Windows on Arm runs native Arm64 software directly and can run many existing x86 and x64 desktop apps through built-in emulation. The important qualification is that emulation covers user-mode application code, not drivers or every deep Windows integration. A program may open normally yet lose printing, VPN, plug-in, graphics or Explorer features if those components do not have Arm64 versions.
The short answer
If your essential software has an Arm64 build, that is the best choice for speed, responsiveness and battery life. If it only offers x86 or x64, Windows 11 on Arm can usually run it without a separate emulator. Windows 10 on Arm supports x86 emulation, while Windows 11 supports both x86 and x64 emulation, according to Microsoft’s Windows on Arm documentation.

Compatibility is therefore broad but not universal. The executable is only one part of a Windows application. Drivers, shell extensions, print components, anti-cheat modules, plug-ins and graphics paths may have to match the PC’s Arm64 architecture. Check the exact app version, Windows release, peripheral and required background components before treating a successful launch as a complete compatibility result.

How Windows on Arm runs different app architectures
Native Arm64 applications
An Arm64 application is compiled for the processor architecture used by the PC. Its instructions run directly on the CPU, so it avoids translation overhead and can use an Arm-optimized power profile. Native builds are the preferred option in Microsoft’s guidance when one is available.

x86 and x64 applications through emulation
Windows includes emulation as part of the operating system; users do not download a separate virtual machine or emulator. Windows translates blocks of x86 instructions, and on Windows 11 x64 instructions, into Arm64 instructions while the program runs. Translated blocks are cached so code that executes repeatedly does not need to be translated from scratch each time. Microsoft explains the mechanism in How emulation works on Arm.
Windows 11 version 24H2 introduced Prism, Microsoft’s newer emulation technology. Microsoft describes Prism as improving emulated-app performance and reducing CPU use compared with earlier emulation. Prism is available on supported Windows 11 Arm devices with 24H2; some hardware-specific performance features require processor capabilities found only on Snapdragon X series systems. Emulator availability and every Prism optimization are not the same promise, so verify the Windows build and hardware model.
Architecture support by Windows version
| Application type | Windows 10 on Arm | Windows 11 on Arm | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arm64 | Runs natively | Runs natively | Best route for performance, battery and full vendor support. |
| x86 (32-bit Intel/AMD) | Supported through emulation | Supported through emulation | Usually works for user-mode code, subject to drivers and integrations. |
| x64 (64-bit Intel/AMD) | Do not assume support | Supported through emulation | Windows 11 is the documented path for existing x64 desktop software. |
| Arm32 | Legacy category | Legacy category | Microsoft says 32-bit Arm applications are no longer supported in future Windows versions. |
The table describes operating-system architecture support, not a guarantee that every application feature works. An x64 application can still depend on an x64-only driver, plug-in or service that cannot be emulated.
What normally works—and what “works” should mean
Typical user-mode desktop software
Office-style applications, browsers, utilities and many conventional Win32 programs can run under x86 or x64 emulation because their main code executes in user mode. Updates, file access and ordinary windows often behave as they do on an Intel- or AMD-based PC. A native Arm64 edition remains preferable where the publisher supplies one.
Complete workflows, not just the main executable
Test the job you actually need to perform: open and save a file, print it, connect to a server, use the required plug-in, access a camera or scanner, and run any background service. An application that launches but cannot see its licensed plug-in or printer is not fully compatible for that workflow.
The boundaries emulation cannot cross
Drivers are the main dividing line
Emulation supports user-mode code only. It does not translate kernel-mode drivers. Microsoft’s documentation states: “Note that emulation only supports user mode code and doesn’t support drivers.” Kernel-mode drivers, user-mode print drivers and architecture-matched UMDF drivers must be built for Arm64 on an Arm64 PC. Microsoft’s FAQ is explicit that “kernel-mode drivers and user-mode print drivers MUST be built as native Arm64 binaries to work on Arm64 devices.”
This affects printers, scanners, VPN clients, endpoint-security tools, storage controllers, specialist USB devices, audio interfaces and any application whose feature depends on a low-level filter. An x86 or x64 setup program cannot turn an Intel/AMD driver into an Arm64 driver. Obtain an Arm64 driver or a vendor-supported alternative from the hardware or software maker.
Shell extensions and other in-process components
Some software injects a DLL into Windows processes rather than running as an isolated application. Explorer context-menu handlers, input method editors, assistive technologies and similar shell extensions must match the architecture of the process that loads them. The desktop program may open while its right-click menu, text-entry helper or accessibility module is missing. Microsoft lists these cases in Troubleshooting x86 desktop apps.

Graphics and OpenGL behavior
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says x86 applications using OpenGL versions later than 1.1, or requiring hardware-accelerated OpenGL, can encounter problems. If the application offers a DirectX rendering mode, Microsoft recommends trying it. The same guidance says x86 applications using DirectX 9 through DirectX 12 work on Arm. This is guidance rather than a blanket guarantee for every game, plug-in or graphics workload; test the specific rendering features you need.
Dynamic-code restrictions
The emulator generates Arm64 instructions at runtime. An x86 desktop application that blocks dynamic code generation or modification inside its process may therefore fail to run unless that mitigation is configured appropriately. Security software and enterprise policies that prohibit dynamic code can expose this limit even when the application itself is otherwise compatible.
Incorrect architecture assumptions
Some older programs infer the host architecture incorrectly when running under Windows’ compatibility layers. They may look for x64 components, inspect the wrong registry view or select an incompatible installer. Microsoft recommends that developers use architecture-aware APIs such as IsWow64Process2 instead of assuming that a process’s apparent architecture identifies the physical CPU.

