If Windows 11 says “Your device ran into a problem and couldn’t be repaired” and shows an SrtTrail.txt path, it is usually reporting that Startup Repair could not resolve a startup problem—not naming the failed component. Start with one careful retry of Startup Repair, then choose a rollback that fits what happened before the failure. Check for a BitLocker recovery key and protect important files before attempting a reset or reinstall.
First, identify which error you are seeing
A Startup Repair failure screen may say that Windows could not repair your PC and show a path to SrtTrail.txt. That is different from a blue- or black-screen stop-code error that says Windows needs to restart. Microsoft says stop-code screens can vary by Windows 11 version and may show a code or, when available, a module name.

Write down the exact message, any stop code, the full log path, and what happened just before the problem began—such as an update, a new device, a driver or software change, or a power interruption. The wording and log are clues, not proof of a particular cause. Microsoft lists several possible startup faults, and unexpected restarts can also involve hardware, drivers, or software.

Protect your files and check for BitLocker first
If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, locate the recovery key before starting recovery. WinRE may ask for it to access recovery tools. If Windows still starts intermittently, or you can access the drive from another computer, back up important files before making changes.

If files are irreplaceable and the storage device may be failing, do not begin with Reset this PC or reinstalling Windows. The error by itself does not establish that a drive has failed; seek help preserving the data if there are additional signs of a hardware problem.
Retry Startup Repair once
Startup Repair is Microsoft’s built-in tool for fixing some problems that prevent Windows from starting. It attempts to address issues such as missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It is an initial recovery option, not a guarantee.
- In the recovery environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, enter the BitLocker recovery key if requested, and select Restart when prompted.
- If Startup Repair fails again, note the exact details and stop repeating it indefinitely. Microsoft documents the log at
%windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt.
In recovery, drive letters can differ from their usual letters in Windows, so do not assume that the installed Windows partition is C: when interpreting an offline path or following advanced instructions. Microsoft’s Windows startup issues troubleshooting guidance describes the log and further diagnostic context.

Choose a rollback that matches what changed
Use one recovery option at a time, then restart and check whether Windows starts before moving to the next. The best fit depends on when the failure began and which recovery points are available.
| Option | When it fits | Data impact and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall Updates | The problem began after a Windows update. | Microsoft says personal files and apps are not affected, though some updates cannot be uninstalled. |
| System Restore | A restore point predates a driver, software, or system change. | Rolls back system files and settings while keeping personal files; recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings may be affected. |
| Point-in-time restore | Windows 11 version 24H2 or later offers an appropriate restore point. | Can roll back personal files, apps, and settings; changes made after the chosen point are lost. |
If the problem followed an update
In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then follow the available choices. Select the update type that matches the timing of the failure. If Windows will not start after a recent quality or feature update, this is a more targeted next step than resetting the PC.
If the problem followed a driver or software change
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore if a suitable restore point exists. System Restore reverses system files and settings without removing personal files, but software, drivers, updates, or settings added after the restore point may be affected.

If Point-in-time restore is available
Microsoft documents Point-in-time restore for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. It may appear in WinRE when an appropriate automatic restore point is available. Unlike System Restore, it can also roll back personal files, so changes after the selected point—including files—will be lost.

If less disruptive recovery options do not work, Reset this PC offers a choice to keep personal files or remove everything. Either choice removes apps and settings. Back up what you can first and make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key and any credentials needed to access backed-up data.
A Windows reinstall using installation media is more destructive: Microsoft says it removes everything from the device. It also requires another working PC to create the media. A USB flash drive is needed only if you choose this installation-media route; it does not fix the PC by itself and is not needed for Startup Repair, System Restore, or uninstalling an update. Check the computer maker’s recovery guidance if you need device-specific drivers or factory applications.
Know when to stop and get help
- Stop before reset or reinstall if the files are not backed up and are important to preserve.
- Seek device-manufacturer or qualified repair and data-recovery help if firmware does not detect the storage device or hardware diagnostics report a fault.
- For a work- or school-managed PC, contact your IT department if the recovery choices do not resolve the issue.
Windows 11 version 24H2 or later may also offer Quick Machine Recovery, which can detect repeated boot failures and try a Windows Update fix during a widespread outage if the feature is enabled. It is enabled by default on Home; Pro and Enterprise may require an IT administrator to enable it. A fix is not guaranteed, and availability depends on version, edition, configuration, and management. See Microsoft’s recovery options in Windows for the available recovery paths and their effects.
