Windows App vs. Web App: Which Should You Use?

Choose a native Windows app when you need deep Windows or hardware integration, native-code features, a required offline workflow, or an enterprise deployment path. Choose a web app when the service already does what you need and browser access across devices matters. If you want a separate desktop-style window without a conventional installer, check whether the service offers a Progressive Web App (PWA)—and distinguish that from a simple website shortcut.

What “Windows app” and “web app” mean

The labels describe different delivery models, not a guaranteed level of quality. A native Windows app is desktop software installed in Windows and built to use Windows APIs and local system resources. It may be written with technologies such as .NET, C++, or WinRT and can be distributed through an installer, an enterprise deployment system, or the Microsoft Store.

A web app is a service you open in a browser. Its interface and much of its code are delivered from a website, so you normally start it by visiting a URL. Browser permissions and standards determine what it can access.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Progressive Web App (PWA): A compatible browser recognizes that a web application is installable. In Microsoft Edge, an eligible PWA can receive a Start-menu entry, taskbar presence, an Alt+Tab entry, notifications, and startup behavior when the developer implements those capabilities. Microsoft Learn states, “On Windows, PWAs are just like other apps.” In context, that describes their Windows presentation and supported integration—not parity with every native API or hardware capability. See Microsoft’s PWA UX documentation.
  • Site installed as an app: Edge can place almost any website in a dedicated window, even when the site is not an installable PWA. This creates a convenient shortcut and window, but Microsoft says these site apps do not have the same capabilities as PWAs. The site’s code remains web code; the window does not make it native.

Therefore, a separate window or a Microsoft Store listing is not proof that software is native. Check the product’s actual implementation and feature list.

Quick decision: which model fits your job?

Choose a native Windows app when… Choose a web app or PWA when…
Your task needs deep Windows APIs, hardware access beyond browser APIs, or native .NET, C++, or WinRT functionality. The web service already meets your requirements and opening it in a browser is convenient.
The Windows edition has a specific feature that the web edition lacks. Confirm the feature with the vendor before committing. You need access from several devices or operating systems and the service supports the browsers you use.
Your organization requires a conventional desktop application, native policy controls, or an established enterprise deployment route. You want a desktop-style window and shortcuts without installing conventional native software; verify whether it is a PWA or only a site shortcut.
Your workflow depends on local hardware, drivers, system-wide integration, or capabilities the browser cannot expose. You prefer centralized updates and do not need a local installation on every computer.

This is a capability decision, not a speed or popularity contest. No general performance statistic establishes one model as universally faster; the service’s implementation and your workload decide the result.

When a native Windows app is the better choice

Deep operating-system and hardware access

Browsers deliberately restrict access to sensitive system functions. A native program can use Windows APIs and local components that are unavailable, limited, or impractical through standard Web APIs. Examples include specialized peripherals, device drivers, system-wide hooks, advanced file-system operations, and native media or graphics interfaces. Microsoft’s Windows distribution guidance identifies applications that require native .NET, C++, or WinRT functionality as poor fits for a PWA unless additional bridging is added. Read the guidance at Choose a distribution path for Windows apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer this requirement from an app’s name. Write down the exact device or Windows function your workflow needs, then verify that the product’s Windows edition supports it.

Features that exist only in the Windows edition

Some services deliberately make their desktop edition more capable than their browser edition. A local plug-in, device mode, batch operation, or system integration may be available only in the installed program. Treat that as a product-specific fact: compare the vendor’s current feature matrix or documentation rather than assuming every Windows app has an advantage.

Conventional deployment and administration

Organizations may need a signed installer, software inventory, device-management policies, controlled update rings, or an application that runs without an active browser session. A native package can fit those requirements more directly. The Microsoft distribution guidance distinguishes packaged native applications from web-based distribution paths; Store availability alone does not tell you which model you are getting.

Local workflows and predictable dependencies

A native app can keep its executable and supporting components on the computer, which may suit a controlled network or a workflow involving large local files. It can still require an internet connection for sign-in, licensing, synchronization, or cloud features, so “installed” does not automatically mean “fully offline.” Confirm the service’s documented connection requirements.

