Windows Clipboard History is a short-term list of things you copy, opened with Windows logo key + V. On Windows 11 it can hold up to 25 copied entries, each up to 4 MB, and it can synchronize text between devices signed in to the same Microsoft or work account. Pinned entries survive a restart; ordinary entries do not. Cross-device synchronization is optional, and manual synchronization uploads the selected text to the cloud.
This guide explains how to enable and use the feature, why entries disappear, what the sync settings mean, how to clear local and cloud data, and what Microsoft does—and does not—document about privacy. Microsoft’s clipboard instructions also apply to Windows 10, although Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

What Clipboard History does
Windows normally keeps only the most recently copied item available for pasting. Clipboard History adds a flyout containing recent copies, so you can choose an earlier item instead of copying it again. Press Win+V in any app to open that flyout.
The first time you use the shortcut, Windows asks whether you want to turn the feature on. Select Turn on. You can also manage it through Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. Microsoft’s “Using the clipboard” documentation applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10, although the labels and layout can vary slightly by release: Microsoft’s clipboard instructions.

Clipboard History is a convenience feature for recent copies, not a filing system. It does not replace saving a document, storing a password in an approved manager, or keeping an important image in a file. Its small capacity and restart behavior are intentional parts of the design.
Windows Clipboard History limits
These are product limits, not usage estimates or independent test results.
| Limit or behavior | What Windows does |
|---|---|
| Number of entries | Up to 25 copied entries |
| Size per entry | Up to 4 MB |
| Supported formats listed by Microsoft | Text, HTML and bitmap |
| When capacity is reached | Older unpinned entries are removed to make room |
| After a PC restart | History is cleared, except for pinned entries |
The 25-entry limit applies to the history list, not to how many times you can use the ordinary Copy and Paste commands. You can continue copying normally; Windows simply keeps only the most recent qualifying entries in the history flyout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo keep an item available, open Win+V, open the item’s menu and choose Pin. Pinning is useful for frequently reused text, such as a standard response or a short template. It does not turn Clipboard History into permanent document storage, and pinned content should still be maintained in the original application or file.
How to turn on Clipboard History
Fast method from the keyboard
- Press Windows logo key + V.
- When the flyout says Clipboard History is not enabled, select Turn on.
- Copy a short piece of text and press Win+V again to confirm that it appears.
Enable it in Settings
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose System, then Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history.
If Win+V still shows no entries, copy a new item after enabling the setting. Clipboard History does not recreate copies made while the feature was disabled. Also check that you pressed the Windows logo key and V together rather than opening an app-specific clipboard panel.
Why clipboard items disappear
The 25-entry limit evicted an unpinned item
Once the list reaches 25 entries, copying another item removes older unpinned content. This is normal capacity management, not evidence that the feature is malfunctioning. Pin entries that must remain in the flyout, and remember that a pinned item still counts as clipboard content that may be visible to anyone who can use your signed-in Windows session.

The computer restarted
Windows clears unpinned history whenever the PC restarts. A pinned item is the exception. A shutdown, reboot after an update, or crash recovery can therefore leave the flyout looking empty except for pinned content. Restart clearing is separate from the 25-entry limit: an item can disappear because it is old, because the computer restarted, or because you deliberately deleted it.

Each entry is limited to 4 MB. Microsoft lists text, HTML and bitmap formats as supported; content in another format, or content over the size limit, may not be added to history. If a copy does not appear, try a smaller selection or plain text to isolate the cause. This is especially useful when copying a large formatted selection or an image rather than a short text snippet.
Sync Clipboard History between Windows devices
Cross-device history is separate from local history. To use it, enable the sync setting and sign in to the same Microsoft account or work account on each Windows device. Turning on local Clipboard History alone does not make copies appear on another computer.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history across your devices.
- Sign in with the same account on every device that should participate.
- Choose the sync mode offered by Windows: automatic text sync or manual text sync.
Automatic text sync
Automatic text sync is designed for convenience: copied text is configured to become available on your other signed-in devices without selecting each entry individually. Because this setting is intended for text, do not assume that every image or rich object in your local history will synchronize. If you switch between personal and work accounts, verify which account is active before troubleshooting; histories associated with different accounts do not join.
Manual text sync
Manual mode lets you decide item by item. Open Win+V, find the text entry, and select its sync control. Microsoft states that the selected text is then uploaded to the cloud and synced to your other devices. This gives you a deliberate checkpoint before a particular piece of text leaves the current PC, but it is still a cloud transfer once you select the control.
When synchronization does not work
- Verify that Clipboard History and the cross-device setting are both on.
- Check that every device uses the same Microsoft or work account; being signed in to different accounts prevents the histories from joining.
- Confirm whether you selected automatic or manual mode. In manual mode, an item is not sent until you use its sync control.
- On Windows 10, Microsoft’s instructions require the latest Windows 10 update for syncing between Windows 10 devices.
- Copy a fresh, small text item to test the setup. A missing oversized or unsupported item can look like a synchronization failure.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The feature may still exist on an eligible installation, but an unsupported operating system is a poor foundation for handling sensitive copied information.

