Short answer: Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check to see whether a PC qualifies for Windows 11, then verify individual apps and accessories with their publishers or manufacturers. An update keeps your existing Windows version current; an upgrade moves you to a new version. Windows may restart to finish either process, but Active hours and restart choices can reduce disruption. If an update causes trouble, uninstall that update. If a full version upgrade is the problem, use Go back—usually within 10 days and only while the required recovery files remain.
What counts as a Windows 11 update, and what counts as an upgrade?
Microsoft uses “update” and “upgrade” for different changes. An update adds security fixes, reliability improvements, drivers, firmware, .NET components, or new features while keeping the same Windows version. A version upgrade moves the computer to a later Windows release; moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is an upgrade, not an ordinary update.

Windows feature updates are typically released once a year. Quality and security updates arrive more frequently. The distinction matters when you troubleshoot: removing a single update uses Uninstall updates, while returning from a newly installed Windows version uses Go back. These are separate recovery paths with different time limits and consequences.
How can I determine if my PC qualifies for Windows 11?
Run PC Health Check
Microsoft recommends the PC Health Check app to assess whether a device meets Windows 11’s minimum requirements. Install or open the app, select the Windows 11 eligibility check, and review the result. The check evaluates the device itself; it does not certify every program, peripheral, or driver connected to it.

Check Windows Update as a second signal
Windows Update also evaluates whether a particular Windows 10 installation is eligible for the upgrade. A device can meet the technical requirements yet not receive the upgrade immediately because Microsoft is controlling the rollout, investigating a known compatibility hold, or waiting for a suitable driver.
Verify software and accessories separately
Eligibility is not the same as application compatibility. Microsoft directs users to the software publisher for a specific app and to the accessory manufacturer for a printer, scanner, camera, audio interface, game controller, or other device. Look for a Windows 11 support statement, a current installer, and a driver intended for your hardware model.
- Record the names and versions of applications you rely on for work, school, accounting, accessibility, or security.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page for each essential accessory and its exact model number.
- Back up files before starting an upgrade, even when the upgrade is expected to preserve them.
Will my apps stop working after an upgrade?
Some applications can be removed during an upgrade when Microsoft identifies them as a cause of upgrade problems or as software that may not work correctly with Windows 11. Other apps may remain installed but require an updated version, a new license activation, or a compatible driver.
Do not assume that a program that worked on an earlier Windows version will continue unchanged. Before upgrading, ask the publisher whether the current release supports your target Windows 11 version. Export settings, save license keys, and make sure you have installation media or download access for critical programs. If an app is business-critical, test its current release on a spare computer or a non-production device first.
When will Windows restart, and how can I choose a convenient time?
Why a restart is required
Windows sometimes needs to restart to replace files that are in use, load a new kernel or driver, or complete firmware and .NET installation. A restart requirement does not necessarily mean that something went wrong; it usually means the installation is waiting for the final stage.

Set Active hours
Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Depending on the Windows 11 experience on your PC, choose a manual interval or allow Windows to adjust the hours from your device activity. Windows tries to restart outside those hours when possible.
Active hours are a scheduling preference, not a permanent block. They do not remove the update, and they cannot guarantee an indefinite delay when an update is urgent or a deadline is reached. Leave the computer powered and connected when you want installation to finish, and close applications before a planned restart.
Restart immediately when you are ready
When an update is waiting, Windows can show Restart now, Update and restart, or Update and shut down. Selecting one of these options lets you choose the moment rather than waiting for Windows to restart outside your active hours.
Does Windows 11 now restart only once a month?
No. Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 guidance describes a gradually rolling-out combined-restart experience, not a universal promise for every Windows 11 computer. For eligible devices running Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, or 26H1, certain restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates released on or after July 28, 2026 are being combined with the monthly security update so that they can be completed with one restart.
The intended result, in Microsoft’s words, is “a more predictable update experience with fewer interruptions.” Availability depends on the staged rollout and the device’s update state. The following categories remain exceptions or may follow a different schedule:

