Use Windows Sandbox for a bounded, one-off experiment with an untrusted application, provided you explicitly reduce its sharing with the host. Its documented default configuration enables networking and clipboard redirection, so an AI agent can potentially reach external services or move data across the boundary unless you change those settings.
For a Windows-integrated agent that needs its own identity, permissions and persistent project workflow, evaluate Microsoft’s separate agent-account and agent-workspace model when the exact controls are released and documented for your device. Microsoft has not established that an agent workspace is another name for Windows Sandbox, and recent reports of a product called Microsoft Execution Containers are not confirmed by primary Microsoft documentation.

What is actually being compared?
The phrase security containers is being used for more than one technology. Windows Sandbox is a documented Windows feature with a defined configuration file and a disposable lifecycle. Microsoft’s Windows 11 agentic-security guidance describes a different design: a distinct account for an agent, narrowly granted permissions and an agent workspace with runtime isolation. That page presents the controls as part of Microsoft’s evolving agent-security direction, not as a statement that every Windows agent already has those capabilities.

A secondary report dated October 9, 2026, describes an MXC Sandbox for Codex on Windows, but the primary Microsoft sources available for this comparison do not confirm its release status, supported builds, policy controls or isolation guarantees. Treat those details as unverified until Microsoft publishes them.

Why Windows Sandbox is useful—and where its boundary is weak
Windows Sandbox starts a temporary Windows environment from a dynamically generated image; you do not maintain a second, separately downloaded Windows installation. When you close it, Windows prompts you to confirm deletion of the session’s contents. This makes it practical for opening a suspicious document, testing an installer or running an agent for a single task without leaving the agent’s ordinary files and processes in place. See Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox architecture and configuration guide.
Disposal does not mean total isolation from the host. In the documented default configuration, networking and clipboard redirection are enabled. The default also enables a virtualized GPU on non-Arm64 devices, shares host microphone input, disables video input and printer redirection, and leaves Protected Client mode disabled. The guide describes 4 GB as the default Sandbox memory capacity. Defaults can change with Windows builds, so inspect the current guide rather than assuming a previous configuration still applies.
Networking can turn a local test into an external action
An agent with networking enabled can call an API, download a package, send telemetry or upload a file. That may be necessary for a legitimate task, but it also gives a prompt-injected agent a route to exfiltrate data or retrieve additional code. If the task is inspection or offline transformation, set networking to Disable. If network access is required, use an account and service credentials limited to that task, and do not place long-lived secrets in the Sandbox.

Clipboard is a data channel, not just a convenience
Clipboard redirection allows text or files copied on the host to be pasted in the Sandbox and vice versa. An agent can read content that an operator copied for an unrelated purpose, and an operator can unknowingly paste agent-generated instructions or sensitive output back into a privileged application. Disable clipboard redirection for tasks that do not need it. When it must remain enabled, copy only the specific text or file required and clear the clipboard afterward.
Mapped folders decide what survives
A .wsb file can map a host directory into the Sandbox as read-only or writable. A read-only mapping lets an agent inspect input without changing the host copy. A writable mapping is appropriate only when the task intentionally produces files in that directory; those changes remain after the Sandbox is disposed. Microsoft warns that a Sandbox application can compromise mapped files or affect the host, so do not map a password store, an entire user profile or a broad project tree for convenience. Use a narrowly scoped staging directory and copy out only the results you have reviewed.

Other sharing features still matter
Audio input, video input, printers and virtualized GPU are separate exposure decisions. Disable microphone input when voice capture is irrelevant. Keep video and printer redirection disabled unless the agent genuinely needs them. Virtualized GPU can improve graphics workloads but is unnecessary for text-oriented agents and adds another device interface to the environment.

