For most people, upgrading to Windows 11 is the safer long-term choice—but only after checking that the current PC, applications and peripherals are ready. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The computer still runs, but covered editions no longer receive normal security fixes, feature updates or technical assistance. Windows 11 eligibility depends on specific hardware requirements, and a clean installation can erase files and applications.

Use this order: check eligibility, confirm essential software and hardware compatibility, make a backup, then choose an in-place upgrade, a temporary alternative if available, or a replacement PC.

What changed when Windows 10 support ended?

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. For covered editions, that means no further normal operating-system security updates, quality fixes, feature updates or technical assistance. Windows 10 does not stop booting on that date; existing programs and files can continue to work. The important distinction is that continued operation is not continued supported security. As unpatched vulnerabilities accumulate, the risk of using the system for everyday online activity increases.

The consumer Extended Security Updates bridge

Microsoft described a consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for eligible personal devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in most markets where Windows is available. Organization-managed computers and devices covered by enterprise licensing were excluded from that consumer offer. Listed enrollment methods were syncing PC settings at no additional cost, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one-time USD $30 plus applicable tax. Regional choices could differ.

#1 Best Overall

  • Instantly productive. Simpler, more intuitive UI and effortless navigation. New features like snap layouts help you manage multiple tasks with ease.
  • Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
  • Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
  • Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.

Enrolled devices received only critical and important security updates, not normal feature updates or full support. Microsoft set the final stated consumer coverage date at October 13, 2026, regardless of when a person enrolled. Because that date has passed as of October 16, 2026, ESU should not be treated as an available extension without checking Microsoft’s current regional page. Enrolling late never moved the end date.

Microsoft 365 is a separate lifecycle

Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps continue to function on Windows 10 and receive security updates there through October 10, 2028. That statement applies to the applications, not the Windows 10 operating system. It does not restore Windows security fixes, feature updates or technical support, and Microsoft still recommends moving to a supported Windows release to avoid possible reliability and performance issues over time.

Windows 11 versus Windows 10 at a glance

Question Windows 10 Windows 11
Normal operating-system support Ended October 14, 2025 Supported release, subject to Microsoft’s current lifecycle
Security position No normal security or quality fixes; consumer ESU had a fixed end date of October 13, 2026 Receives updates when installed on supported hardware
Hardware gate Already installed on the current PC Requires a compatible 64-bit processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability and other minimums
Upgrade cost No cost to keep running, but unsupported use carries increasing risk The upgrade can be available without a new PC on an eligible device; an ineligible device may require replacement
Transition effort No migration if you stay, but you still need a security and replacement plan Requires compatibility checks, backup and post-install testing

This is not a universal speed contest. Microsoft’s published requirements and lifecycle guidance do not establish that Windows 11 is faster on every computer. A recent solid-state drive, processor, available memory, drivers and the applications you run can matter more to perceived responsiveness than the Windows version alone. Compare the support status and transition risk for your machine rather than relying on a blanket “best operating system” claim.

Can your PC run Windows 11?

Windows 11 eligibility is determined by a combination of processor, firmware, security, graphics, storage and display requirements. Meeting the minimum specification makes the device eligible in principle; it does not guarantee that every application, printer, accessory or workload will perform well.

Minimum requirements

Component Windows 11 minimum
Processor Compatible 64-bit processor, at least 1 GHz, with two or more cores
Memory 4 GB RAM
Storage 64 GB or larger storage device
Firmware and security UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and TPM version 2.0
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver
Display More than 9 inches diagonally, HD resolution and 8 bits per color channel
Upgrade starting point Windows 10 version 2004 or later for the Windows Update upgrade route
Initial setup for personal Home and Pro editions Internet connectivity and a Microsoft account

The 4 GB memory and 64 GB storage figures are floors, not recommendations for a comfortable workload. A computer that barely clears them may still feel constrained by large applications, many browser tabs or specialized software. Check the actual model, available storage and driver support rather than treating the numbers as a performance promise.

Check the actual device instead of guessing

  1. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app in the current Windows installation. Microsoft recommends this app to verify whether the device meets all Windows 11 requirements.
  2. Alternatively, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10 and select the option to check for updates.
  3. Record the result and any named reason for ineligibility, such as an unsupported processor, disabled TPM or insufficient storage.
  4. Check the Windows Update offer again later if the computer passes. Microsoft rolls out upgrades by device, so a qualifying PC may not receive the offer on the same day as another qualifying PC.

A work-managed computer should be evaluated with the organization’s IT administrator. Corporate policies, application testing and licensing can change the correct path, so treat a managed device differently from a personal PC.

Do not assume a disabled setting means the hardware is too old

Secure Boot capability or TPM can sometimes be enabled or remediated in firmware. Microsoft directs users to the computer manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. Do not change firmware settings by trial and error: an incorrect change can affect booting or encryption. If PC Health Check identifies a firmware setting, obtain the exact procedure for that model before changing it.

