Microsoft says a Windows 11 memory-management update can keep up to 2GB more active data in RAM instead of moving it to slower storage on computers with 8GB of memory. On systems with 8GB or less, Widgets now load only when opened, which Microsoft says makes more than 200MB available for applications and other work.
Those are Microsoft’s reported effects, not independent benchmark results or guarantees for every device. The improvements are beginning to roll out broadly after testing with Windows Insiders, but Microsoft has not published one universal build number or a complete device-by-device rollout schedule.

What the Windows 11 change does
Windows constantly balances active information between physical RAM and the storage drive. When RAM pressure rises, less-used data can be moved to storage (paging), which is much slower than accessing RAM and can make app switching, multitasking and browser-heavy work feel sluggish.
Microsoft’s updated memory management is intended to keep more active data in RAM. For a Windows 11 PC with 8GB of memory, Microsoft says the system can retain up to 2GB more active data before moving it to slower storage. The company describes this as part of a broader effort to reduce Windows’ memory footprint.

| Microsoft-reported change | Qualifying systems | What is stated |
|---|---|---|
| More active data retained in RAM | PCs with 8GB of RAM | Up to 2GB more, depending on workload and hardware |
| On-demand Widgets loading | PCs with 8GB of memory or less | More than 200MB made available for apps and other work |
| Rollout | Windows 11 devices receiving the update | Beginning to roll out broadly after Insider testing; one universal build number is not specified |
Navjot Virk of Microsoft’s Windows team described the goal on October 15, 2026: Windows can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory rather than moving it to slower storage, helping the PC remain responsive as more applications or browser tabs are opened.
Who should notice the biggest difference?
The clearest target is a Windows 11 laptop or desktop with 8GB of RAM that slows down when several applications, documents or browser tabs are open. Systems with 8GB or less also receive the on-demand Widgets behavior. Instead of keeping Widgets’ supporting processes loaded continuously, Windows loads them when you open the Widgets panel.
Your actual result depends on the workload, storage speed, processor, drivers and other hardware. A lightly used PC may show little measurable change, while a machine that frequently pages to storage could feel more responsive. Microsoft has not published an independent benchmark or promised the same gain on every model.

How to get and check the update
- Open Settings → Windows Update and install all available Windows 11 updates.
- Restart the computer after installation, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Use the Processes tab to identify applications consuming the most memory, then use Performance → Memory to watch total usage while repeating your normal workload.
- Compare responsiveness and memory pressure before and after opening the same group of applications. Treat any improvement as device-specific; the announced 2GB and 200MB figures are not a guaranteed allocation shown in Task Manager.
Because Microsoft has not provided a single universal build number, two otherwise similar PCs may receive the behavior at different times. If Windows Update reports that the system is current but Widgets still behave as before, the change may not yet have reached that device.
Widgets: what changes and what you give up
On qualifying PCs, Widgets are loaded when opened rather than kept active all the time. That can release more than 200MB for other work, according to Microsoft. The trade-off is that information in Widgets is not maintained in the background when you are not using the panel, so it may be less immediate when opened.
If you do not use Widgets, simply leaving the panel closed avoids loading them. This is less disruptive than removing the feature and preserves instant access if you later decide to open it.

Additional ways to reduce memory pressure
Disable unnecessary startup programs
In Task Manager → Startup apps, right-click an application you do not need at sign-in and select Disable. Keep security software, touchpad utilities and hardware controls enabled unless you understand their function. Disabling a startup entry prevents automatic launch; it does not uninstall the program.
Stop apps from running in the background
For apps that do not need background activity, go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps, open the app’s menu, choose Advanced options, set Background app permissions to Never, and then test the app. Notifications, synchronization or update checks may stop until you launch the app again.
Find the real memory users
Sort the Task Manager Processes list by the Memory column while the slowdown occurs. A single browser tab, plug-in, game, virtual machine or creative application can consume more RAM than Windows background services. Close or reconfigure the specific offender before disabling broad system features.

Do you need more RAM?
Windows 11’s minimum memory requirement remains 4GB, according to Microsoft’s current System Requirements guidance. That minimum is enough to meet the requirement, not a promise of comfortable multitasking. If an 8GB computer remains constrained after updates and workload cleanup, additional physical memory is the durable option when the hardware supports it.
For a laptop, check the manufacturer’s specifications for a compatible 8GB SODIMM module before buying anything. Compatibility varies by laptop generation, available slot, memory speed, firmware support and maximum capacity. Some systems have soldered RAM or no free slot, making an upgrade impossible. Microsoft advises checking the manufacturer or a retailer for the correct memory.

Quick Recap
| Option | Benefit | Limit or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Windows memory-management update | Free software change; may reduce paging on 8GB systems | Effect varies and the announced figures are not guaranteed |
| Disable startup/background activity | Immediate, reversible reduction in unnecessary work | Can remove automatic notifications, syncing or updates |
| Add compatible RAM | Increases physical capacity and can reduce paging more substantially | Requires compatible hardware; some laptops cannot be upgraded |
| Faster storage | Can make unavoidable paging less painful | Does not provide the same benefit as additional RAM and is not guaranteed to reproduce Microsoft’s figures |
What the announcement does not establish
- It does not guarantee that every 8GB PC will free exactly 2GB, or that every qualifying device will release exactly 200MB for applications.
- It does not provide an independent test procedure, benchmark results or a complete compatibility list.
- It does not say that PCs below 4GB meet Windows 11’s requirements; Microsoft’s stated minimum is 4GB.
- It does not make a RAM upgrade unnecessary when the machine is regularly limited by physical memory.
