For a child’s home Windows device, use Microsoft Family Safety with the child connected to your family group and using a standard account. For school-owned or school-managed devices, the school’s IT team should set policies through its device-management tools, such as Intune for Education. Neither approach guarantees a safe experience: settings have platform and browser limits, so pair them with clear expectations and regular conversations.
Set up Windows controls for a family device
Microsoft Family Safety is for family-group members and their connected devices; it is not the same system as a school-managed account or device. Organizers administer members and settings. Members can request more time or purchase approvals. Activity reporting is available when enabled and requires the member to have added a device. See Microsoft Family Safety and Family Safety roles and permissions.

- Connect the child’s device. Add the child to the Microsoft family group and connect the Windows device to the relevant Microsoft account. Microsoft’s device connection guidance explains the setup.
- Use a standard account for the child. Microsoft warns that family features may not work properly when a child uses an administrator account. Keep administrator access with the responsible adult.
- Choose the controls that match the need. Set device schedules, app and game limits, or content filters separately; they have different scopes.
- Review settings with the child. Explain the boundaries, how requests for more time work, and what activity reporting is enabled. Use reports as a prompt for conversation, not as proof that settings prevent harm.
Set screen-time schedules and app limits
Family Safety lets organizers schedule device use and set time limits for connected family-group devices. Schedules can vary by day and be adjusted as routines change. App and game limits are a separate control: they can set daily amounts and permitted time windows. Microsoft documents app and game limits across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices; availability depends on the connected device and account setup. See screen-time limits across devices and app and game limits.

Block or filter apps, games, and websites
Content filtering and time limits are distinct. Microsoft documents age-based app and game filters for Windows and Xbox, plus web and search filtering for supported browsers. That does not establish that filtering covers every browser, account, device, or online service. Check the browser and device configuration in use rather than assuming a filter applies everywhere. Details are in Microsoft’s filtering guidance.
- Apps and games: Use age limits to restrict eligible apps and games on the documented Windows and Xbox platforms.
- Web and search: Use web filtering with a supported browser, and verify that the child uses that browser for the filtering to apply.
- Time spent on websites: Do not rely on app and game limits to restrict website use; Microsoft says those limits do not apply to websites.
Microsoft describes Family Safety as helping families “create healthy habits and protect the ones you love.” That is the company’s product description, not evidence that the controls alone prevent online harm. Its screen-time page likewise calls limits “a great way to balance online habits within your family group”; it does not prescribe a universal number of hours. Use the settings to support family routines rather than treating a particular limit as scientifically established.

Use school management for school devices
Parents’ Family Safety groups are not a substitute for institutional device management. Microsoft describes Intune for Education as a cloud-based mobile device management service for schools, used to manage staff and student devices and help control access to school data. School administrators—not families—set the relevant policies. See the Intune for Education overview.

Microsoft’s common education configuration guidance covers Windows device restrictions, Windows Update, Microsoft Edge, and delivery optimization. Its recommendations reflect common school practice, are not mandatory, and can be tailored. They are not a complete safeguarding policy. Administrators and technical teachers can also use Set up School PCs to provision student devices, enroll them in Intune, schedule updates and maintenance, and restrict activity that is not beneficial to education. Schools still need local policy and IT oversight.

Check Windows support before relying on a device
Security and technical support are part of a safer-device plan. Microsoft says Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Such devices may still enroll in Intune for Education, but functionality is not guaranteed and may vary. See Intune for Education supported systems.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 SE overview states that support will end in October 2026. It says there will be no feature update after version 24H2 and recommends moving to a device that supports another Windows 11 edition to maintain updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. As of October 2026, that deadline is imminent; verify the current lifecycle information and the device’s eligibility directly with Microsoft before making a decision. See the Windows 11 SE overview.

Choose controls around the real setting
There is no single Windows setting that fits both family and classroom use. Match the approach to who owns and administers the device, which Windows edition and browser are in use, what scheduling and content filtering are needed, and what privacy expectations apply. For a school device, follow school policy and IT instructions instead of changing management settings independently.
