contrasts this persistence with Sandbox in the official FAQ.
Persistence is valuable when the test itself is a sequence. For example, you might need to install a game, apply a particular driver or runtime, reboot several times, record behavior, restore a checkpoint, and repeat with one variable changed. A VM can retain the baseline and provide separate checkpoints for those runs. The cost is administration: disk space, guest updates, activation and licensing considerations, resource allocation, backups and cleanup are now your responsibility.
Hyper-V host requirements
Microsoft’s Hyper-V requirements list Windows 10 or Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise, a 64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), VM Monitor Mode extensions, hardware-assisted virtualization enabled in BIOS or UEFI, hardware-enforced data-execution prevention, and enough memory for both host and guest. Microsoft gives “at least 4 GB of RAM” as a general planning baseline. That figure is not a recommendation for a gaming VM, nor does it describe the memory needed by the host, the game or background applications.

Check those requirements before designing a test. If firmware virtualization is disabled, Hyper-V may not start even though the processor supports it. If the host is already under memory pressure, allocating more memory to a guest can make both environments less reliable rather than improving the game test.

Graphics virtualization is the dividing line for game tests
A game launching successfully is not the same as a representative graphics result. Sandbox can use a virtual GPU (vGPU), but Microsoft specifies a compatible physical GPU and graphics drivers using Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 2.5 or newer for hardware-accelerated rendering. If the hardware or driver does not meet that condition, or if vGPU is disabled, Sandbox uses Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP), Microsoft’s CPU-based software renderer.
WARP can draw a desktop and some applications, but it is not the host GPU’s normal hardware path. A game may open under software rendering and still produce results that say little about play on the host. Microsoft’s architecture page notes that hardware-accelerated rendering is important for a smooth interface and graphics-intensive workloads; it does not publish frame-rate results for named games.
Hyper-V does not automatically mean direct GPU access
A standard VM does not automatically receive the host’s full graphics device. Hyper-V has a separate GPU-partitioning capability with its own hardware and configuration prerequisites. See Microsoft’s GPU partitioning documentation before treating a VM as a graphics test machine. The existence of that feature is not evidence that it is available, enabled or representative on your computer.
Questions to answer before recording performance
- Is the guest using hardware acceleration or WARP?
- Which virtual display and driver does the game see?
- Is the goal to compare virtualization options, or to predict play on a physical Windows installation?
- Does the game depend on a kernel-level anti-cheat, a platform service, a particular driver, or hardware features that a guest may not expose?
- Can you reproduce the same resolution, API, power mode and background load in every run?
Without those answers, a frame-rate number can be precise but misleading. The Microsoft material cited here does not establish game-specific compatibility or performance differences.
Choose by test objective, not by the word “game”
Installer and first-run checks: choose Sandbox
For a quick check, open a clean Sandbox session, transfer only the installer you intend to inspect, run it, and record whether it reaches the desired screen. Close the session when finished. The next session is clean again, which is useful for catching assumptions about pre-existing runtimes, user folders or registry entries.

If the installer requires an internet connection, leave networking enabled only for the duration and understand that the standard configuration exposes the application to the network. If it does not require the internet, disable networking in the configuration file before launching.
Regression and patch testing: choose a persistent VM
Use a VM when the test requires the same guest state across days or across many game versions. Install the OS and prerequisites once, document the configuration, and create a checkpoint before each significant change. A persistent guest lets you compare a patched build with the prior baseline without reinstalling everything.
Compatibility with a player’s real setup: start on physical Windows
If the question is whether a title works with a particular graphics driver, controller, anti-cheat service or peripheral, a virtual environment can introduce variables that do not exist on the player’s PC. A VM or Sandbox can still help isolate an installer or reproduce a clean software state, but it should not be presented as proof of real-world playability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUntrusted software: configure isolation first
Sandbox is attractive for suspicious installers because the guest is disposable, but its defaults are not an air gap. Microsoft’s configuration guidance documents controls for networking, vGPU, mapped folders and memory. Disable what the test does not need, and never map a writable host directory merely for convenience when the software may be harmful.
Configure Windows Sandbox for a controlled test
A .wsb file is a plain-text configuration that lets you set Sandbox options before the session starts. The exact controls and syntax are maintained in Microsoft’s configuration documentation. A minimal example that disables network access and vGPU is:
<Configuration> <Networking>Disable</Networking> <vGPU>Disable</vGPU> </Configuration>
With networking disabled, an installer that needs to download files will fail unless you provide those files through another approved route. With vGPU disabled, rendering uses WARP, so do not use that configuration for a graphics-performance experiment. The settings are deliberate trade-offs, not universal recommendations.