- Microsoft Defender security intelligence updates.
- AI component updates.
- Critical or expedited driver updates.
- Emergency or out-of-band updates.
- Updates that do not need a restart.
Therefore, a computer in an eligible version may still restart at another time. Treat the monthly behavior as a rollout feature for qualifying updates, not as a guarantee that all Windows 11 PCs restart only once per month.
Can I pause Windows 11 updates?
Windows Update provides a temporary pause control. Microsoft’s 2026 guidance describes a maximum pause of up to 35 days for eligible devices using the gradually rolling-out combined-restart experience. The exact control and duration can vary while the feature is being deployed. When the pause ends, Windows checks for updates again.
Use a pause to avoid an installation during travel, a presentation, or a short maintenance blackout—not as a substitute for installing security fixes. Before the pause expires, save work, connect the PC to power, and schedule a restart window. If your Settings page shows a shorter period, that is the limit currently offered to that device.
How do I remove an installed update that caused a problem?
If Windows starts normally
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Update history.
- Choose Uninstall updates.
- Select the update associated with the new error and confirm the removal.
Restart when Windows requests it, then test the application, device, or function that failed. If the issue returns only after Windows Update reinstalls the same package, pause updates temporarily while you obtain a corrected driver or application version.
If Windows will not open normally
Enter the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). From the recovery menus, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then select the available update-removal option. If BitLocker device encryption is enabled, Windows may ask for the recovery key.

Important limits and security trade-offs
Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update also removes the protection it supplied, so use this route to isolate a fault, not as a routine maintenance step. Microsoft’s uninstall guidance recommends trying to reinstall or repair the current Windows version first on Windows 11 when that option is offered. Keep the computer offline or otherwise protected while a security fix is absent, and reinstall the corrected update as soon as Microsoft or the device manufacturer provides one.

Use Go back within the available window
This procedure applies to a recent version upgrade, such as moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11. It is not the remedy for a single monthly quality update. Open Settings > System > Recovery. If Go back is available, select it and follow the prompts. Microsoft says that, in most cases, the option remains available for 10 days after the upgrade.
What the rollback keeps and removes
Go back keeps personal files. It removes applications and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since the upgrade. Reinstall or reconfigure those items after you return to the earlier version.
Preserve the files and accounts rollback needs
Do not delete the windows.old or $windows.~bt folders before starting. They contain the previous installation and setup data needed for the rollback. Remove user accounts created after the upgrade, or make sure their data is backed up before proceeding. If a USB drive was used to perform the upgrade, Microsoft says to have that same installation drive available when going back.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Copy important files to another drive or trusted cloud storage before selecting Go back.
- Record passwords, encryption keys, application installers, and license information.
- Connect the PC to power and avoid interrupting the rollback once it begins.
What if Go back is no longer available?
After the usual 10-day period, the built-in rollback normally cannot use the previous installation. Microsoft’s documented route is to back up files manually and perform a clean installation of the earlier Windows version. A clean install erases the existing Windows installation, so verify backups and obtain the correct installation media and product entitlements first.
Which recovery option fits the problem?
| What happened | Use this option | Availability and effect |
|---|---|---|
| A recent individual update is followed by crashes, a failed driver, or another new error. | Uninstall the update | Use Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, or Windows RE if Windows will not start. Some updates cannot be removed; removing a security update has security consequences. |
| A full Windows version upgrade introduced incompatibility or instability. | Go back | Usually available for 10 days. Personal files remain, while post-upgrade apps and drivers are removed and settings changes are reversed. The required recovery folders must still exist. |
| You only need to avoid an inconvenient restart. | Set Active hours or schedule a restart | Active hours guide automatic restart timing. They do not remove the update or guarantee that installation can be deferred indefinitely. |
A safe Windows 11 upgrade checklist
- Check eligibility: run PC Health Check and review the Windows Update offer.
- Check dependencies: confirm support for essential apps and accessories with each publisher or manufacturer.
- Back up: create a separate copy of personal files and export application data before upgrading.
- Prepare recovery: keep installation media, encryption-recovery information, and essential installers available.
- Choose timing: set Active hours and plan a period when a restart will not interrupt work.
- Install and observe: allow the process to complete on power, then test important apps, printers, storage, audio, networking, and security tools.
- Record the result: note the Windows version, driver versions, and any changed settings so troubleshooting has a clear baseline.
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Confusing an update with an upgrade: removing a monthly package will not return the computer to Windows 10; use Go back for a version change.
- Deleting recovery folders: removing
windows.oldor$windows.~btcan eliminate the built-in rollback path. - Assuming eligibility proves compatibility: PC Health Check does not test every third-party app or accessory.
- Expecting Active hours to block all restarts: urgent or expedited updates can follow different rules.
- Removing a security fix without a plan: uninstalling it can leave a known vulnerability exposed.
- Waiting beyond the rollback window: after the usual 10 days, returning to the prior version generally requires backup and a clean install.
The practical answer for most Windows 11 users
Start with PC Health Check, then verify the programs and hardware that matter to you. Let Windows install routine updates, but use Active hours or a planned restart to protect your work time. The 2026 combined-restart experience may reduce interruptions on eligible versions, yet it is still rolling out and does not cover every update. If a single update breaks something, uninstall that update when possible. If the entire new Windows version is unsuitable, use Go back promptly—usually within 10 days—and preserve the recovery folders and installation media it requires.
