There is no platform-wide winner. “Windows laptop” covers everything from sealed, soldered machines to highly modular designs, while MacBook repairability depends on the exact model and component. If your priority is adding RAM, replacing standard storage, or changing processor generations later, a documented modular Windows model such as Framework Laptop 13 offers more expansion than a typical MacBook configuration. If your priority is an official repair path, Apple and Microsoft both publish manuals and parts information for selected models. Check the exact model, generation, component, parts supply, tools, skill level, warranty and region before you buy or open the computer.

The short answer: compare the model, not the operating system

Windows and macOS do not determine whether a laptop can be opened or upgraded. The motherboard layout, attachment method, available replacement parts and manufacturer policy do. A Windows laptop may have socketed memory and a standard M.2 drive, or it may have soldered memory, a storage module that is difficult to access, and no practical upgrade route. A MacBook may have an official repair manual and genuine parts available for a supported job, yet still offer no user-replaceable RAM or storage in that configuration.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That leads to a more useful answer than “Windows is easier” or “MacBook is easier”:

  • For post-purchase expansion: some Windows laptops are much easier to upgrade, with Framework Laptop 13 providing a documented example of replaceable memory, standard M.2 storage and processor-generation changes through a mainboard replacement.
  • For documented repairs: Apple and Microsoft both provide model-specific service information for selected products. Documentation and parts access make a repair possible; they do not automatically make the job easy or make a component upgradeable.
  • For any particular repair: the exact model and part decide the answer. Battery, display, keyboard, storage, memory and system board can each have a different service path.

Use the procedure below to evaluate the laptop you actually own or intend to buy instead of relying on the Windows-versus-MacBook label.

Repairability and upgradeability are different

Repairability means restoring a failed part

Repairability concerns replacing a component that has stopped working or has been damaged. Typical jobs include installing a new battery, display, keyboard, trackpad, speaker, fan or system board. A repair manual, part number and tool list tell you whether the manufacturer supports that intervention and how it should be performed. The replacement may still be difficult, expensive or limited to an entire assembly rather than a small sub-part.

Upgradeability means adding capability after purchase

Upgradeability concerns changing a working component for one with greater capacity or performance. Examples include adding memory, fitting a larger SSD or moving to a newer processor generation. A manufacturer can support a battery or screen replacement while providing no way to increase RAM or storage. Conversely, a modular computer can make a storage upgrade straightforward even if a board-level repair requires considerably more skill.

Do not infer upgradeability from the existence of a service manual. Apple’s repair manual for the MacBook Air (13-inch, M4, 2025) demonstrates model-specific repair documentation; it does not establish that the machine’s memory or storage can be expanded. Confirm the configuration and the manual for the exact MacBook.

What Apple’s self-service program tells you about MacBook repairs

Use the manual for the exact MacBook and exact job

Apple’s Self Service Repair process starts with a model-specific repair manual. The manual identifies the supported procedure, required parts, tools and materials. For supported repairs, Apple directs customers to genuine replacement parts and professional-grade tools through its Self Service Repair Store. This is useful evidence that an official repair route exists for that model and task, but it is not a blanket promise that every MacBook or every component is covered.

Self-repair requires electronics experience

Apple says the program is intended for people with knowledge and experience repairing electronic devices. That warning matters because the work can involve delicate connectors, adhesive, calibration or a large assembly replacement. Read the entire manual before ordering parts, and decide whether the procedure is within your skill level. If the manual calls for a specialized tool or a post-repair configuration step, include it in the cost and time estimate.

Repair support does not answer the RAM question

Apple announced self-service support for M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks in August 2022, initially supplying manuals, genuine parts and tools through its store. That announcement is historical, not a complete current compatibility list. Apple’s current manual and parts lookup for the specific MacBook should control your decision.

In practical terms, ask two separate questions: “Can Apple document and supply the repair I need?” and “Can I change the capacity of the component after purchase?” The first may be yes while the second is not established. Treat memory and storage as fixed unless the exact configuration and service information explicitly show otherwise.

How Microsoft Surface fits into the Windows picture

Surface support is selective and device-specific

Microsoft says technically experienced users with the right tools can use a select range of replacement components and service guides for eligible Surface devices. Its guide center is organized by Surface model, and its parts information identifies which components are available. This establishes a supported repair path for selected devices, not a general specification for every Windows laptop.

Tools and experience are part of the requirement

Microsoft recommends self-repair only for people with technical experience, knowledge and the required tools. The tools are sold separately through iFixit. A repair that looks simple in a diagram can become risky if you lack the correct driver, opening tool, fixture or procedure for disconnecting a battery. Check the guide before disassembly and verify that the component is sold for your regional model.

Surface documentation is not proof of upgradeable RAM or storage

A service guide may describe how to replace a component without offering a higher-capacity option. Confirm whether the memory or storage is a replaceable module, whether a compatible larger part is supported and whether replacing it affects encryption, calibration or warranty conditions. The Windows label alone tells you none of these things.