A practical Sandbox procedure
- Confirm that the host edition and Windows features support Windows Sandbox, then enable the feature through Windows’ optional-features interface if it is not already installed.
- Prepare a test directory on the host containing only the installer and non-sensitive support files you intend to provide.
- Create a
.wsbfile with the networking, vGPU, memory and mapped-folder settings required for this test. Use read-only mapping whenever a host file must be visible. - Open the
.wsbfile to start the isolated desktop and wait for the session to initialize. - Copy or access the installer through the approved mapping, perform the test, and record errors, prompts, reboots and graphics mode.
- Close Sandbox when finished. Treat all files and installed state inside that instance as gone.
On Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft notes that the older Sandbox app may attempt to download the latest version from the Microsoft Store. That is a version-specific operational behavior, not evidence of better game performance.
Build a repeatable Hyper-V game-test guest
Plan the baseline
Decide which Windows edition, updates, graphics components, runtime packages and game build belong in the baseline. Record the host CPU, physical memory, GPU driver, Windows version and power settings. Keep enough host memory and processor capacity for the host to remain responsive while the VM runs; Microsoft’s 4 GB figure is only a general Hyper-V baseline.
Create and protect the guest
- Enable hardware virtualization and DEP-related protections in firmware as required by the host documentation.
- Install Hyper-V on a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise host.
- Create a generation and virtual disk configuration appropriate for the guest OS, then install Windows and its updates.
- Allocate virtual processors and memory conservatively, leaving headroom for the host.
- Install the game, launcher and test tools. Record every version that can affect the result.
- Shut down the guest and create a checkpoint at the clean baseline. Use additional checkpoints for controlled changes, and delete obsolete checkpoints so storage does not grow unnoticed.
These steps produce a managed guest, not automatically a high-performance gaming system. If the experiment requires GPU partitioning, follow the separate Microsoft procedure and verify that the hardware and configuration support it.
Security and integration settings that change the result
Sandbox’s documented default setup enables networking and clipboard redirection. Networking can expose an untrusted application to the internal network. Clipboard sharing can make it easy to move text or files between host and guest, but it also creates a deliberate data path. Review both before testing unknown software.
Mapped folders are another boundary decision. A read-only map can supply an installer without allowing the guest to modify the host directory. A writable map gives software in the guest a route to alter host files. Avoid it unless the test genuinely requires write access and the folder contains no sensitive data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A VM gives you more control over virtual networking and device exposure, but more control means more settings to audit. Isolate the guest network when internet access is not part of the test, and keep test credentials separate from personal accounts.
Best Value
Common failure modes and what they mean
The game opens, but graphics are unusably slow
Check whether Sandbox is using WARP because the GPU or driver does not meet WDDM 2.5 requirements, or because vGPU was disabled in the .wsb file. A successful launch under WARP is not a hardware-accelerated result.
The VM has a desktop but no useful 3D acceleration
Do not assume that a visible desktop means the VM has direct GPU access. Review the Hyper-V GPU-partitioning prerequisites and configuration. If the test is meant to predict physical-PC gaming, move the performance run to the physical installation.
An installer cannot download its components
Networking may have been intentionally disabled in Sandbox or isolated in the VM. Decide whether network access is part of the test, enable only the required path, and treat the installer as untrusted while it is connected.
Changes disappeared after testing
That is expected when Sandbox was closed. Recreate the session or move the workflow to a persistent VM if the files and settings must survive. A restart inside Windows 11 22H2 or later can preserve data during that session, but closing it still disposes of the instance.
The Sandbox application behaves differently after a Windows update
Check the Windows release and the current Microsoft troubleshooting guidance. Microsoft documents that Sandbox supports only the Hyper-V hypervisor and records version-specific behavior, including the Windows 11 24H2 Store update path, in Sandbox troubleshooting documentation.
A decision checklist
- State: Do you need files and settings after closing the environment?
- Repeatability: Will you run the same guest configuration many times or across several days?
- Graphics: Have you verified hardware acceleration, WARP status and the driver path?
- Representativeness: Does the test need to match a physical player’s hardware and services?
- Resources: Can the host spare the memory, CPU time and storage required by a persistent VM?
- Exposure: Can networking, clipboard and mapped folders be disabled or restricted?
- Maintenance: Are you prepared to patch, back up and clean up a guest OS?
If the answers are “fresh state, short test and minimal setup,” begin with Sandbox. If they are “retained state, controlled rollback and repeated runs,” build a Hyper-V VM. If the key output is frame rate or driver behavior, verify the graphics path first and consider testing on physical Windows for the final result.
