Windows App is Microsoft’s client for accessing Windows desktops and applications delivered by Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and supported remote PCs. It does not create a Cloud PC or assign access; an administrator must provision the service and resources. Compatibility depends on both the device you use and the destination service, so a connection that works on macOS may not be available in the Windows client or a browser.
This FAQ explains which platforms and services work together, when sign-in is required, what features vary by client, and the fastest way to diagnose missing resources or failed connections.

What Windows App is—and what it is not
Windows App is a remote-access client. After you sign in, it displays desktops, Cloud PCs, published applications, or other resources that an organization has assigned to your account. The service behind those resources remains responsible for the Windows environment, licensing, identity, and policy.

Installing Windows App alone does not provision a Windows 365 Cloud PC, Azure Virtual Desktop workspace, Dev Box, or Remote Desktop Services collection. If nothing appears after sign-in, the usual cause is that an administrator has not configured or assigned a resource. The app also does not reset or manage your password. Microsoft summarizes this behavior in its troubleshooting guidance: “Windows App uses your existing account, it doesn’t manage accounts.”

Which services can Windows App connect to?
The destination determines the features and client platforms available to you. Microsoft lists the following combinations in its current overview:
| Destination | Windows | macOS | iOS/iPadOS | Android/Chrome OS | Web browser | Meta Quest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azure Virtual Desktop | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported |
| Windows 365 Cloud PCs | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported |
| Microsoft Dev Box | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported |
| Remote Desktop Services | Not supported in Windows App for Windows | Supported | Supported | Supported | Not supported | Supported |
| Remote PC | Supported as a preview feature | Supported | Supported | Supported | Availability depends on the connection scenario | Separate Meta Quest limitations apply |
Windows App is also available on visionOS through compatibility mode. Meta Quest support is labeled preview, and Apple’s compatibility mode does not provide every feature of a native visionOS application. For a generally available Windows client to connect to a remote PC, Microsoft directs users to the traditional Remote Desktop Connection (MSTSC) client rather than relying on the Windows App preview implementation.
A desktop or laptop browser can use Windows App without downloading a client. Browser sessions are useful when software installation is blocked or when you need to determine whether a problem is specific to the installed application.

Do you need to sign in?
Managed cloud services
Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 Cloud PCs, Microsoft Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services require a work or school account supplied by your organization. A personal Microsoft account cannot be used to sign in to Windows App for these services. Your administrator must also assign the relevant workspace, Cloud PC, Dev Box, or published application to that account.
Supported remote PCs
Some supported remote PC connections can be used without signing in. This is a different authentication path from managed cloud services: the remote computer still has to be configured for remote access, and Windows credentials may be requested by the computer itself.

When sign-in succeeds but nothing is listed
If the app says, “It appears that your system administrator has not yet configured any resources for <username>,” the account is recognized but no resource has been configured for it. Contact the administrator responsible for the service. Reinstalling the client will not create an assignment.
What features does Windows App provide?
Windows App has a common set of remote-session capabilities, but the exact behavior depends on the client platform, destination service, operating-system policies, and whether a feature is generally available or still in preview.

Microsoft lists multi-monitor support, custom and dynamic display resolutions, and display scaling. A service administrator can restrict some of these options, and a browser or mobile client may expose fewer controls than a desktop client. Confirm the feature for your specific platform-and-service pair before planning a multi-monitor workflow.
Device and peripheral redirection
Sessions can support redirection of webcams, microphones and other audio, local storage, and printers. Redirection is controlled by both the client and organizational policy. A device appearing on the local computer does not guarantee that it will be available inside the remote session.
Audio, video, and Microsoft Teams
Windows App includes Microsoft Teams optimizations for supported remote environments. These optimizations are intended to improve audio and video handling, but they do not remove service or policy requirements. Camera and microphone behavior also varies by destination and operating-system version.

