Windows Quality Updates: How to Approve, Deploy, Pause, and Roll Back

A practical guide to approving and staging Windows quality updates, using deferrals and pauses, and responding when a release causes problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows quality updates can be deployed with standard Windows Update policies; a dedicated Intune quality update policy is optional. Use staged device groups or update rings to validate releases, then expand deployment. If a release causes problems, pause further rollout to contain it, and choose an appropriate recovery action for devices that already installed it.

What counts as a Windows quality update?

Quality updates are distinct from Windows feature updates, which deliver a new operating-system version. Quality updates are typically cumulative and released monthly: a later quality update includes the most recent quality fixes for that Windows version. Microsoft may also publish an optional non-security preview or an exceptional out-of-band update when an issue cannot wait for the normal monthly cycle. An optional preview should not be treated as an urgent security release simply because it is available outside the monthly security update.

That distinction matters for approval: the urgency and validation needed for a security fix may differ from those for an optional preview. Safeguard holds, discussed below, are a feature-update compatibility control rather than an approval mechanism for monthly quality updates.

Choose the management approach that fits your environment

For ordinary monthly delivery, Windows Update client policies configured through Group Policy or an MDM solution such as Intune can control deferrals, pauses, deadlines, restart behavior, and notifications. A separate Intune quality update policy is not required for monthly updates to continue. Intune quality update policies add cloud orchestration and targeting; Windows Update rings and client policies remain important for client-side deadlines and restart behavior.

Approach Approval and targeting When it fits
Windows Update client policies Configure deferral, pause, deadline, restart, and notification behavior through Group Policy or MDM. Group devices by deferral period to stage validation and wider deployment. Organizations that want policy-based staging without a dedicated quality update policy.
Intune quality update policy Adds cloud orchestration and targeted quality-update deployment. An expedite policy can accelerate a specific update for a limited device set. Managed Intune deployments that need targeted orchestration, policy-based reporting, Windows Autopatch workflows, or a supported expedite scenario.
Windows Autopatch quality update policy Allows automatic or manual approval by update type; automatic approval can include a deferral period. Organizations using Autopatch that want approval choices integrated into its update workflow.

These approaches are not interchangeable in every environment. Licensing, enrollment, Windows edition, device configuration, and administrative requirements affect which controls are available.

Set approval according to update type and risk

Microsoft recommends automatic approval for security updates in Autopatch and manual approval for optional or non-security updates. Manual approval can support change-control requirements or extensive testing, but delaying a critical security update increases exposure. Treat this as guidance to weigh against your own risk and change-control obligations, not a universal rule for every organization.

For supported Intune deployments, an expedite policy can accelerate a specific critical or security update when the normal schedule is too slow. Hotpatch is a separate scenario for eligible devices: Microsoft describes certain security updates as installable without an immediate restart. Confirm the Windows edition, configuration, and prerequisites before relying on hotpatch availability.

Stage deployment and decide when to expand

Use device groups or update rings to expose an update to a subset of devices before broadening deployment. Microsoft describes grouping devices with similar deferral periods as a quality-control measure. Choose group size and observation time based on device diversity, application criticality, and operational risk; Microsoft does not set a universal number of rings, test devices, or validation days.

  1. Define cohorts: Separate devices with materially different hardware, business roles, or application dependencies so that a problem affecting one cohort is easier to detect.
  2. Set the validation window: Microsoft’s client-policy guidance allows quality-update deferral of up to 30 days. Separately, its policy recommendations say administrators may consider a two-to-three-day quality-update deferral while evaluating an update with another ring. The shorter period is a recommendation, not a requirement or a substitute for risk-based validation.
  3. Monitor before expanding: Check update status and operational signals relevant to your environment, such as application failures, restart issues, and user reports. Expand when the evidence is acceptable for the next cohort; there is no fixed Microsoft observation period.
  4. Use pause sparingly: Client policies can pause an update for up to 35 days from a specified start date. Microsoft recommends leaving pause settings disabled unless a known issue makes a pause necessary.

Deferral and pause are scheduling controls, not rollback tools: they affect further offers or installation timing, not devices that have already completed installation.

What to do when a quality update causes problems

First establish whether the update is still rolling out or is already installed on affected devices. Containing future deployment and recovering devices already updated are separate decisions.

Pause to contain further deployment

Use a pause when you need time to investigate a suspected release problem and prevent additional devices from installing the update. The policy can hold deployment for up to 35 days from its specified start date. A pause does not remove the update from devices on which installation has completed.

Uninstall the latest quality update through an Intune update ring

In Intune, an administrator can choose Uninstall for the latest quality update on an active or paused update ring. Microsoft says the request is passed to devices immediately; removal begins when a device receives the policy. If removal requires a restart, the restart occurs without offering the user a delay. Consider this potential disruption before applying the action, especially to devices in active use.

Because quality updates are cumulative, uninstalling the latest one removes the most recent quality fixes for that Windows version along with the problematic change. Use this action when its recovery benefit outweighs losing those fixes, and coordinate the decision with the teams responsible for affected devices.

Use Known Issue Rollback when Microsoft provides one

A Known Issue Rollback (KIR) is narrower than uninstalling an entire quality update: it reverts a specific problematic change while retaining the release’s other changes. KIR is temporary; a later update that fixes the problem makes the rollback unnecessary. It is not a general-purpose control administrators can create for any regression. Apply the Microsoft-provided policy or metadata that matches the issue.

Handle hotpatch issues with the hotpatch-specific process

Hotpatch updates do not support automatic rollback, although Microsoft says they can be uninstalled. Its guidance for an unexpected issue is to uninstall the hotpatch update, install the latest standard cumulative update, and restart. This sequence applies to the hotpatch scenario and should not be treated as the general rollback procedure for every quality update.

How to interpret a safeguard hold

Microsoft uses quality and compatibility information to identify issues that may cause a feature update to fail or roll back. A safeguard hold prevents affected devices from being offered that operating-system version through Windows Update until Microsoft finds and verifies a fix. It is a compatibility signal for a feature update, not a pause control for monthly quality updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft advises against manually updating a device while the hold remains. Some managed scenarios allow administrators to opt out of safeguards, but doing so can expose devices to known performance issues; Microsoft recommends opting out only in IT environments for validation. For a live deployment decision, check current Windows release-health information and the applicable Intune documentation, since release status, supported versions, policy surfaces, and eligibility can change.
