Windows 11 vs. Linux for an Older PC: Which Should You Choose in 2026?

There is no universal winner. Choose Windows 11 when the computer officially qualifies and you depend on Windows-only applications, games, drivers, or familiar workflows. Choose Linux when the machine cannot meet Windows 11’s requirements, when you want a supported alternative after Windows 10’s end of ordinary support, or when a suitable lightweight Linux desktop fits your hardware and software needs. The safest method is to identify the exact PC, check compatibility, and test Linux from a live USB session before changing the disk.

What matters more than the operating-system name

“Linux” is a family of operating systems rather than one desktop. Linux Mint, standard Ubuntu Desktop, and lighter Ubuntu flavors can have materially different hardware expectations and user interfaces. Windows 11 is more consistent as a product, but its official eligibility rules are strict and depend on firmware, security hardware, processor model, memory, storage, and graphics support.

Performance also cannot be reduced to a slogan. The available published figures are installation or comfortable-use requirements, not head-to-head speed tests. A computer with a healthy solid-state drive, adequate memory, and working drivers may feel responsive under either system; a machine with failing storage, limited memory, overheating, or unsupported peripherals can perform poorly regardless of the operating system.

Requirement Microsoft’s published minimum What it means for an older PC
Processor 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, and a model on Microsoft’s approved CPU list Clock speed alone is not enough. An older processor can fail because its exact model is not approved.
Memory 4 GB RAM This is a minimum for installation, not a guarantee of comfortable multitasking.
Storage 64 GB The operating system needs room beyond the bare installation threshold for updates and applications.
Firmware UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable Legacy BIOS-only systems do not meet the published configuration.
Security module TPM 2.0 The module may exist but be disabled in firmware, so check the setup utility before assuming the PC lacks it.
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver Very old integrated or discrete graphics can fail the driver requirement even if the computer displays an image.
Display Screen larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution This is rarely the limiting factor on a conventional desktop or laptop.

Read the complete criteria on Microsoft’s Windows 11 System Requirements page. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check or Windows Update to evaluate the particular computer rather than inferring eligibility from age or processor frequency.

Setup requirements people often discover late

Microsoft states that Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. That requirement is separate from whether the computer can technically install Windows 11. Plan for it when reinstalling the system or setting up a reset machine.

Minimum hardware is not a performance promise

A computer that passes the checklist may still feel slow if it has only 4 GB of RAM, a mechanical hard drive, a heavily worn drive, or applications that demand more resources. Conversely, a newer dual-core machine with an SSD and sufficient memory may be perfectly usable for browsing, documents, and media. Microsoft’s numbers establish a supported baseline, not a benchmark or user-experience guarantee.

What Windows 10’s end of support changes

Windows 10 version 22H2 was serviced through October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle information. After that date, ordinary servicing no longer provides security updates, feature updates, or technical support. A computer that cannot officially run Windows 11 therefore needs a deliberate plan rather than an indefinite Windows 10 installation.

Microsoft says individual consumers can enroll in a paid Extended Security Updates program for Critical and Important security updates. Terms and eligibility can change, so check the current details in Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ before treating ESU as a long-term solution. ESU does not make an otherwise unsupported PC officially eligible for Windows 11, and it does not remove Windows 11’s processor, TPM, firmware, or other requirements.

Linux requirements vary by desktop

Use the requirements for the exact Linux distribution and desktop you intend to install. Calling every Linux option “lightweight” is inaccurate.

Why the desktop choice matters

Standard Ubuntu Desktop has a richer desktop environment and a higher published comfortable-use figure than Linux Mint’s FAQ. Canonical explicitly says that systems with lower specifications should use an official flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu instead. That is a distribution-specific recommendation, not proof that all Linux systems outperform Windows.

Windows 11 versus Linux: a practical comparison

Decision area Windows 11 Linux
Official support on an old PC Requires the exact processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics, and display criteria. Depends on the chosen distribution and desktop; lighter flavors can target lower-spec systems.
Windows-specific software Usually the least disruptive choice for applications designed for Windows. Compatibility varies by application. Verify every work, school, creative, accounting, or device-management tool before switching.
Games Often the safer choice when a game, launcher, anti-cheat system, or peripheral explicitly requires Windows. Some games work well, while others do not; check each title and launcher rather than assuming compatibility.
Printers and peripherals Vendor drivers and utilities may already be available for the computer. Basic devices may work immediately, but exact printer, Wi-Fi, graphics, scanner, Bluetooth, and specialty-device support must be tested.
Learning curve Familiar to many existing PC users. May require learning different applications, settings, package-management procedures, and troubleshooting methods.
Support horizon Windows 11 support depends on edition and servicing policy; unsupported Windows 10 ordinary support ended in 2025. Support is release-specific. Mint LTS releases state five-year support; Ubuntu 26.04 LTS states five years through April 2031, with Ubuntu Pro ESM extending coverage.

Which choice fits common older-PC situations?

The PC passes Windows 11 checks and runs essential Windows software

Windows 11 is usually the lower-risk choice. You keep established application workflows, vendor utilities, game compatibility, and familiar settings. Before upgrading, make a full backup, confirm free storage, and check that the computer’s manufacturer provides drivers or firmware updates for the intended Windows release.

The PC fails because of RAM or storage capacity

First determine whether an upgrade is technically possible for that exact model. The available evidence does not establish memory-slot type, maximum supported RAM, drive interface, or part compatibility for any particular PC, so do not buy a module or drive based only on a generic age estimate. If an upgrade is impossible or uneconomic, compare a Linux desktop’s published requirements with the machine’s actual specifications.

