Windows Longhorn Build 5048 was a developer preview, not a consumer-ready operating system. Compiled on April 1, 2005 and distributed to WinHEC attendees on April 24, it marked a visible reset in Microsoft’s Longhorn strategy. The build looked much closer to Windows XP than the dramatic earlier Longhorn concepts, yet it introduced the Aero visual style and groundwork for what would become Windows Vista.
What Windows Longhorn Build 5048 was
Build 5048 was Microsoft’s official Longhorn Developer Preview for WinHEC 2005. It was the only build from that period Microsoft made available through the event and was not officially distributed outside WinHEC, although copies later circulated on file-sharing networks. Its identifier was 6.0.5048.winmain_idx02.050401-0536.
Because this was an unfinished platform preview, missing, unstable or partially implemented features should not be read as final decisions about Windows Vista. Microsoft also indicated that the final user interface was still some way off. Windows Vista was not the product name yet; Microsoft adopted that name in July 2005.
What changed in Build 5048?
A visible retreat from the pre-reset Longhorn designs
Earlier Longhorn builds had encouraged expectations of a radically different desktop. Build 5048 was a surprise because its shell and general appearance were substantially more familiar. Windows XP continuity was obvious, and the ambitious visual concepts associated with earlier previews were not presented as a finished replacement.

That change explains the sharply mixed contemporary reaction. Paul Thurrott called it “a painful build to have to deal with after a year of waiting” and described it as a step backward in some respects. His assessment was commentary, not a Microsoft statement, but it captures why the build felt anticlimactic to observers following Longhorn’s earlier direction.
Aero appeared, but the composited desktop was not active
The retrospective development record identifies Build 5048 as the first Longhorn build to show the Aero visual style. However, the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) was present but disabled and hidden by default. Therefore, this build should not be described as running the later Vista-style glass and compositing effects as its normal desktop experience. Aero’s presence here is evidence of direction and underlying work, not a finished default interface.

The Start menu introduced a different program-browsing model
Build 5048 changed how the Start menu exposed applications. The All Programs view occupied the left side of the menu, and a typing field narrowed the program list as the user entered text. Some reviewers found the approach useful because it reduced scrolling; others criticized its interaction design. Those reactions are subjective and should not be treated as measured usability results.

- One reviewer reported that installation required NTFS and documented installing to a second drive alongside an existing Windows XP installation. In that configuration, drive letters were hidden by default and the running system volume appeared as C:.
- Another contemporary review said setup took well over an hour and reported a logon problem after an Administrator password was set and an additional account was created.
These observations are valuable for historical preservation, but they do not establish a standard installation time, a universal NTFS rule for every possible setup, or a guaranteed account-management failure. Build 5048 was not a supported daily-driver release.
What was planned for Longhorn in 2005?
WinHEC reporting in May 2005 separated Microsoft’s roadmap from the software people could actually use in Build 5048. InformationWeek, citing WinHEC sessions and an interview with Windows Product Manager Greg Sullivan, reported that WinFS would not ship with Longhorn. Avalon, Indigo and the WinFX APIs remained planned technologies at that point.

- Warns you of impending hardware failures early on, so you don't have to worry about the devastating loss of any important business data
- More securely connects you to your business information whether you're in or out of the office
Those names represented intended platform directions: Avalon for presentation, Indigo for communications and WinFX for the managed programming model. They should not be presented as completed, working user features delivered by Build 5048. Roadmap statements from April and May 2005 also changed as Longhorn development was reorganized.
How Build 5048 compares with other Longhorn milestones
| Comparison | What the record supports | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier pre-reset Longhorn builds | 5048 looked more XP-like and less visually radical, while introducing the first appearance of Aero. | Do not assume every earlier concept was simply removed permanently. |
| Build 5048 internally | Aero-related work existed, but DWM was disabled and hidden by default. | Do not describe it as a normal Vista-style composited desktop. |
| Windows Vista Beta 1, build 5112 | The first Vista-named beta arrived in July 2005 with major shell changes, including virtual folders, search and a revamped Explorer interface. | Do not attribute those Beta 1 shell features to Build 5048. |
Strengths and weaknesses as a historical preview
Why it matters
- It documents Microsoft’s post-reset direction at a crucial point in Longhorn development.
- It is the earliest build in the supplied development history associated with the Aero visual style.
- Its Start menu experiment shows Microsoft testing information retrieval and application launching before the later Vista shell matured.
- Its low-level components and version details make it useful to Windows historians and preservation projects.
Why it disappointed contemporary reviewers
- The desktop looked far less revolutionary than pre-reset Longhorn expectations suggested.
- The most visually important compositing component, DWM, was not enabled by default.
- Installation and account-management reports showed the instability expected from an unfinished preview.
- Many technologies discussed at WinHEC were plans rather than capabilities demonstrably delivered in this build.
Verdict
Windows Longhorn Build 5048 is best understood as a transition marker. It is historically important because Aero first appeared here and because the build reveals Microsoft’s reset toward a more achievable Windows Vista foundation. It is not a faithful preview of the final Vista interface, not a performance benchmark, and not a practical replacement for Windows XP. For enthusiasts, it is a valuable snapshot of development in April 2005; for ordinary use, its unfinished state and reported setup problems make it unsuitable.
