Enabling Windows long-path support removes the traditional 260-character restriction for many Win32 file operations, but only for applications that opt in. You must set the system policy LongPathsEnabled to 1, and the application must declare itself longPathAware. If either condition is missing—or if the program, shell, or file system uses a path-handling rule outside the supported model—the operation can still fail.
This is why changing one Windows setting does not make every installed program accept deeply nested folders. Microsoft’s Win32 documentation, updated July 16, 2024, describes the change as removal of MAX_PATH limitations from many common functions, not as an unlimited-length guarantee.

What Windows long-path support actually changes
The old 260-character rule
Traditional Win32 path handling used MAX_PATH, commonly described as 260 characters. Microsoft’s definition includes the terminating null character in its example, so the figure is not a promise that 260 visible characters are always available for names and separators.

A path could therefore fail even when the underlying storage format had room for the data. Deep project trees, generated build folders, package caches, backup directories, and synchronized workspaces are common ways to reach the old boundary.

The opt-in behavior introduced in Windows 10 version 1607
Beginning with Windows 10 version 1607, many commonly used Win32 file and directory functions can work without the legacy MAX_PATH restriction. The change is conditional: the system policy must be enabled and the application must identify itself as long-path-aware in its manifest.
Microsoft lists functions such as CreateFileW, CopyFileW, DeleteFileW, MoveFileW, and CreateDirectoryW among the operations covered by the newer behavior. This is an API-specific change, not a blanket rewrite of every Windows API, framework, command-line tool, or graphical shell.
What “long path” does not mean
Long-path support does not mean that any program can accept an arbitrary number of characters. The application still has to use a supported API path and handle the resulting strings correctly. Individual file systems also impose rules on the length and format of each path component. NTFS, CDFS, exFAT, UDFS, FAT, and FAT32 do not necessarily enforce identical component rules.

Microsoft states the limitation plainly: “This isn’t a change that will affect all applications.” Treat the feature as compatibility support for opted-in software, not as a universal switch.

The same policy can be delivered through Local Group Policy or Microsoft Intune. Those management routes set the operating-system policy; they do not modify an application’s executable or manifest.
2. The application opts in
The application manifest must declare the longPathAware setting as true in the Windows settings namespace. A typical manifest entry is:

</application>
The manifest must also declare the ws2 prefix for the namespace http://schemas.microsoft.com/SMI/2016/WindowsSettings. The exact placement depends on the application’s manifest structure, but the important point is that the developer—not the end user—must ship a manifest declaring long-path awareness.
How to enable the Windows setting
Registry Editor
- Sign in with an account that can make an elevated system change.
- Open Registry Editor by pressing Win + R, entering
regedit, and approving the elevation prompt. - Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem. - Find
LongPathsEnabled. If it does not exist, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with that name. - Open the value, select the hexadecimal or decimal base, and enter
1. - Close Registry Editor and restart Windows, or at minimum restart the applications that will access the long path.
Changing a value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE normally requires administrator rights. The registry edit changes Windows policy only; it cannot add long-path support to a program that lacks the manifest declaration.
PowerShell
From an elevated PowerShell window, you can create or set the documented value with:

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLocal Group Policy
- Open Local Group Policy Editor with
gpedit.mscon an edition of Windows that provides it. - Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem.
- Open Enable Win32 long paths.
- Set the policy to Enabled, apply it, and restart affected software.
Group Policy is preferable when administrators want a documented, centrally managed setting instead of editing individual machines.
Intune policy
Managed Windows deployments can apply the equivalent setting through the Intune policy CSP. This is useful when devices are enrolled and administrators need a repeatable configuration rather than a one-time local change. As with Registry Editor and Group Policy, Intune changes the system policy only; application compatibility remains a separate requirement.
Choosing a configuration route
| Route | Best fit | Administrative scope | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registry Editor | One local computer | Immediate, machine-wide change; elevation required | Sets LongPathsEnabled=1 |
| PowerShell | Scripts and repeatable setup | Local or remotely orchestrated, with elevation | Creates or updates the same registry value |
| Group Policy | Domain or centrally managed Windows environments | Policy-based, machine-wide deployment | Enables “Enable Win32 long paths” |
| Intune | Cloud-managed enrolled devices | Organization-wide managed deployment | Applies the corresponding policy through CSP |
No route in this table substitutes for an application manifest. Select the route based on how the computer is managed, not on an assumption that one method provides broader compatibility.
Why an application can still fail after you enable it
The program did not opt in
This is the most common explanation. Older software may continue using legacy path handling, and a newer program may simply have been built without the longPathAware declaration. Windows cannot infer the developer’s intent and cannot retrofit that declaration through a registry setting.

