To use two-finger scrolling in Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad, then place two fingers on the touchpad and slide them horizontally or vertically. That is the standard Windows gesture for scrolling. If the Touchpad page does not show the expected controls, check whether Windows identifies the hardware as a precision touchpad; non-precision devices may require the computer maker’s touchpad software instead.
Enable two-finger scrolling in Windows 11
Windows 11 documents two-finger scrolling as a gesture rather than as a separate three-finger or four-finger setting. After opening the Touchpad page, put two fingers on the touchpad and move them together up, down, left or right. A vertical movement scrolls a page up or down; a horizontal movement scrolls content sideways when the application supports horizontal scrolling.

What the Touchpad page tells you about your hardware
Windows does not expose identical gesture controls on every laptop. On a supported precision touchpad, the Touchpad settings page displays the exact message “Your PC has a precision touchpad.” That message is the quickest way to determine which Windows gesture experience your device is using.

Precision touchpads
Precision touchpads are managed through Windows’ own Touchpad settings. They generally expose the gesture categories and advanced controls that Microsoft documents. The two-finger movement is the basic scrolling gesture; newer controls described in Windows 11 update notes are additions, not replacements for it.
Non-precision touchpads
If the precision-touchpad message is absent, Windows may be relying on a manufacturer-specific driver and control panel. The Touchpad page can therefore look different, contain fewer options, or omit a Windows-level gesture switch. Microsoft advises checking Additional settings for a touchpad tab or the manufacturer’s software, then contacting the hardware maker if those steps do not help. Menu names vary by model, Windows build and driver, so do not expect every laptop to use the same labels. The fallback guidance is described by Microsoft at its precision and non-precision touchpad troubleshooting page.
Do you need to turn on a separate scrolling switch?
For a precision touchpad, Microsoft’s basic instruction focuses on performing the two-finger movement. The documentation does not require changing the three-finger or four-finger gesture menus to make ordinary two-finger scrolling work. If two fingers do not scroll after you reach the Touchpad page, treat the problem as a hardware, driver or manufacturer-settings issue rather than changing unrelated gesture categories.

Newer scrolling controls in Windows 11 updates
Windows 11’s 2026 update notes describe extra controls for precision touchpads. These settings supplement the normal two-finger gesture and may be absent on devices that do not meet the relevant hardware or software requirements.
| Update note | Additional control described | What it changes | Availability qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| August 27, 2026, KB5120996 | Scroll and zoom speed | Provides a way to adjust how quickly scrolling or zooming responds. | Described for precision touchpads; the note does not establish that every Windows 11 device receives the control. |
| August 27, 2026, KB5120996 | Accelerated scrolling | Scrolling becomes faster when the gesture is repeated. | Described for precision touchpads and dependent on the installed update and device support. |
| September 22, 2026, KB5124010 | Single-finger scrolling | Adds a single-finger scrolling option on supported precision touchpads. | The note describes an additional control; it does not replace the two-finger instructions. |
| September 22, 2026, KB5124010 | Automatic scrolling | Adds an automatic-scrolling option on supported precision touchpads. | Availability depends on the device and installed Windows update. |
If you cannot find one of these newer controls, that alone does not mean two-finger scrolling is disabled. First test the standard two-finger movement and confirm the touchpad type.
How to test the gesture correctly
- Place both fingertips near the center of the touchpad, with enough space between them for the pad to register two contacts.
- Keep both fingers on the surface while moving them in the same direction. Lifting one finger during the movement can turn the action into a one-finger pointer movement.
- Use a slow vertical stroke in a long web page or document. This makes it easier to distinguish scrolling from pointer movement.
- Try a horizontal stroke on content that has a horizontal scrollbar. Applications decide whether sideways scrolling is supported.
- Test in more than one application. If the gesture works in one program but not another, the difference may be application behavior rather than the Windows touchpad setting.
What to do when two-finger scrolling does nothing
1. Confirm that Windows sees a touchpad
Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. If the Touchpad page is missing altogether, Windows may not be detecting the device or its driver. If the page exists but has limited controls, look for the precision-touchpad message and continue with the matching branch below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Check the precision-touchpad status
When Windows displays “Your PC has a precision touchpad,” use the Windows Touchpad page as the primary settings location. If that message is not shown, look for Additional settings and a touchpad tab or a device-specific utility. The exact utility and labels depend on the manufacturer and model.

- Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content.
- It features a large edge-to-edge glass surface area, making scrolling and swiping through your favourite content more productive and comfortable than ever.
- Magic Trackpad pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
3. Inspect Additional settings on a non-precision device
Open Additional settings from the Touchpad area when that link is available. Look for a tab or panel named for the touchpad, pointing device or device manufacturer. The two-finger option may be located there rather than in the modern Windows Settings page. Microsoft specifically recommends this route for non-precision hardware.
4. Use the laptop maker’s support software
If the manufacturer supplied a touchpad control application, open it and look for scrolling or multi-finger gesture settings. Do not assume that a missing Windows toggle proves the hardware cannot scroll; the manufacturer’s driver may own the setting. Conversely, Windows cannot promise a precision-style menu on hardware that does not provide that touchpad experience.
5. Check device-specific support
If the touchpad is still unresponsive, use the computer manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model and installed Windows edition. Microsoft’s guidance is to contact the hardware manufacturer when the Additional settings or manufacturer-software path does not solve the problem. A model-specific driver or firmware requirement can only be confirmed by that maker.

Common mistakes that make the feature seem disabled
- Looking in the wrong gesture section: Three-finger and four-finger menus are not where the basic two-finger scroll movement is defined.
- Expecting every laptop to have the same controls: Precision and non-precision touchpads use different Windows experiences.
- Searching for a setting named exactly “two-finger scrolling”: Microsoft’s core instruction is the physical gesture; the control may be represented by a general touchpad page or manufacturer tab.
- Assuming a newer update feature is universal: Scroll speed, accelerated scrolling, single-finger scrolling and automatic scrolling are described as additional precision-touchpad controls, not guaranteed options on every Windows 11 installation.
- Testing only one application: A program may not support horizontal scrolling, or may interpret touchpad input differently from another program.
When the missing option is expected behavior
A missing menu is not automatically a fault. Windows identifies precision touchpads explicitly, and Microsoft notes that some advanced gestures require them. A non-precision device may expose its controls through the classic Additional settings dialog or through software supplied by the computer maker. The correct next step is therefore determined by the touchpad type shown in Settings, not by comparing your menu with a screenshot from another laptop.

- Extra Large Metal Touchpad: 6.4-inch large touchscreen, measuring 6.4*4.8*0.4 inches, combined with an ultra-smooth surface, provides a more comfortable and efficient user experience for performing a variety of operations
The same qualification applies to the 2026 scrolling additions. Microsoft’s August 27 and September 22 update notes describe the controls for precision touchpads, but they do not say that every Windows 11 computer receives every option. Hardware support, Windows version and the installed update all affect what appears.
Quick decision guide
| What you see | Best next action |
|---|---|
| Touchpad page and “Your PC has a precision touchpad” | Use the two-finger movement first; inspect the Windows Touchpad controls for any optional scrolling settings your update and device support. |
| Touchpad page, but no precision message | Open Additional settings and look for the manufacturer’s touchpad tab or utility. |
| No Touchpad page | Windows may not be detecting the hardware or its driver; follow the computer maker’s model-specific support path. |
| Two-finger scrolling works in one application only | Check the other application’s scrolling behavior and whether it supports horizontal or touchpad scrolling. |
| Expected 2026 speed or automatic-scrolling control is absent | Continue using the standard gesture and verify the Windows update, precision-touchpad status and device support before treating the absence as an error. |
What “enabled” means in practice
For this feature, “enabled” has two parts: Windows must detect a usable touchpad, and the touchpad driver must recognize the two-contact movement. On a precision touchpad, the Windows Settings route is the authoritative place to identify the hardware and access supported controls. On a non-precision touchpad, the equivalent setting may live outside the modern Settings page.
There is no universal Windows 11 menu that can add precision-touchpad gestures to hardware that does not provide them. If the manufacturer does not expose two-finger scrolling for a particular model, changing an unrelated Windows gesture category will not create that capability. The reliable escalation is the model-specific manufacturer support route identified in Microsoft’s guidance.
Frequently needed answers
Is two-finger scrolling available on every Windows 11 laptop?
No. Windows’ precision-touchpad experience and advanced gestures depend on the touchpad hardware and driver. Non-precision devices may use manufacturer software and may not expose the same controls.

Should I change three-finger or four-finger gestures?
No. Those are separate gesture categories. Basic scrolling uses two fingers moving horizontally or vertically.
Why is there no “scroll speed” option?
The 2026 update notes describe scroll and zoom speed for supported precision touchpads, but availability is device- and update-dependent. Its absence does not prevent the standard two-finger gesture.
Can I force the feature through Windows if the laptop is non-precision?
Windows does not promise a precision-style control set for non-precision hardware. Check Additional settings and the manufacturer’s touchpad software or support documentation instead.
