Windows 11 users are reporting Xbox-linked games failing to sign in with error 0x87DD0005 after installing the October 13, 2026 updates KB5127648 and KB5127694. Microsoft has not confirmed that either update caused the failures, and neither update’s published notes list this Xbox error as a known issue. The reports currently show a possible post-update connection, not a confirmed Windows defect or a universal outage.
What users are seeing
Reports published October 15, 2026 describe Microsoft Solitaire, Microsoft Mahjong, Gears of War 4 and other Xbox-linked Windows games rejecting account sign-in with 0x87DD0005 after the October updates were installed.

The failure is not necessarily affecting every Xbox surface. Some users could still sign in through a web browser or the Xbox app while an individual game refused authentication. Reports also say that resetting apps, clearing saved credentials, restarting the computer and reinstalling affected games did not resolve the problem for some people.

Windows Report attributed the reports to users and quoted the current evidence plainly: “Microsoft has not confirmed that KB5127648 caused the problem.” That distinction matters: the timing is consistent with an update-related failure, but it does not prove that either package is responsible.

Which updates are involved?

| KB5127694 | October 13, 2026 cumulative update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 on Windows 11 version 26H2. | Microsoft says it is not currently aware of any issues with this update. | Microsoft does not list the reported Xbox sign-in failure as an issue. |
An authentication change in KB5127648
KB5127648 changes the BlockNtlmv1SSO setting to Enforce when Credential Guard is disabled and the registry value has not been set. Microsoft warns that this can affect MS-CHAPv2-based authentication for Wi-Fi, Ethernet and VPN connections.
That documented change concerns network authentication. It does not establish a link to Xbox account sign-in, and the update notes do not identify 0x87DD0005 as a consequence.

Why the cause is still unconfirmed
Three facts currently sit side by side:
- The game failures appeared in user reports after the October 13 updates.
- The same error has been reported across more than one Xbox-linked game.
- Microsoft’s KB5127648 notes do not list the error, while the KB5127694 page says Microsoft is not currently aware of issues.
Those facts justify checking whether an update is installed, but they do not justify saying that Microsoft acknowledged an Xbox outage, that every Windows 11 device is affected, or that KB5127648 definitively broke sign-in. A service-side authentication incident, a game-specific problem or another account component could produce a similar symptom.
What to do if a Windows game shows 0x87DD0005
-
Confirm the update and build
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Look for KB5127648 and, on Windows 11 26H2 systems, KB5127694. Compare the installed Windows build with the builds covered by KB5127648: 26300.9711 for 26H2, 26200.9711 for 25H2 or 26100.9711 for 24H2. Record the game name, the error code and the installation date before changing anything.

Check Xbox service status
Open the official Xbox service-status page and look for an account or authentication incident. If Microsoft is reporting an outage, waiting for service restoration is safer than repeatedly resetting games or removing credentials.
-
Restart Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant
A user-reported workaround is to restart the Windows service that handles Microsoft account sign-in:

- Press Windows, type Services, and open the Services app.
- Find Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant in the list.
- Open its properties and set Startup type to Automatic.
- Select Apply, then choose Restart if the service is running. If it is stopped, choose Start.
- Close Services, reopen the Xbox app if necessary, and retry the affected game.
This procedure comes from a user report, not an official Microsoft fix. It may not work for every installation, and changing the service does not prove that either update caused the error.

Separate an account problem from a game problem
Try signing in through a browser and then through the Xbox app. If both work but one game still returns 0x87DD0005, treat the failure as game-specific until more information is available. Note the exact title and version and avoid assuming that reinstalling it will help; some reports say reinstalling did not resolve the issue.
-
Monitor for an official explanation
Check the KB5127648 and KB5127694 release pages and Xbox support announcements for a new known-issue entry, mitigation or hotfix. No permanent fix or estimated repair time has been established in the available reports.
What not to conclude yet
- Do not call this a confirmed Microsoft bug. Microsoft has not attributed the Xbox failures to KB5127648 or KB5127694.
- Do not assume all Xbox services are down. Browser and Xbox app sign-in may continue while a specific Windows game fails.
- Do not treat the service restart as guaranteed. It is anecdotal and has not been published as an official fix.
- Do not remove the updates solely because of one report without checking status first. KB5127648 is a security update, and its documented authentication change may matter to network access even though its connection to Xbox sign-in is unproven.
Current outlook
The most accurate description is a reported post-update Xbox sign-in incident affecting some Windows games. KB5127648 and KB5127694 were released on October 13, 2026, and the reported 0x87DD0005 failures appeared afterward, but Microsoft’s documentation has not confirmed a causal relationship. Checking service status, verifying the installed build and restarting Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant are the least invasive steps while users wait for an official acknowledgement or fix.