Which path fits your situation?

Situation Practical path Main trade-off
PC passes PC Health Check and essential software is supported Upgrade through the Windows Update offer after backing up Requires preparation and a transition period
PC is eligible but the upgrade is not yet offered Wait for the device-specific Windows Update rollout while preparing No fixed delivery date for every device
PC fails because of a setting that may be remediated Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for TPM or Secure Boot, then recheck Firmware changes are model-specific
PC is ineligible or essential hardware cannot be supported Plan a Windows 11-compatible replacement Higher cost and migration work
Windows 10 must remain temporarily Use any currently available, region-appropriate support extension only if the device qualifies, and plan the move Windows 10 remains outside normal support; any extension is limited and date-bound

There is no universal speed verdict. The available guidance does not establish that Windows 11 is faster on every computer. Responsiveness depends on the processor, storage, drivers, applications and workload in the particular machine.

What will the upgrade cost?

For an eligible personal PC, the Windows 11 upgrade offered through Windows Update may avoid the cost of buying another computer. The practical costs are your preparation time, any needed backup storage and possible application or peripheral updates. If a device fails a genuine processor, TPM, firmware or graphics requirement, replacing it is a much larger expense, so verify the failure before shopping.

ESU was not an open-ended substitute for a new operating system. Microsoft listed syncing PC settings at no additional cost, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or a one-time USD $30 payment plus applicable tax for eligible consumer devices, with regional variation. Those updates ended on the stated October 13, 2026 date, so check the current Microsoft page rather than assuming an enrollment option remains.

Prepare before installing

Back up files before making changes

Back up documents, photos, project folders, browser data and any other files that would be difficult to replace. Cloud storage is one option; an external drive is another. An external drive is not mandatory, but at least one independent copy is essential before a major operating-system change. Open a few backed-up files or otherwise verify that the copy is usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are considering an external drive, search for an external hard drive for backup and choose capacity based on the data you actually need to protect. Microsoft gives an external backup device as an example, not a universal requirement; a suitable cloud backup can serve the same planning purpose.

Check software and peripherals

List applications that matter for work, school, accessibility, music, games, accounting or specialized equipment. Check each publisher’s Windows 11 support information and confirm that you have current installers, subscription details and license or recovery information. Do the same for printers, scanners, cameras, audio interfaces, storage devices and other accessories. Minimum Windows requirements cannot establish compatibility for an individual application or peripheral.

Complete practical safeguards

  • Make sure you know the passwords and recovery methods for the Windows account, Microsoft account and important applications.
  • Ensure the system has adequate free storage for the chosen installation path.
  • Connect a laptop to AC power and avoid starting an upgrade when the battery is low.
  • Save work and close applications before installation.
  • Keep the backup available until you have checked the upgraded system and opened important files.

Upgrade through Windows Update

Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer Windows 11 on the device. This route uses Microsoft’s compatibility checks and is the least disruptive choice for a supported personal PC.

  1. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and read the Windows 11 eligibility or offer message.
  3. Review the compatibility result and make sure your backup and application checks are complete.
  4. Accept the Windows 11 installation when it is offered and follow the on-screen restart schedule. Keep the laptop connected to power.
  5. After the first sign-in, allow the system to finish its update process before judging the result. Reconnect and test essential applications and peripherals one at a time.

An eligible device may not show the offer immediately because rollout timing varies. The absence of an offer on one day is not, by itself, proof that the hardware fails the requirements.

When installation media is appropriate—and when it is dangerous

Microsoft’s installation guidance distinguishes an upgrade that can preserve files and applications from a fresh installation started by booting installation media. The selected setup option determines what is retained, so read each screen carefully.

Preserving the existing installation

An in-place setup path can preserve personal files and installed applications when the applicable option is selected. Back up first anyway: preservation is an installation choice, not a substitute for a recovery copy. Confirm that the setup screen explicitly describes retaining files and apps before continuing.

Clean installation

Booting from Windows 11 installation media for a fresh installation erases the existing Windows installation, files and installed applications on the target installation. Use this route only when you intentionally want a clean system and have verified a complete backup, installation media, application installers and account recovery information. A clean install is not a routine shortcut for an ineligible PC; unsupported hardware remains unsupported.

What to test after the upgrade

Use a short acceptance checklist rather than assuming that a successful boot means the migration is complete:

  • Sign in to the correct account and confirm that expected files are present.
  • Open the applications used most often and verify that their data loads.
  • Print a test page and check scanners, cameras, microphones, speakers and other essential peripherals.
  • Confirm that network access and any required storage devices work.
  • Check specialized software with its publisher if an error, missing feature or driver warning appears.
  • Keep the old backup until this testing is finished.