When a web app or PWA is the better choice

Access from multiple devices

A browser-based service can be opened on more than one Windows computer and, when supported, on macOS, Linux, phones, or tablets without installing a separate native build for each platform. The same account and server-side data can follow you between devices. Actual behavior varies by browser, operating system, and the service’s implementation; Microsoft recommends testing a PWA across the browsers, operating systems, and devices you intend to support.

Fast start and centralized updates

With a web app, the provider can update the service on its servers instead of asking you to download a new desktop installer. You can start with a URL and avoid filling local storage with a full application package. The trade-off is that a provider change can affect all users at once, and you have less control over the timing of those changes.

A desktop-like window without a native installer

An installable PWA can provide its own window, Start and taskbar entry, notifications, and other integration points when those features are implemented. It can be a good middle ground for a service that is primarily web-based but that you want to launch like a desktop program. A site installed as an app supplies the window and shortcut only; do not expect PWA-level integration from it.

Native app, PWA, and site app: the practical differences

Characteristic Native Windows app PWA Edge site installed as an app
Where the application logic runs Native Windows process and installed components. Web code running in a browser-controlled context. Website code running in an Edge app window.
Windows and hardware access Can use native APIs and hardware integrations permitted by Windows and the app’s design. Uses Web APIs plus any optional native bridge; deep native access is not automatic. Has the capabilities of the underlying website; the window itself adds no native APIs.
Start/taskbar/window integration Built into the desktop application model. Supported when Edge and the PWA implement it. Dedicated window and shortcut, but not the full PWA capability set.
Offline behavior Can be designed for offline use, although individual features may still require a network. Only works offline where the developer built caching, local storage, and offline logic. Only works offline if the website itself was built to do so.
Updates Usually delivered through an installer, Store, or management system. Web assets can update through the browser and service; behavior depends on implementation. Uses the site and Edge’s web runtime.
Runtime dependency Depends on its installed components and Windows support. Depends on a compatible browser and its supported features. Depends on Microsoft Edge; Microsoft says Edge-installed apps stop working if Edge is uninstalled.

Offline access: the most common mistaken assumption

Installing a web experience does not create offline support. A developer must explicitly provide it, commonly with service workers, cached assets, and local data storage. Even then, offline support may cover reading or drafting but not sign-in, synchronization, search over server data, payments, or collaboration.

Before choosing a web app or PWA, test the exact tasks you care about:

  1. Sign in while connected and open the files or records you need.
  2. Disconnect Wi-Fi and Ethernet, then restart the installed PWA or browser window.
  3. Try creating, editing, saving, exporting, and reopening the relevant content.
  4. Reconnect and verify that changes synchronize without duplicates or data loss.

Microsoft’s PWA best-practices documentation explains that offline operation must be implemented and tested; it is not a consequence of installation.

Installation and management in Microsoft Edge

The exact menu wording can change with Edge releases, and an option appears only when the site qualifies or when Edge can create a site app. Use these paths as the current workflow and confirm the result in the app’s details.

Install an eligible PWA

  1. Open the service in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Look at the right side of the address bar for the Install button or the app-install indicator.
  3. Select it, review the requested integration options, and confirm.
  4. Choose whether to create Start, taskbar, desktop, or startup entries when Edge offers those choices.
  5. Launch the new entry and test notifications, file handling, and offline tasks before relying on it.

Install a website as an app

  1. Open the website in Edge.
  2. Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
  3. Choose Apps, then Install this site as an app (the wording can vary slightly by release).
  4. Name the entry and confirm the installation.
  5. Use Edge’s app-management page to add or remove shortcuts and uninstall it.

Microsoft documents both installation paths in Install, manage, or uninstall apps in Microsoft Edge. A site-app installation is a launch convenience; it does not upgrade the website into a PWA or native program.

Understand the Edge dependency

Edge-installed PWAs and site apps use Edge’s engine, settings, extensions, and related browser features. Microsoft Support notes that uninstalling Edge stops these apps from working. If a managed computer may remove or replace Edge, choose a native edition or another supported browser deployment instead.