- Create
C:AgentInputand place only the files needed for the test in it. Remove credentials, browser profiles and unrelated documents. - Save the XML as a file ending in
.wsb, such asagent-inspection.wsb. Windows Sandbox opens the file by double-clicking it. - Read every setting before launching. In particular, check that
NetworkingandClipboardRedirectionare disabled unless the task requires them, and confirm that every mapped folder is intentionally scoped. - Install or copy the agent inside the Sandbox. Prefer a package whose publisher and integrity you can verify; do not import your normal user profile or authentication tokens.
- Run the smallest possible task. Watch for attempts to access paths outside the mapped folder, launch unexpected processes, change settings or contact unapproved endpoints.
- Copy reviewed output to a clean host location, close the Sandbox and confirm deletion when Windows prompts. If the mapping was writable, inspect that host directory because its changes persist.
Protected Client mode. Microsoft’s configuration documentation says this mode runs Sandbox in an AppContainer Isolation execution environment and adds credential, device, file, network, process and window isolation. It can reduce exposure, but it is not a reason to map sensitive data or grant unnecessary network access. Validate that the applications and agent you need still work with the mode enabled.
Microsoft also documents policy controls through the WindowsSandbox Policy CSP. In managed environments, use policy to standardize whether Sandbox is available and how it may be configured; local configuration still needs a review of mapped folders and sharing settings.
How Microsoft’s agent-security model differs
Microsoft’s Windows 11 Security Book: Agentic security treats an agent as an identity that should be constrained rather than merely an application placed in a disposable desktop. The described principles include a distinct agent account, limited privileges, operational trust and an agent workspace with runtime isolation and granular permissions.

Separate identity
An agent account can prevent the agent from inheriting the operator’s personal files, browser sessions, tokens and administrative group memberships. That separation is conceptually different from launching a process in Sandbox. The page also says that agents integrating with Windows must be signed by a trusted source so malicious or poorly behaved agents can be revoked and blocked through certificate validation, antivirus and other defense-in-depth measures. Confirm how signing, account creation and revocation work for the particular agent you plan to deploy.

An agent workspace is intended to expose only approved resources at runtime. The reviewed documentation does not specify a universal path, persistence rule or permission dialog that applies to every Windows agent. Treat it as a feature to evaluate on the target build, not as a guaranteed replacement for a carefully configured .wsb file.
Cross-prompt injection changes the threat model
Microsoft identifies cross-prompt injection (XPIA) as a risk in which hostile text embedded in a document or user interface attempts to override the agent’s instructions. An agent might be told to upload a file, install malware, reveal a token or approve an unrelated change. Isolation limits the damage only if the agent also lacks the permissions and network routes needed to complete that action. Review every data source the agent can read, treat documents and web pages as untrusted instructions, and require confirmation for irreversible actions.
Containing MCP servers is a narrower problem
If your agent uses an MCP server, do not assume that Windows Sandbox or an agent workspace automatically satisfies Microsoft’s MCP requirements. Microsoft’s MCP containment guidance addresses containment of an MCP server in an agent session. Among the stated conditions are an executable server, package identity and MSIX registration, plus a valid manifest containing the required metadata.
Those requirements concern packaging, registration and access sharing for contained MCP servers; they are not a blanket isolation guarantee for every third-party agent. Inventory which servers the host application can invoke, what files or network resources each server receives and whether several servers share the same granted access. Remove unused servers and require review before registering a new one.

