Windows on Arm can run some PC games, but it is not a universal replacement for an x86 gaming PC. Windows 11’s Prism emulation and newer anti-cheat support have expanded the options, yet compatibility still depends on the exact game, device, drivers, and multiplayer software. If reliable access to a broad game library matters most, x86 is the safer choice; consider Arm when portability and efficiency matter and you have checked the games you actually play.
How Windows on Arm runs PC games
Windows 11 on Arm can run many x86 and x64 applications through Prism, a just-in-time translator that converts blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions and caches translated code. Microsoft says Prism is included with Windows 11 version 24H2. It is optimized for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, and some of its performance features require Snapdragon X hardware. A game or launcher rebuilt for Arm can run natively rather than through x86 or x64 translation.

Emulation broadens the software that can run; it does not guarantee that a game will install, launch, connect to multiplayer, or perform well. Games can depend on drivers and other components that are not compatible with Windows on Arm. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ specifically warns that games may fail if they rely on anti-cheat drivers not made for Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft also notes problems with games requiring OpenGL versions above 3.3.

What has improved—and what remains game-specific
Prism supports more x86 game instructions
In a December 9, 2025 gaming retrospective, Microsoft said Prism had added support for AVX and AVX2 extensions to the x86 instruction set. This can help with software that uses those instructions, but it does not by itself establish that every game using AVX or AVX2 will work on every Arm PC.
Some anti-cheat systems now support Arm
Microsoft’s December 2025 retrospective reported Windows on Arm support from Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, Denuvo, and XIGNCODE3. Qualcomm’s November 19, 2025 article described Snapdragon X driver updates and reported that Fortnite was available with Easy Anti-Cheat support. These are meaningful platform and vendor developments, not blanket approval for every game that uses a named anti-cheat system. A publisher may have game-specific requirements or configurations, so check the individual title—especially for competitive multiplayer—before buying a PC.

Catalog listings are useful, not guarantees
Microsoft said on August 25, 2026 that Works on Windows on Arm listed over 7,000 verified apps and games. That is the catalog’s total, not a count of games guaranteed to run on a particular model or at a particular quality setting. Check the specific game and look for details relevant to your device and intended use.

Microsoft’s official sources do not provide controlled, model-by-model head-to-head benchmarks that establish a general Arm-versus-x86 frame-rate winner. Compare the actual computers and games, rather than treating processor architecture as a performance score.

What Xbox PC app support means on Arm
Microsoft announced on January 21, 2026 that supported games in the Xbox PC app could be downloaded and played locally on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft reported that more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with these PCs at that time. This is a dated, catalog-wide figure—not a guarantee that a specific game will work on your device, that every Game Pass title is included, or that performance will meet your expectations.
Microsoft also identified Xbox Cloud Gaming as an option for titles that are not supported locally. Cloud play depends on the game being available to you, service availability in your region, a suitable network connection, and any subscription or other access requirements that apply. Check current Xbox availability for the title rather than assuming a cloud option will fill every local compatibility gap.

How to check games before choosing a PC
- Make a list of the games you actually play. Include competitive multiplayer games, titles that use kernel-level or other anti-cheat software, and any games you would consider essential.
- Check each title with its publisher and in Works on Windows on Arm. Look for current information on launch, multiplayer, anti-cheat, and known limitations. A general statement that an anti-cheat provider supports Arm is not enough to confirm that a particular game does.
- Verify the combination you plan to buy. Record the PC model, Windows version, graphics driver, and date of the compatibility information. A listing for an app does not necessarily confirm the experience on every device or after every game update.
- Set your performance target. Decide on the resolution, graphics quality, and acceptable frame rate. Find a reliable benchmark for the exact PC and game when available; do not infer performance from the processor architecture.
- Compare the full hardware configuration. Evaluate GPU capability, cooling, power limits, memory, display, and price along with portability. These characteristics help explain why two PCs with different architectures—or even two PCs with the same architecture—can deliver different gaming experiences.
- Check local and cloud access separately. Confirm that the Xbox PC app supports a local download if that is how you want to play. For cloud gaming, confirm title, region, network, and service access.
Which type of PC fits your gaming priorities?
Choose x86 when broad local compatibility is the priority
An x86 Windows PC is the more cautious choice if you depend on a wide PC library, want dependable access to competitive multiplayer titles, or do not want to verify every important game against an evolving compatibility picture. This is a compatibility-oriented recommendation, not a claim that every x86 computer can run every game: check the specific PC’s GPU and the games’ requirements.
Consider Arm when portability matters and your games check out
A Windows on Arm PC may make sense if efficiency and portability are important and your own games have been confirmed to work on the model you are considering. Treat gaming as a device-specific decision: a thin-and-light design may suit selective play, but platform compatibility alone does not tell you whether its graphics performance, cooling, or battery life will suit your expectations.