What syncing means for privacy
The privacy boundary is easiest to understand by separating local history from cross-device sync. A local history can be used without enabling cross-device synchronization. When you use manual sync, Microsoft explicitly says the selected text is uploaded to the cloud and then synchronized to other devices. Automatic text sync is likewise a connected, cross-device feature rather than a purely local operation.
Microsoft identifies Cloud Clipboard as a connected experience. Its general Windows guidance says that data is sent to and processed by Microsoft when a connected experience is used: Essential services and connected experiences for Windows.
The reviewed Microsoft documentation does not specify clipboard-specific encryption methods, a service-side retention period, or every condition under which synced content remains available. Do not infer those details from the existence of the sync switch. If copied text contains passwords, payment information, private messages, health data or confidential work material, leave cross-device sync off unless your organization’s policy explicitly permits it. Delete entries you no longer want available, and avoid pinning sensitive text for convenience.
How to delete one item or clear all history
Delete a single entry
- Press Win+V.
- Locate the item.
- Open the item’s menu and select Delete.
Clear the flyout from the current PC
- Press Win+V.
- Select Clear all.
This removes the removable entries shown in the local flyout. Pinned entries are treated differently from ordinary history and can remain. If you need a pinned item removed, use that item’s own menu and choose Delete.
Clear clipboard data in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Under Clear clipboard data, select Clear.
Microsoft says this Settings action clears clipboard data on the device and in the cloud, except for pinned items. If you need an item gone from synchronized history, use this Settings control rather than relying only on a local deletion from the flyout. Check the flyout afterward, especially if you had pinned entries that require separate deletion.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Win+V opens but shows nothing: enable Clipboard History from the prompt or in Settings, then copy a new item.
- Older content vanished: check whether the list reached its capacity or the PC restarted; pin material that must survive either event.
- A copy never appears: check the 4 MB limit and the supported-format list before assuming Windows failed.
- Another device has no item: verify the account, sync toggle and selected sync mode. Manual mode requires selecting the item’s sync control.
- Only text syncs: automatic and manual options described by Microsoft are text-focused; do not treat them as a promise that local images or every rich object will transfer.
- The setting is unavailable on a work PC: an administrator may have applied the
AllowClipboardHistorydevice policy.
Administrator control on managed PCs
Microsoft documents an AllowClipboardHistory policy for supported Windows editions. An administrator can use it to prevent Clipboard History from being stored in memory. This is an organizational device policy, not a consumer-facing privacy switch: if it is disabled or enforced, changing your personal Clipboard settings may not be possible. Policy details are documented in Microsoft Learn’s Experience Policy CSP.

If a work computer refuses to enable history, do not try to bypass the policy. Ask the organization’s administrator whether clipboard storage and cross-device synchronization are allowed under its rules.
Choosing the right sync setting
| Setting | Convenience | Exposure consideration | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sync off | Copies stay managed locally | No cross-device clipboard transfer through this feature | Private or single-PC workflows |
| Automatic text sync | Least manual effort | Text is configured for availability on signed-in devices | Routine, non-sensitive text used across your own PCs |
| Manual text sync | Requires selecting each item | The selected text is uploaded to the cloud for synchronization | Occasional transfers when you want an explicit choice |
Use the least permissive option that still solves your workflow. Clipboard History is intentionally small and temporary: 25 entries, a 4 MB per-item ceiling and restart clearing make it a convenience feature, not a records system.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn on Clipboard History for the first time?
Press Win+V and select Turn on. You can also open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and enable Clipboard history, then copy a new item.
How many items can Windows Clipboard History keep?
The history is limited to 25 copied entries. Older unpinned entries are removed when new copies require space, and each item is limited to 4 MB.
Why did my clipboard items disappear after a reboot?
Windows clears Clipboard History whenever the PC restarts, except for items you pinned. Reaching the 25-entry limit can also evict older unpinned entries.

What account is required for cross-device clipboard sync?
Use the same Microsoft account or work account on each Windows device, enable Clipboard history across your devices, and choose automatic or manual text sync.
What does manual sync upload?
When you select an item’s sync control in Win+V, Microsoft says the selected text is uploaded to the cloud and synced to your other devices.
How do I clear clipboard data everywhere?
In Start > Settings > System > Clipboard, use Clear under Clear clipboard data. Microsoft says this clears clipboard data on the device and in the cloud, except pinned items.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can a work administrator disable Clipboard History?
Yes. Microsoft documents the AllowClipboardHistory policy for supported editions. It can prevent Clipboard History from being stored in memory, so a managed device may not let you change the setting.
The Bottom Line
Use Win+V for a convenient, temporary list of recent copies: 25 entries maximum, 4 MB per item, with pinned items surviving restarts. Keep cross-device sync off for sensitive text unless it is permitted, because Microsoft says synced text is uploaded to the cloud and processed as part of a connected experience. When you are finished, delete individual entries or use Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear to remove device and cloud data, remembering that pinned items need separate attention.