Multiple accounts, favorites, and search
You can switch among multiple accounts where the platform supports it. Favorites and search help locate frequently used desktops and applications in a large workspace. Taskbar pinning and interface localization are platform-specific rather than universal Windows App features.
RemoteApp integration
Individual RemoteApp programs published through Azure Virtual Desktop can be integrated with the local device so they behave more like local applications. The available integration depends on the client and the way the administrator published the program.
Important compatibility limitations
Microsoft’s known-issues guidance is platform-specific and changes over time. These examples are significant because they can look like account or network failures even when the client is working normally:
| Scenario | Documented limitation | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Windows App on Windows | Does not connect to Azure Germany or Azure Virtual Desktop (Classic). | Use a client and service combination Microsoft still supports for that environment. |
| Remote PC to Windows Server 2019 or later | Camera and microphone redirection are not supported. | The remote desktop may connect while those peripherals remain unavailable. |
| Browser sessions | Azure Virtual Desktop Private Link and AD FS single sign-on are not supported. | A browser fallback may require a different network route or an additional sign-in. |
| Azure Virtual Desktop in Azure Government | Browser connections are not supported according to the documented limitation. | Use a supported installed client; the documentation describes browser support as planned. |
| Windows 365 Government | Browser connections are supported. | Do not infer that the Azure Virtual Desktop Government limitation applies to Windows 365 Government. |
| Apple Vision Pro compatibility mode | Multi-window use is not supported. | Plan for a single application window. |
| macOS keyboard shortcut redirection | Currently works only with English or similar keyboard layouts. | Shortcuts on other layouts may stay local or produce unexpected results. |
| Android and Chrome OS | Sign-in has specific external-identity requirements. | Identity configuration, rather than the device, may be the blocker. |
| Office in a browser session | A dark-theme text-cursor visibility issue is documented. | Changing the Office or browser theme can make the cursor visible while Microsoft addresses the issue. |
| Clipboard on first use | A first-use clipboard behavior is documented among the narrower UI issues. | Test copy and paste in a new session before assuming clipboard redirection is permanently disabled. |
This list is not exhaustive. Microsoft maintains separate known-issue information for each platform, and a feature can be supported in one service while unsupported in another.
How to start using Windows App
- Choose the client. Install Windows App on a supported Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, or Chrome OS device, or open the browser version on a desktop or laptop. Meta Quest and visionOS use their documented preview or compatibility paths.
- Confirm the destination. Know whether your organization uses Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, or a remote PC. The destination determines whether Windows App can connect from your device.
- Sign in with the right identity. For managed services, use the work or school account provided by your administrator. Do not substitute a personal Microsoft account.
- Refresh the resource list. After authentication, allow the app to discover assigned desktops and applications. If the list is empty, verify assignment with the administrator rather than creating a new personal account.
- Open a resource and test essentials. Check display layout, audio, clipboard, local storage, printers, camera, and microphone before starting important work. Organizational policy may intentionally block one or more of these.
Windows App troubleshooting: a reliable order of operations
1. Check the network and update the client
Confirm that the device can reach the internet and that other sites or services load normally. Update Windows App to its latest available version for the platform. An outdated client can produce failures that look like service outages.

2. Try the browser client
Repeat the same sign-in and connection in a supported web browser. If the browser works, the installed client, its local cache, or a platform-specific feature is the likely difference. If both fail, investigate the account, assignment, service health, or network path instead.
3. Run the service-specific diagnostic
- Windows 365: Open the Cloud PC entry and choose Inspect connection. The check can identify problems and may fix some connection conditions.
- Microsoft Dev Box: Open the Dev Box controls and choose Troubleshoot & repair. Follow any remediation steps the service reports.
- Azure Virtual Desktop: Use the AVD Experience Estimator to check estimated round-trip time from your current location. High latency can explain slow input, audio delay, or poor visual responsiveness even when authentication succeeds.
4. Diagnose a missing Cloud PC or workspace
A missing resource is normally an assignment problem, not a download problem. Check that you signed in with the exact work or school account your organization expects. If the no-resources message remains, ask the administrator to confirm the Cloud PC, host pool, application group, or Dev Box assignment and its eligibility for your account.
5. Handle sign-in and password failures
Windows App uses the existing organization account and does not manage its password. Follow your administrator’s password-reset, multifactor-authentication, or identity-provider process. On Android and Chrome OS, also confirm that the organization’s external-identity requirements are met.
6. Escalate persistent failures
Give the administrator the client platform, destination service, approximate failure time, error text, whether the browser test worked, and the result of any service diagnostic. That information distinguishes a local client problem from an account assignment, policy, regional, or service issue. If performance remains poor after the network and latency checks, the administrator may need to review host capacity, routing, or organizational policy.

What happened to the older Remote Desktop clients?
Microsoft’s Windows client transition documentation lists several support milestones. The Microsoft Store Remote Desktop app reached end of support in September 2025 and is no longer available for download or installation. Support for the Windows Remote Desktop client MSI in the public cloud ended on March 27, 2026. Microsoft lists an extension through September 28, 2026 for Azure Government, Azure operated by 21Vianet, and Azure Virtual Desktop Classic.
| Milestone | Environment covered | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| September 2025 | Microsoft Store Remote Desktop app | Support ended; new installations are no longer available. |
| March 27, 2026 | Windows Remote Desktop MSI in the public cloud | Support ended according to Microsoft’s transition documentation. |
| September 28, 2026 | Azure Government, Azure operated by 21Vianet, and AVD Classic | Documented extended support date for those environments. |
These dates are policy milestones, not guarantees that every legacy installer will stop launching on the same day. Because Microsoft’s support policy can change, organizations should consult the current transition documentation for their cloud region and move supported Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 access to Windows App where appropriate.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right connection path
- Use Windows App on a desktop or mobile device when your platform and destination are both listed as supported and you need the broadest native controls.
- Use the browser client when installation is restricted or when you are isolating a client-specific fault, while accounting for browser limitations such as Private Link, AD FS single sign-on, and some government-cloud scenarios.
- Use Remote Desktop Connection (MSTSC) on Windows for a generally available Windows remote-PC client when the Windows App remote-PC feature is still preview or does not support your scenario.
- Ask the administrator before changing clients if the problem is a missing resource, identity error, or policy-controlled peripheral. A different app cannot grant access that has not been assigned.
