Windows App Scrolling: WinUI, Electron, and Native Controls Compared

WinUI, Electron, and Windows native controls use different scrolling layers. Learn what their documentation establishes, where behavior depends on the app, and how to test the experience that matters.

There is no documented, universal scrolling winner among WinUI, Electron, and Windows native controls. They describe different layers: WinUI offers Windows scroll controls, Electron apps scroll web content rendered with Chromium, and “native controls” covers a broad set of Windows components rather than one standard implementation. The right choice depends on the content, input devices, system settings, and how much behavior the app needs to customize.

What is being compared?

  • WinUI: Windows UI controls, especially ScrollViewer and ScrollView.
  • Electron: A desktop app that hosts web content. Scrolling may involve the DOM, CSS, renderer code, Chromium, and Electron input APIs.
  • Windows native controls: A broad family of controls and system-level interaction guidance. There is no single native scrolling control whose behavior represents them all.

These distinctions matter because a framework’s documented capabilities do not, by themselves, predict how a particular app will feel. Microsoft and Electron documentation describe mechanisms and conventions, not a controlled comparison of smoothness, speed, or accessibility.

How does scrolling work in WinUI?

Choosing between ScrollViewer and ScrollView

WinUI 3 provides both ScrollViewer and ScrollView for content that extends beyond a viewport. Microsoft describes ScrollView as similar to ScrollViewer, but based on InteractionTracker, with animation-driven view changes and support designed for ItemsRepeater. Existing collection controls may already include a scrolling surface: Microsoft notes that ListView and GridView templates include a ScrollViewer, while ItemsView includes a ScrollView. See Microsoft’s scroll viewer controls guidance.

Visibility settings affect the two controls differently

For ScrollViewer, the horizontal and vertical scrollbar visibility properties affect both whether a bar appears and whether users can scroll in that direction. Disabled blocks user interaction in that direction, although programmatic scrolling remains possible. Hidden hides the bar while leaving touch, keyboard, or mouse-wheel scrolling available. In ScrollView, visibility settings control whether bars appear, not whether scrolling is allowed. Microsoft lists the defaults as Auto/Disabled for vertical/horizontal visibility on ScrollViewer and Auto/Auto on ScrollView. These differences make the selected control and its configuration important when a hidden scrollbar must not disable scrolling. See Microsoft’s control documentation.

Scrollbar presentation and layout

WinUI can display a touch-oriented panning indicator that changes to a traditional scrollbar thumb when hovered with a mouse or pen. A visible scrollbar overlays content by 16 px, so important controls placed near the edge need enough layout space to remain usable. Microsoft distinguishes scrolling with a wheel or scrollbar thumb, panning with touch or pen, and zooming as a change in the content’s optical scale. See scroll control behavior and layout details.

How does scrolling work in Electron?

Electron hosts web contents, so scrolling should be treated as a renderer and web-content interaction—not as a guarantee that every app uses one Windows native control. Electron’s MouseWheelInputEvent includes values such as deltaX, deltaY, wheel ticks, acceleration ratios, hasPreciseScrollingDeltas, and canScroll. Those fields expose input information; they do not establish the perceived behavior of a particular app. Renderer implementation and content still matter. See the Electron MouseWheelInputEvent reference.

Check Electron version and platform

Electron’s scrollBounce BrowserWindow option is documented as macOS-only, with a default of false. It should not be described as a Windows scrolling setting. See the BrowserWindow options reference.

Older touch-scroll event names also require care: Electron 23 removed the BrowserWindow events scroll-touch-begin, scroll-touch-end, and scroll-touch-edge. The breaking-changes documentation identifies WebContents’ input-event with gesture scroll event types as the replacement. Check the API documentation for the Electron version the app actually ships. See Electron’s breaking changes.

What Windows conventions should every app consider?

Wheel targeting and focus

Microsoft Win32 desktop UX guidance recommends sending wheel input to the most specific scrollable object under the pointer, without requiring a click or changing focus. It also recommends using Windows-configured vertical and horizontal scroll sizes. These are design recommendations, not a guarantee that every Windows control or third-party component behaves identically. See Microsoft’s mouse interaction guidance.

Respect user scroll settings

Windows mouse settings let users choose line-based or screen-based wheel movement, set the number of lines per movement, scroll inactive windows on hover, and choose scroll direction. Horizontal scrolling depends on a mouse that supports it. An app should respect these preferences where its chosen framework and controls support them. See Microsoft’s guidance for changing mouse settings.

Test input types separately

Microsoft’s input guidance treats mouse wheel, touchpad, touch, pen, keyboard, and gamepad as distinct input areas. Its panning guidance describes slow movement as one-to-one sliding and faster swipes as motion with animation physics. These distinctions are useful for designing tests, but do not establish that one framework has better motion quality. See Microsoft’s touch interactions developer guide and Microsoft’s panning guidelines.

Which approach fits your app?

Decision factor What to evaluate
Input coverage Check mouse wheel, precision touchpad, touch, pen, keyboard, and gamepad where relevant. WinUI documents broad input support; verify the actual Electron renderer and controls in use. See WinUI scroll controls, touchpad interactions, and touch interactions.
Scroll structure Identify whether the app has a long document, nested regions, a virtualized collection, or a two-dimensional canvas. For WinUI, consider whether ordinary ScrollViewer content or a ScrollView/ItemsRepeater scenario fits. See Microsoft’s scroll control guidance.
Scrollbar behavior Check visibility, discoverability, overlay space, and whether hiding a bar leaves scrolling enabled. The visibility settings differ between WinUI’s two controls. See Microsoft’s scroll control guidance.
System integration Test wheel granularity, direction, inactive-window scrolling, and focus behavior against Windows settings and interaction guidance. See mouse settings and Win32 mouse guidance.
Customization and maintenance Weigh built-in Windows controls against renderer-level web implementation. If handling Electron input events, align code with the version the app ships. See Electron’s wheel event reference and breaking changes.
Platform and OS targets Confirm that each behavior applies to the target platform and Windows versions; for example, Electron documents scrollBounce as macOS-only. See BrowserWindow options.

A sensible starting point is the framework’s standard scroll control for ordinary content, with custom handling added only for a specific interaction requirement. That is a practical design approach, not a universal framework verdict.

  1. Use both a notched mouse wheel and a precision touchpad. Check small deltas, acceleration, direction, and whether the expected region beneath the pointer moves.
  2. Test nested regions, such as a list inside a page. Confirm that the innermost expected region receives wheel input and that focus does not shift unexpectedly.
  3. Where supported, try touch and pen. Compare a slow drag with a quick swipe, including behavior at scroll boundaries.
  4. Use the app with a keyboard only. Confirm that content can receive focus and that arrow and page keys can reveal it.
  5. Inspect scrollbar visibility and hit targets, including overlay space and cases where a hidden bar must remain scrollable.
  6. Change Windows settings for lines or screens, line count, inactive-window scrolling, and direction; verify the app’s behavior.
  7. Repeat against the exact Windows App SDK or Electron version and the Windows versions the app supports.