Edition and release checks before deployment
Microsoft’s Windows Security Features Licensing and Edition Requirements table lists Windows Sandbox and App containers for Windows Pro, Enterprise E3/E5 and Education A3/A5. This is edition coverage for those features, not proof that every agent-account, workspace or preview control uses the same licensing. Check the table and the requirements for the exact Windows build managed by your organization.
Do not confuse the generic agent-containment question with Microsoft’s Settings agent. Its documentation at Configure the agent in Windows Settings says that feature requires Windows 11 version 24H2 with KB5062660 or later, a Copilot+ PC and an enabled temporary enterprise feature-control policy, with supported languages and geography. Those conditions apply to the Settings agent described on that page, not to Windows Sandbox generally.
Choose by task, not by the word container
| Task | Practical starting point | Controls to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Open a suspicious file or test a one-off installer | Windows Sandbox. | Disable networking and clipboard unless required; use a read-only, narrowly scoped mapping; close and delete the session afterward. |
| Run an offline document transformation | Windows Sandbox with a restrictive .wsb file. |
Map only the input directory as read-only, disable audio, video, printer and GPU features that the task does not need, and review output before copying it out. |
| Let an agent modify one project directory | Sandbox can work for a bounded job if you deliberately use one writable mapping. | Expect edits in that mapping to persist; keep secrets outside it, record the exact files exposed and inspect every change. This is not evidence that the setup is equivalent to an agent workspace. |
| Operate a Windows-integrated assistant over time | Evaluate the documented agent-account and workspace controls when available for the target build. | Verify release status, identity isolation, permission prompts, persistence, policy management and revocation before granting production access. |
| Run an enterprise MCP server | Use the documented MCP containment path if the server meets its packaging requirements. | Check executable status, package identity, MSIX registration, manifest validity and the resources shared with each server. |
| Assess a newly announced MXC or similar feature | Wait for primary Microsoft documentation or treat it as experimental and unverified. | Look for supported builds, availability, policy controls, isolation claims, network behavior, file mappings and recovery procedures. A secondary article alone does not establish them. |
Common mistakes and recovery steps
Assuming disposal erases host changes
Closing Sandbox removes its temporary system and files, but a writable mapped folder is deliberately outside that disposable layer. If an agent edited or deleted files there, recover from version control or backup and review the directory before reusing it.
Leaving default networking on for convenience
If an offline task unexpectedly makes network requests, close the session, preserve relevant logs and rerun with Networking disabled. For a task that truly needs access, move it to a dedicated account and restrict credentials and endpoints rather than using a personal token.
Mapping an entire profile
A broad mapping can expose browser cookies, SSH keys, cloud-sync folders and private documents. Replace it with a staging folder containing only the required inputs. Use read-only mode unless the agent must produce files in place.
Best Value
Believing an agent obeys the system prompt
Documents, webpages and UI text can contain XPIA payloads. Add human approval for uploads, installations, account changes and destructive file operations. Keep the agent’s permissions narrow even when the environment is disposable.
Calling a preview control generally available
Microsoft’s agentic-security page describes controls that are being developed and refined. Record the Windows build, policy configuration and documentation version used in your deployment, and test updates before applying them to production agents.
Applying Windows Server container advice to Sandbox
Microsoft’s Secure Windows containers guidance states: “If the design of a container allows for an elevated (admin) process to interact with the host, then Microsoft does not consider this container to have a robust security boundary.” That sentence is Windows Server container guidance. It is a useful principle for reviewing privileged host interaction, but it is not a direct security rating of Windows Sandbox or the Windows 11 agent workspace.

What is and is not established about MXC
The report titled MXC Sandbox for Codex on Windows is dated October 9, 2026 and is a secondary source. The primary Microsoft pages cited here document Windows Sandbox, agentic-security concepts, MCP containment and licensing, but they do not verify MXC’s availability, supported Windows builds, policy controls, resource-sharing behavior or security properties. Do not make deployment decisions on the assumption that MXC is installed, supported or equivalent to either option in the table.
Bottom line for an AI-agent deployment
Choose Windows Sandbox when the job is temporary and you can make the boundary explicit: disable network and clipboard sharing when unnecessary, map only a small directory, prefer read-only access, enable additional isolation where compatible and inspect anything that persists on the host. Choose a documented agent account and workspace when the agent must operate as a continuing Windows user with granular permissions, but verify that the feature is released and supported on your build before relying on it. In both cases, least privilege, trusted software, review of external content and careful control of credentials are more important than the label attached to the container.