If you remain on Windows 10

Remaining on Windows 10 is a temporary risk-management decision, not an equivalent supported alternative. The operating system continues to run, but normal security and quality fixes ended on October 14, 2025. Consumer ESU, where offered, was limited to eligible version 22H2 personal devices, delivered only critical and important security updates and had a fixed final date of October 13, 2026. It was never a way to regain feature updates or ordinary technical support.

If your PC cannot upgrade today, reduce the time spent in this state. Confirm whether a firmware remediation can make it eligible, check the applications and peripherals that block replacement, preserve a verified backup and set a specific replacement or upgrade plan. Do not assume that continued Microsoft 365 application updates through October 10, 2028 make the underlying Windows installation supported.

When replacing the computer makes sense

A new Windows 11-compatible laptop or desktop is reasonable when the existing device fails a genuine hardware requirement, cannot support a required peripheral or application, or is no longer reliable enough to justify migration work. It is not automatically necessary for every Windows 10 owner. First separate a fixable configuration issue from a hard hardware limitation, then compare the cost and disruption of remediation with replacement.

Before buying, verify the new model against the same Windows 11 requirements and confirm support for the applications, printers and accessories you actually use. Plan how files, browser data, accounts and licenses will move. Microsoft also identifies purchase of a Windows 11 PC as an option and names trade-in or recycling partners, but program availability and terms vary by market.

Common failure points and responses

“PC Health Check says no, but the computer is fairly new.”

Read the specific reason. A disabled TPM or Secure Boot capability may be resolvable through the manufacturer’s instructions. An unsupported processor or missing hardware requirement generally cannot be fixed with a Windows setting. Do not bypass the check without understanding the support and security consequences.

“Windows Update has not offered Windows 11.”

Confirm that the computer runs Windows 10 version 2004 or later, run PC Health Check and install available Windows 10 updates. If the device qualifies, rollout timing can still vary. Avoid treating a delayed offer as a failure or forcing a clean installation before backing up.

“An application or printer stopped working.”

Check the publisher or manufacturer’s Windows 11 support page and install the current driver or application version. If the device is mission-critical, restore the backup or use the documented recovery path rather than deleting more files while troubleshooting.

“The installation screen offers to remove files and apps.”

Stop and recheck the selected setup option. A clean installation from bootable media wipes the existing installation, files and applications. Continue only if that is intentional and the backup has been verified.

Bottom line for the upgrade decision

Check first, then upgrade. A supported PC with compatible applications should generally move to Windows 11 through the Windows Update offer after a verified backup. A setting-related failure may be fixable with model-specific firmware guidance. A genuine hardware failure or incompatible essential device points toward replacement. Staying on Windows 10 leaves the computer functioning but outside normal operating-system support, and the consumer ESU deadline of October 13, 2026 is already past.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a new computer to move from Windows 10 to Windows 11?

Not necessarily. Run PC Health Check and review Windows Update first. If the processor, TPM, firmware, graphics or another requirement fails, or a critical peripheral is unsupported, then compare the cost of remediation with a Windows 11-compatible replacement.

Can I keep using Windows 10 after October 14, 2025?

The computer continues to run, but covered editions no longer receive normal security fixes, quality updates, feature updates or technical assistance. Continued operation should not be confused with supported security. Any consumer ESU coverage had a fixed end date of October 13, 2026.

Why is Windows 11 not appearing in Windows Update?

Eligibility and rollout are separate. Confirm that Windows 10 is version 2004 or later, run PC Health Check and install available updates. Microsoft offers Windows 11 by device, so a qualifying computer may receive the offer later than another one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 4 GB of RAM enough for Windows 11?

Four gigabytes is Microsoft’s minimum requirement, not a guarantee of comfortable performance. Large applications, many browser tabs and specialized workloads can need more. Judge the whole system and your workload rather than treating the minimum as a recommendation.

Will upgrading preserve my files and programs?

An in-place setup can preserve files and installed applications when the correct option is selected, but back up first. Booting installation media for a fresh installation erases the existing Windows installation, files and installed applications on the target installation.

Can I enable TPM or Secure Boot myself?

Some systems have the capability disabled and can be remediated, but the exact process is model-specific. Follow the computer manufacturer’s instructions and do not change firmware settings by trial and error, because an incorrect change can affect booting or encryption.

Will my printer or specialist software work on Windows 11?

Minimum Windows requirements cannot answer that question. Check the publisher’s or manufacturer’s Windows 11 support page, obtain current drivers or installers and test mission-critical equipment before relying on the upgraded system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Microsoft 365 updates mean Windows 10 is still supported?

No. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps can receive security updates on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028, but that application-specific schedule does not restore Windows 10 operating-system security fixes or technical support.

The Bottom Line

Check compatibility, back up, then choose the least disruptive supported path. Upgrade an eligible PC through Windows Update, remediate only with model-specific guidance, and replace hardware when a genuine requirement or essential compatibility problem leaves no safe upgrade route.