See Apps and widgets that depend on Microsoft Edge for Microsoft’s explanation of this dependency.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Portability versus consistency

Web delivery makes a service available on more kinds of hardware, but it does not guarantee identical behavior. Browser versions differ in support for notifications, file access, background execution, installation prompts, and other capabilities. A PWA can be built for several modern browsers and platforms, yet the developer still has to test each combination.

If your work moves between devices, list the platforms you actually use and verify all of them. A service that works well in Edge on Windows may expose fewer functions in a mobile browser or an older desktop browser. Portability is an advantage only when the required features travel with you.

Installation, maintenance, and distribution trade-offs

Question Native Windows app Web app or PWA
How do I get it? Installer, Store listing, or an organization’s deployment system. Open a URL; optionally install a PWA or create an Edge site app.
Who controls updates? The app publisher, Store, or administrator, depending on the distribution route. Mostly the web-service provider and browser; a PWA still receives web assets through its browser runtime.
What should I verify before installation? Publisher identity, Windows version, architecture and hardware requirements, permissions, and update policy. Publisher identity, browser support, required permissions, account requirements, offline scope, and whether the installation is a PWA or site shortcut.
Does Store presence prove it is native? No. A Store listing can distribute different application types. No. Microsoft’s documentation describes Store distribution for web-based PWAs as well as packaged native apps.

A Store listing can improve discoverability and provide a familiar installation route, but inspect the publisher and the product’s capabilities rather than treating the Store as a technical classification.

Windows version and support checks

Microsoft Support says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025 and recommends moving to Windows 11. On a current system, confirm your Windows version and then check the app publisher’s support policy. A program may continue to launch on an unsupported Windows release while no longer receiving fixes, or its current version may require Windows 11.

For Windows’ own recommendation and compatibility settings, Microsoft provides Change your app recommendation settings in Windows. Treat OS support dates, browser behavior, and Store policies as changeable; recheck the publisher’s current requirements when you deploy or replace a device.

A repeatable way to decide

  1. Define the non-negotiable task. Write down the device, file, notification, automation, collaboration, or offline operation that must work.
  2. Check the service’s feature matrix. Compare the native Windows and browser editions for that exact task; do not rely on the word “app.”
  3. Identify integration requirements. If you need native APIs, drivers, specialized hardware, or system-wide behavior, favor the native edition unless the provider documents a supported bridge.
  4. Test offline claims. Perform the disconnect-and-reconnect test on the specific records and actions you use.
  5. List every device and browser. Confirm that notifications, file access, extensions, and sign-in work on each one.
  6. Choose the lightest model that passes. Use a web app when it meets the requirements; install its PWA when a dedicated window helps; select a native app when the web model fails a required capability.
  7. Document the dependency. For an Edge PWA or site app, record that Edge must remain installed and supported.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“It has its own window, so it must be native.”

False. Edge can install an ordinary website as a site app. Check whether the service identifies itself as a PWA and which integrations it actually implements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Installing the PWA makes every feature available offline.”

False. Offline behavior is a separately implemented feature. Test each action and verify synchronization after reconnecting.

“A web app is automatically cross-platform.”

Not completely. The service may support several browsers but omit features on a particular operating system or browser version. Validate the combinations you need.

“A Microsoft Store listing means it uses native Windows APIs.”

False. Store distribution and application technology are separate questions. Inspect the publisher’s documentation and permissions.

“An installed Edge app will survive removing Edge.”

It will not. Edge-backed PWAs and site apps depend on Edge and stop working when Edge is uninstalled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for most users

Start with the service’s required capability, not its label. Pick the native Windows app when hardware, deep Windows integration, native code, enterprise deployment, or a Windows-only feature is essential. Pick the browser version when it already does the job and access across devices is more valuable than local integration. Install a PWA when you want a dedicated window and the service genuinely supports PWA integration; use a site-installed app only as a shortcut. In every case, verify offline behavior, browser and Windows support, and the provider’s current feature list before making the switch.