If the failure occurs in one particular application while other long-path-aware tools work, check for an updated version from that application’s developer. If no compatible version exists, the practical options are to shorten the directory tree, move the working folder closer to a drive root, or use a workflow that the program explicitly supports.
The operation is outside the supported API set
Opt-in behavior applies to documented Win32 functions whose legacy restrictions were lifted. A program can still fail if it routes the operation through an API, framework layer, plug-in, archive component, or scripting runtime that retains its own path limit. Do not assume that because one action—such as creating a file—works, every related action—such as copying, renaming, enumerating, or deleting—will behave identically.
The process was already running
Windows caches the LongPathsEnabled value per process after the first affected Win32 file or directory call. A program that was open before the policy changed may therefore continue using its previous state. Close and relaunch the application. Microsoft notes that a reboot might be needed so all applications recognize the new value; restarting Windows is the cleanest way to eliminate stale processes.
Shell behavior differs from API behavior
The Windows API can create or manipulate a path that the shell cannot interpret correctly. File Explorer and other shell components have their own parsing, display, navigation, and drag-and-drop behavior. Consequently, successful creation through a compatible API does not prove that the same path can be browsed, renamed, copied, or deleted through every graphical interface.
When a shell action fails, retry the operation with the application or command-line tool that created the path, then determine whether that tool supports long paths. Avoid treating a shell error as proof that the files are corrupt.

File-system component rules differ
A path is made of individual components separated by backslashes. The total path length is only one constraint; the file system can also limit a component or reject a name format. Microsoft identifies NTFS, CDFS, exFAT, UDFS, FAT, and FAT32 as file systems with differing rules. A path that succeeds on an NTFS volume may therefore behave differently on removable media formatted with another file system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical diagnosis sequence
Use this order to separate a policy problem from an application or storage problem:
- Confirm the policy. Check that
LongPathsEnabledexists under the documented key and contains the DWORD value1, or verify that the Group Policy setting is enabled. - Restart the process. Fully exit the affected program, including background or tray processes, and launch it again. Reboot if several programs were open during the change.
- Reproduce with a known compatible tool. Test the same operation using a current Windows component or script known to use the supported wide-character Win32 APIs. A successful test indicates that the system policy is being honored, not that every application is compatible.
- Identify the failing operation. Record whether the error occurs while creating, opening, copying, moving, deleting, enumerating, or displaying the path. Different code paths can use different APIs.
- Check the application build. Ask the vendor or inspect the application manifest to determine whether it declares
longPathAware. An application update may be required. - Check the volume. Determine whether the path is on NTFS, exFAT, FAT32, or another file system, and test a shorter individual component if the failure concerns one unusually long folder or file name.
- Separate API and shell tests. If an API-based tool succeeds but File Explorer fails, use the compatible tool for that operation or reorganize the files so the shell can handle them.
Guidance for developers
Declare awareness in the manifest
Applications targeting the newer behavior should include longPathAware set to true in the Windows settings namespace and ship that manifest with the application. Merely setting the registry policy on a customer’s computer is insufficient if the executable does not opt in.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use supported wide-character APIs
The documented examples use the “W” versions of common Win32 functions, such as CreateFileW. Review the complete call chain: a helper library, plug-in, archive reader, or framework may convert the path or impose a shorter limit before Windows receives it.
Test more than file creation
Long-path testing should cover opening, copying, moving, deleting, directory enumeration, error reporting, and application restarts. Include paths with long individual components and paths on the file systems your software supports. Also test how your user interface displays and edits the path, because shell and API behavior are not interchangeable.
What to do when you cannot change the application
- Move the project or data directory closer to the volume root.
- Reduce unnecessary nesting and shorten generated folder names.
- Use a supported command-line or automation tool for the operation instead of a shell workflow that cannot parse the path.
- Ask the software publisher for a build that declares long-path awareness and uses compatible APIs.
- For removable media or shared storage, use a file system and naming scheme appropriate to the workflow, while recognizing that each file system has its own component rules.
These are workarounds for an application compatibility gap; they do not alter the Windows policy or make the legacy program long-path-aware.
The bottom line
Windows long-path support is a two-part contract: set LongPathsEnabled to 1, and use an application whose manifest declares longPathAware and whose operation relies on supported APIs. Restart processes after changing the policy. If failures remain, investigate the specific API path, shell component, file-system rules, and application build rather than repeatedly editing the registry. The 260-character figure describes the legacy Win32 limit, not a universal maximum for every modern, opted-in workflow.