Framework Laptop 13: a documented modular Windows example

Framework Laptop 13 shows why a model-level comparison is more informative than a platform-level claim. Framework describes the computer as a Windows 11 prebuilt option as well as a DIY configuration. Its product information specifies standard M.2 SSD storage and user-upgradeable memory. It also documents processor-generation upgrades by replacing the mainboard. Framework’s product page says, in its own manufacturer language, that the laptop is “simple to customize, upgrade, and repair, so it stays yours for longer.” That is a product claim, not an independent rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the documented upgrades actually mean

  • Memory: the memory is described as upgradeable, so an owner can replace the installed modules with compatible higher-capacity modules.
  • Storage: the laptop uses a standard M.2 SSD, allowing a compatible larger drive rather than requiring a proprietary board replacement.
  • Processor: the processor upgrade is a mainboard change. It is not a socketed CPU swap performed while leaving the original board in place.
  • Other parts: Framework says every part is replaceable with the included tool. Treat that as the manufacturer’s design claim and still follow the guide for your exact revision.

Mainboard replacement is a moderate, planned job

Framework’s mainboard replacement guide rates the task “Moderate” and estimates 15–30 minutes. That is the guide’s estimate, not a guarantee for every owner, configuration or first attempt. The procedure includes transferring the memory, storage and Wi-Fi modules to the replacement board. The estimate therefore illustrates a documented path for a processor-generation change, not a universal repair-time benchmark for Windows laptops or MacBooks.

Side-by-side comparison of the documented repair paths

Option What the official material establishes Upgrade evidence Experience and tools
Apple MacBook self-service Model-specific repair manuals list steps, parts, tools and materials for supported repairs; genuine parts and professional-grade tools are offered through Apple’s Self Service Repair Store. A repair manual does not establish replaceable or upgradeable RAM or storage. Verify the exact MacBook configuration. Apple says the program is intended for people with knowledge and experience repairing electronic devices.
Microsoft Surface Selected Surface devices have replacement components and service guides organized by model. Selected repair parts do not prove that memory or storage can be expanded. Check the exact guide and part. Microsoft recommends self-repair only for technically experienced users with the required tools; tools are sold separately through iFixit.
Framework Laptop 13 Framework publishes replacement and upgrade guides and describes a replaceable-part design. Upgradeable memory, standard M.2 SSD storage and processor-generation changes through a mainboard replacement are documented. The mainboard guide rates the job Moderate and estimates 15–30 minutes; the included tool is part of the product’s replaceable-part design claim.

A checklist for evaluating any exact laptop

Run these checks before purchase, before ordering a part and before removing a screw. Save the model identifier and guide for your records.

  1. Record the complete model and generation. Write down the product family, screen size, processor generation, year or revision and regional model code. “MacBook Air” and “Windows 11 laptop” are not precise enough identifiers.
  2. Name the component you care about. Decide whether the priority is a battery, display, keyboard, storage, memory, wireless module, processor or mainboard. A machine can be repairable in one category and closed in another.
  3. Find the manufacturer’s service guide. Confirm that the guide covers your exact model, not a similarly named generation. Read the parts list and the complete procedure before buying anything.
  4. Separate replacement from expansion. A guide that explains how to replace a failed SSD does not guarantee that a larger SSD is supported. Look for capacity, interface, dimensions and firmware compatibility information.
  5. Check how the part is attached. A standard removable module is a different proposition from a soldered component or a part bonded into a larger assembly. Do not assume that a physically similar module is user-serviceable.
  6. Confirm part availability and authenticity. Check whether the manufacturer sells the part in your region and whether a compatible alternative is specified. Apple directs supported MacBook owners to its parts store; Microsoft identifies selected parts and directs users to its service guides.
  7. List every required tool. Include drivers, opening picks, adhesive, fixtures, calibration equipment and any tool rental. Microsoft notes that tools are sold separately through iFixit; Apple identifies professional-grade tools for supported repairs.
  8. Rate your skill honestly. If the instructions involve battery isolation, delicate flex cables, adhesive removal or board transfer, follow the manufacturer’s experience warning. A short estimated time does not remove the risk of damage.
  9. Check warranty and timing. Apple frames self-service repairs as an out-of-warranty path, and Microsoft describes selected parts for out-of-warranty repairs. Confirm how the work affects your warranty, service options and data protection before proceeding.
  10. Price the complete job. Add the part, tools, shipping, possible replacement adhesives and the cost of a professional fallback. Compare that total with buying the desired configuration from the start.

Can you upgrade a MacBook?

You can repair selected MacBook components when Apple provides a manual and parts for that exact model and repair. That answer should not be stretched into a claim that the RAM or storage is user-upgradeable. The current MacBook Air (13-inch, M4, 2025) repair manual is evidence of a documented service workflow, not evidence of expandable memory or storage.

