Microsoft will stop supporting skins in Windows Media Player Legacy on November 10, 2026, for Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. Its notice is about skins—not the removal of the Legacy player itself—and Microsoft’s modern Media Player is not documented as compatible with Legacy skins.

What Microsoft is changing—and what it is not

Microsoft’s official notice says: “Skins will no longer be supported in Windows Media Player Legacy (WMPL) starting November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.” The announcement names Windows 11 24H2 and later; it does not announce that Windows Media Player Legacy will be removed on that date. Microsoft’s notice is specifically about skin support.

Windows Latest reports that the scope also includes Windows 11 26H2, but Microsoft’s direct wording is “version 24H2 and later.” Windows Latest’s October 1, 2026 report says Legacy remains on the PC; that is the outlet’s reporting, not a broader statement in Microsoft’s notice.

What Windows Media Player skins did

Skins were sets of scripts, artwork, media, and text files that changed the player’s presentation and could alter some of its behavior. Microsoft’s documentation explains: “Using skins, you can change not only the way Windows Media Player looks, but how it functions.” The possible behavior changes are limited by the underlying player technology. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player Skins documentation describes the feature and its limits.

What Microsoft’s modern Media Player offers

Microsoft introduced the modern Media Player for Windows 11 as an app for browsing and playing local music and videos, organizing a music library, and managing playlists. Its November 2021 announcement also described accessibility work and said the Legacy player would remain available in Windows Tools at that time. That historical availability statement is not a guarantee about current installation or availability on every Windows edition. Microsoft’s Windows Insider announcement describes the app’s capabilities.

Microsoft’s official material does not say that the modern app can import or use Windows Media Player Legacy skins. The Skin Guide calls the Windows Media Player SDK a legacy feature superseded by MediaPlayer and recommends MediaPlayer for new code where possible; that is developer guidance, not evidence of consumer-app skin compatibility. Microsoft’s Skin Guide does not establish that the modern app supports Legacy skins.

Legacy and modern Media Player: what the sources establish

Capability or scope Windows Media Player Legacy Modern Media Player
Skin customization Microsoft says skin support ends November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 24H2 and later. Microsoft’s cited material does not establish compatibility with Legacy skins.
Local music and video Not stated in the cited change notice. Microsoft describes local music and video library, browsing, and playback features.
Playlists Not stated in the cited change notice. Microsoft describes playlist management.
Availability The November 2021 statement that Legacy remained in Windows Tools was specific to that announcement; current availability across editions is not established here. The 2021 announcement concerned a Windows 11 rollout; current availability across editions is not established here.

What to do before the cutoff

  1. If you rely on a skin, check your Windows version. The announced date and scope apply to Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. Microsoft does not state in this notice what will happen to skins on earlier versions.
  2. Plan for the Legacy player without its skin support. The notice does not say the player itself is being removed, so do not treat the skin-support date as an announced shutdown of the whole app.
  3. Try the modern Media Player for its documented tasks. It provides local music and video library, playlist, and playback features, but do not assume your existing Legacy skin will transfer.