Older 32-bit Arm applications are a separate category from modern Arm64 software and x86 emulation. Microsoft’s FAQ notes that C:Program Files (Arm) was used for Arm32 applications and says those applications are no longer supported in future Windows versions. Do not treat an old Arm32 package as evidence that an Arm64 build exists.
Is an emulated app slower?
There is no single slowdown percentage that applies to every application. Translation work, cache behavior, graphics API, memory access, background services and the processor all affect the result. Prism in Windows 11 24H2 is designed to improve performance and lower CPU consumption, but Microsoft does not promise that an emulated build will match a native Arm64 build in every workload.
Native Arm64 software generally offers the best responsiveness and battery optimization. Emulation’s value is breadth: it lets you keep using many existing x86 and x64 applications while publishers complete native ports. Compare the exact task, not just launch time. A light office utility may feel normal, while a sustained compile, video export, plug-in-heavy creative project or game can expose more overhead.
Compatibility checklist before buying or installing
- Record the exact software. Note the product edition, version, plug-ins, licensing service and any companion utilities. Compatibility can change between releases.
- Look for an Arm64 build. Check the publisher’s current download page and support statement. Choose native Arm64 when it is offered and supports your required features.
- Confirm the Windows version. Windows 11 on Arm documents x86 and x64 emulation; do not assume Windows 10 on Arm provides the same x64 support.
- List every hardware dependency. Identify printers, scanners, VPN adapters, security filters, docks, audio devices and specialist USB equipment. Find an Arm64 driver for each item.
- Check integrations. Verify Explorer extensions, accessibility tools, input methods, plug-ins, anti-cheat modules and background services, not only the main application.
- Test the complete workflow. Install on the exact PC and Windows build, connect peripherals, exercise graphics features and perform the task you rely on before moving production work.
Microsoft’s consumer guidance for Arm-based PCs likewise advises checking whether the hardware developer has published an Arm driver. See the Arm-based Surface devices FAQ for that support advice.

1. Separate an app failure from a component failure
Run the application without its peripheral, plug-in or background service if possible. If the main window opens but printing, VPN access, Explorer integration or a device is unavailable, investigate the missing component first; emulation cannot supply a driver.

2. Confirm architecture and build
Check whether the publisher offers Arm64, x86 or x64, then check the Windows edition and version in Settings. On Windows 11, an x64 package has a documented emulation path. On Windows 10, treat an x64-only package as unsupported until the vendor confirms otherwise.
3. Install the correct vendor components
Download an Arm64 driver or Arm-compatible plug-in from the device or software vendor. Do not rely on an x86 or x64 installer to install a kernel, print or UMDF component on Arm64 Windows.
4. Try the application’s emulation settings only when necessary
Windows provides per-app emulation controls described in Adjust Emulation Settings on Arm. Use them as targeted troubleshooting, record the original setting, and change one option at a time. Microsoft warns that a change can reduce performance, cause crashes or stop the program launching; it is not a general speed-optimization switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Check graphics mode and security policy
If the failure appears during rendering, select DirectX instead of a problematic OpenGL path when the application offers that choice. If the program is blocked before its window appears, ask whether enterprise security policy prevents dynamic code generation; the emulator relies on generating Arm64 instructions at runtime.
6. Retest after updates
Recheck the application, Windows build and driver after updates. Emulation behavior, native ports and hardware support evolve, so a vendor’s current support statement is more useful than an old forum report.
Choosing native Arm64 versus emulated x86 or x64
| Decision factor | Native Arm64 build | Emulated x86/x64 build |
|---|---|---|
| Execution | Runs directly on the Arm CPU. | Instruction blocks are translated and cached by Windows. |
| Performance and battery | Microsoft’s preferred option for best performance, responsiveness and optimized battery life. | Workload-dependent; Prism improves the experience but cannot guarantee native-equivalent results. |
| Existing software access | Requires the publisher to provide an Arm64 edition. | Preserves access to many established Windows applications. |
| Drivers and deep integrations | Can use Arm64 drivers and matching in-process components. | Still requires Arm64 drivers, shell components and other architecture-matched integrations. |
| Support risk | Usually the vendor’s forward-looking path. | Depends on emulation behavior and the application’s architecture assumptions. |
Choose emulation when it keeps a required application available and all of its peripherals and integrations are supported. Prefer native Arm64 when performance, battery endurance or long-term vendor support matters most.
What developers can do: Arm64EC
Organizations porting a large application do not always need to convert every module at once. Microsoft’s Arm64EC documentation describes a hybrid model in which Arm64EC code runs natively while x64 code in the same process runs through Windows 11’s built-in emulation. This can support staged porting, but it is a development architecture choice; it cannot repair an arbitrary third-party application or provide missing Arm64 drivers.

A Windows on Arm laptop is a strong fit when your essential applications are native Arm64 or ordinary user-mode x86/x64 programs and your peripherals have Arm64 drivers. Treat driver-dependent tools, shell extensions, OpenGL-heavy software, dynamic-code restrictions and x64-only Windows 10 requirements as investigation points. Verify the exact PC, Windows release, application version and complete workflow before replacing an existing system, because “the app opens” is only the first compatibility test.