Before buying a MacBook for long-term expansion, identify the installed memory and storage configuration you need at purchase. Then verify Apple’s current manual and parts lookup for the exact model. If the document describes only replacement of a board-level or assembly-level component, treat that as a repair option rather than an upgrade path. If future capacity changes are central to your use, a model with explicit module-level upgrade documentation is the safer choice.

Can you upgrade RAM in a Windows laptop?

Sometimes. Windows laptops span many hardware designs, so the operating system cannot answer the question. A model may provide replaceable memory modules, soldered memory, or a mixed design in which only one slot is accessible. Microsoft’s Surface documentation covers selected replacement parts, but it does not make every Surface or every Windows laptop upgradeable.

Framework Laptop 13 is a clear documented example: Framework specifies upgradeable memory and publishes guides. Even there, select compatible modules, capacity limits and the exact board revision matter. For any other Windows laptop, consult the service manual and hardware specification for the full model code before ordering RAM. Do not buy a module based solely on processor family, screen size or the fact that the machine runs Windows.

Which repairs are easiest to compare?

Job Questions to answer before purchase or repair Why the answer varies
Battery Is the battery sold separately? Is it held by screws, adhesive or part of a larger assembly? Is post-repair calibration required? Manufacturers can document battery replacement while limiting parts or requiring specialized tools.
Display Is the panel replaceable alone, or only as a complete lid/display assembly? What connectors and adhesive steps are involved? Assembly-level replacement changes both cost and skill requirements.
Keyboard Can the keyboard be removed without replacing the top case or palm rest? Are regional layouts available? A supported keyboard repair may still require a much larger assembly.
Storage Is the drive a standard M.2 module? What interface, length and capacity limits apply? Is data migration documented? Framework documents standard M.2 storage; other laptops and MacBooks require model-specific verification.
Memory Are modules removable? How many slots exist? What type and capacity are supported? Windows designs differ widely, and a MacBook repair manual does not prove expandable RAM.
Mainboard or processor Is the processor upgrade a board swap? What modules must transfer, and what firmware or configuration steps follow? Framework documents processor-generation changes through mainboard replacement rather than a socketed CPU swap.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a brand category predicts serviceability

“Windows laptop” includes conventional notebooks, gaming systems, business models, Surface devices and modular products. “MacBook” includes multiple generations and chip families. Replace the category with the exact model code in every search and service decision.

Confusing a repair manual with an upgrade promise

A manual proves that Apple, Microsoft or another manufacturer has documented a procedure. It does not prove that a higher-capacity part exists, that the part is sold separately or that the replacement can be performed without changing a larger assembly.

Ignoring region, warranty and parts timing

Parts and service programs can depend on geography, model revision and warranty status. Apple presents self-service as an out-of-warranty route, while Microsoft describes selected out-of-warranty parts. Confirm local availability before disassembling a working laptop.

Treating a time estimate as a guarantee

Framework’s 15–30-minute estimate applies to its documented mainboard procedure. It is not a comparative statistic and does not include diagnosing a fault, backing up data, waiting for parts or recovering from a damaged connector. Use estimates to plan, not to measure your ability.

Ordering a generic part without checking interfaces

A physically similar SSD, memory module or battery may use a different interface, dimension, voltage or firmware. For a storage upgrade, confirm the exact M.2 length and interface. For memory, confirm the module type and supported capacity. For batteries and displays, use the model-specific part number.

Choosing between a MacBook and a Windows laptop

Choose a documented modular Windows model when expansion is the priority

If you expect to add memory, replace a standard SSD or change processor generations, start with a model whose manufacturer explicitly documents those actions. Framework Laptop 13 is the clearest example in the available documentation: it specifies upgradeable memory, standard M.2 storage and a mainboard route for processor upgrades. Budget for compatible parts and the skill needed to install them.

Choose a MacBook when the factory configuration meets your needs and official repair support matters

Apple’s model-specific manuals, genuine parts and tool program can provide a defined repair path for supported jobs. Buy the memory and storage capacity you expect to need, then verify that Apple supports the repairs relevant to your model. Do not pay for a configuration on the assumption that a later RAM or storage upgrade will be possible.

Choose a Surface or another Windows model only after checking its own guide

Microsoft’s selected-part program can be useful when your exact Surface model is covered and you have the required experience and tools. For other Windows laptops, apply the same model-level checklist: service guide, part availability, attachment method, compatibility, tools, warranty and local support.

Bottom line

For upgradeability, a documented modular Windows laptop can be substantially easier to expand than a MacBook. For repairability, Apple and Microsoft both support model-specific self-service on selected devices, while Framework documents a broader replaceable-part and upgrade path. The reliable buying rule is simple: name the exact model and the exact component you may need to change, then verify the manual, part, tool, skill, warranty and regional availability. The operating system is only the label; the service design is what you will actually live with.