The PC fails the processor, TPM, or firmware check

Linux may be a practical supported path, provided your required applications and devices work with the chosen distribution. Installing Windows 11 through unofficial bypasses can produce an unsupported configuration and should not be treated as equivalent to meeting Microsoft’s requirements.

You mainly browse, write, email, and play local media

A suitable Linux desktop can cover these tasks, but test the browser features, document formats, cloud services, media codecs, and printer before committing. Linux Mint or an official lighter Ubuntu flavor may be more appropriate than standard Ubuntu Desktop on a low-memory machine.

You rely on one irreplaceable Windows-only program or game

Do not switch the production installation until you have verified that program with its vendor or tested it on a spare drive. A Linux desktop’s lower hardware threshold does not guarantee that a proprietary application, anti-cheat component, plug-in, or specialized peripheral will function.

How to make the decision safely

  1. Record the exact hardware. Note the model, processor, installed RAM, storage capacity and condition, graphics hardware, Wi-Fi adapter, sound device, printer, scanner, external drives, and any specialist peripherals. Record whether firmware is UEFI or legacy BIOS.
  2. Run the Windows 11 check. Use PC Health Check or Windows Update, then identify the specific failed requirement. A generic message such as “processor not supported” is more useful when paired with the exact CPU model.
  3. List must-have software and services. Include work and school tools, accounting or creative applications, browser extensions, VPN clients, game launchers, accessibility tools, and hardware-control utilities. Verify each item with its vendor or through a test installation.
  4. Choose a Linux edition based on the hardware. Compare the current requirements for Linux Mint, standard Ubuntu Desktop, or an official lighter flavor. Do not use one distribution’s numbers as a universal Linux threshold.
  5. Back up before experimenting. Copy documents, photographs, browser data, license information, saved games, and recovery keys to separate storage. A live session is safer than immediately repartitioning the internal drive, but it is not a substitute for a backup.
  6. Create bootable installation media. Ubuntu’s official guide explains how to create a bootable USB flash drive and lists USB or DVD as installer-media options: Ubuntu Desktop download and installation. A USB drive is installation media, not a performance upgrade.
  7. Boot the live session. Select the option to try the system without installing it. Test display resolution, wired and wireless networking, sound output and microphone, suspend and resume, keyboard shortcuts, webcams, Bluetooth, printers, external storage, and any critical device.
  8. Test real work, not just the desktop. Open representative documents, connect to the services you use, print a page, play the games or media that matter, and check whether the system recognizes the required graphics or Wi-Fi hardware.
  9. Choose an installation strategy. If compatibility is good, you can replace Windows after confirming backups. If you still need Windows, consider keeping a separate Windows installation or using another computer rather than deleting a working environment prematurely. Exact dual-boot steps vary by firmware, disk layout, encryption, and distribution.
  10. Plan updates and recovery. Record the distribution and release, enable its normal security updates, keep recovery media, and retain a tested backup. Support dates apply to specific releases, not to “Linux” in the abstract.

What to test in a Linux live session

  • Wireless networking: connect to the normal home or workplace network and test reconnection after a reboot.
  • Graphics: check native resolution, external displays, brightness controls, video playback, and sleep/wake behavior.
  • Audio: test speakers, headphones, microphone input, volume keys, and any Bluetooth headset.
  • Input and accessibility: test the keyboard, touchpad, mouse, screen reader or magnification tools, and language layouts you actually use.
  • Printing and scanning: perform a print and scan job rather than relying on the device being detected.
  • Storage and cameras: mount external drives, read and write a sample file, and test the webcam in the application you need.
  • Thermals and battery: on a laptop, leave the system running long enough to observe fan behavior, charging, suspend, and battery reporting.

A live session can expose basic hardware compatibility, but it may run from a slower USB drive and may not reflect installed-system performance. Treat it as a compatibility check, not a benchmark.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every Linux distribution is lighter than Windows

Linux desktops differ. Standard Ubuntu Desktop publishes a 6 GB RAM comfortable-use figure, while Linux Mint recommends 4 GB for comfortable use and Canonical directs lower-spec Ubuntu users toward lighter flavors. Select the desktop deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing minimum requirements with comfortable use

Four gigabytes of RAM is Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum; it is not a promise that multiple browser tabs and modern applications will feel fast. Linux Mint’s 2 GB figure is a minimum, with 4 GB recommended. Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS lists 6 GB for comfortable use.

Using an unsupported Windows 11 workaround as a normal upgrade

A bypass may install on hardware outside Microsoft’s published requirements, but it does not turn that computer into a supported configuration. If reliability and security updates matter, compare a supported Windows path, eligible ESU, or a supported Linux release instead.

Checking only the laptop’s age

Two computers from the same year can have different processors, firmware, Wi-Fi chips, graphics, and upgrade options. The exact model and components determine the outcome.

Deleting Windows before testing critical tasks

Use the live session, a spare drive, or another reversible test arrangement first. Keep recovery media and backups until the replacement system has handled your actual work.

Assuming support lasts forever

Linux Mint’s five-year LTS policy and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS’s support through April 2031 apply to specified releases. Windows servicing also varies by edition and version. Write the end date next to the release you install and plan the next upgrade.

Bottom-line decision

For an older PC that officially qualifies for Windows 11 and depends on Windows applications, games, or vendor-specific hardware, Windows 11 is generally the least disruptive choice. For a PC that fails Windows 11’s processor, TPM, or firmware rules—or for a Windows 10 installation now beyond ordinary support—Linux can keep the machine useful when you select a suitable desktop and verify compatibility.

Do not choose Linux solely because someone says it is always faster, and do not choose Windows 11 solely because the installer can be made to run. Check the exact hardware, workload, support horizon, and peripherals; then boot a Linux live session before making the change. That process produces a safer answer than any blanket operating-system verdict.
