If Windows Media Player on Windows 11 suddenly stops playing music, first check whether the problem affects one file or every file. A single failure often points to that file’s encoding or condition; widespread failures may involve a missing codec, Windows edition, player library, or audio output. The right fix depends on which player you’re using and the exact error.
Start by narrowing down the problem
Note the file extension, whether other music files play, whether the problem file works in another app, and the exact error message. Microsoft says a missing or unsupported codec can prevent playback, but codec problems are not the only cause. A familiar extension is only a clue: the file’s actual encoding and whether it is intact also matter.

- Only one file fails: Try another known-good file of the same type and test the problem file in another app. If other files play, the problem may be limited to that file or its encoding.
- Files of one type fail: Check the codec used by those files rather than assuming the extension identifies it.
- All files fail in the player: Check your Windows version and edition, pending updates, and—if applicable—the Legacy player’s library.
- No sound in other apps either: Treat this as a Windows audio-output or driver problem, not just a Media Player file-support issue; follow Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting.
Microsoft’s current list of audio formats supported out of the box includes MP3, MP2, AAC, M4A, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, WMA, 3GP, 3G2, and AMR. That list does not guarantee that every file with one of those extensions will play: the encoding may differ, or the file may be damaged. See Microsoft’s supported file types.

Check your Windows edition and version
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Check the Windows edition and version shown on the About page.
- Use the details below only if they fit your system and the file involved.
If the edition is Windows 11 N
Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack for Windows 10/11 N restores media features, including Windows Media Player and audio codec support. This remedy is specific to N editions; it is not a general fix for every playback error.
If the version is Windows 11 24H2 and the file uses AC-3
Microsoft says the AC-3 codec is no longer included beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2. Some device manufacturers preinstall it, and systems upgraded from an earlier Windows version retain it. Investigate AC-3 only when the affected media actually uses that codec; it does not explain ordinary failures involving unrelated formats.

Address a missing or unsupported codec
If the error says “A codec is required to play this file,” or Windows Media Player can’t play a particular file, the file may use a codec that is not installed or supported. Check the actual codec rather than installing software based on the extension alone.

Where Microsoft lists a relevant option, use the supported Microsoft Store extension route. Microsoft names extensions for MPEG-2 Video, HEVC, VP9, AV1, and Web Media; the Web Media Extension adds OGG/Vorbis support. These are for the formats they cover—not a general fix for MP3 playback. Microsoft’s Codecs FAQ explains codec support and warns that some third-party codec packs can cause incompatibility or system corruption. Avoid broad codec packs unless you have identified a specific need and a trustworthy source.

Install pending Windows updates
If the file should be supported and the player still fails, check Windows Update for available updates and install them. Then retry the same file. This is a sensible general check, but it will not make an unsupported encoding compatible or repair a damaged file.

Do not delete Legacy database files as a first step. Clearing or rebuilding the player’s library can remove local library data and may require the library to be rebuilt. Confirm that you are troubleshooting Legacy, and use the library reset only when the player’s library is the issue—not simply because one music file will not play.
