Windows 11: Remove a Saved Wi‑Fi Network and Reconnect

To forget a saved Wi‑Fi network in Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, and choose Forget. Windows deletes that WLAN profile, so you must select the network again and enter its password to reconnect.

Forget a Wi‑Fi network from Settings

This is the normal, least disruptive method. It removes one saved wireless profile without uninstalling your adapter or resetting other network components.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Settings. You can press Windows + I or select Start > Settings.
  2. Select Network & internet in the left-hand navigation.
  3. Choose Wi‑Fi.
  4. Select Manage known networks. Windows lists wireless networks whose profiles are stored on the PC, including networks that are currently out of range.
  5. Find the network you want to remove. Check the exact network name (SSID), particularly if nearby networks have similar names.
  6. Select the network’s Forget button.

The profile should disappear from the known-networks list immediately. If the network is currently connected, Windows disconnects it. To use it again, open the available-network list, select the SSID, choose Connect, and type the wireless password when prompted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Wi‑Fi controls from the taskbar

The taskbar provides a quicker route to wireless controls, but the saved-profile deletion still occurs under Manage known networks.

  • 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance
  1. Select the Network, Sound, or Battery icons on the right side of the taskbar. On some devices these controls appear as one combined button.
  2. Open the Wi‑Fi quick setting. If Wi‑Fi is disabled, turn it on before looking for networks.
  3. Select Manage Wi‑Fi connections to open the Wi‑Fi settings page.
  4. Choose Manage known networks, select the saved SSID, and press Forget.

This route is useful when you are already working from the network flyout. It does not provide a separate deletion command; Windows sends you to the same known-networks list used by Settings.

Delete the profile with Command Prompt

Use the netsh method when the Forget control is missing, Settings does not respond, or you need to target a profile by its exact stored name. Open Command Prompt as administrator; a standard, non-elevated window may not have the permissions required to remove the profile.

1. List the stored Wi‑Fi profiles

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run:
netsh wlan show profiles

Read the output’s profile names carefully. The displayed name can contain spaces, punctuation, or non-English characters. Copy the exact name rather than guessing from a shortened label in the taskbar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove one exact profile

Substitute the name shown by the list command:

netsh wlan delete profile name="ProfileName"

Keep the quotation marks when the name contains spaces. A successful command reports that the profile was deleted. Run netsh wlan show profiles again if you need to confirm that it no longer appears.

3. Target a particular wireless interface when necessary

The command supports an optional interface specification. This matters on systems with more than one wireless adapter or with unusual interface naming. Use the interface form documented by Windows and make sure the interface name matches the one shown by netsh wlan show interfaces.

Important wildcard warning

Windows permits wildcard characters in the profile name. A wildcard can delete several matching profiles, not just one. Use the exact profile name for a single-network removal and inspect the command before pressing Enter. Deleting the wrong profile means you will have to enter that network’s password again.

Which removal method should you use?

Method Discoverability Exact profile targeting Administrator rights Best use
Settings High; visible controls Selects a profile from the known-networks list Usually no elevation required Normal one-network cleanup
Taskbar route High when Wi‑Fi controls are available Opens the same known-networks list Usually no elevation required Fast access while using the taskbar flyout
netsh Lower; command-line interface Yes, by the exact stored profile name Open Command Prompt as administrator Missing or broken Forget control, scripting, or precise profile selection
Network reset Easy to find but highly disruptive No; affects adapters and settings broadly Requires confirmation and restart Last-resort repair after narrower troubleshooting fails

For one unwanted saved network, start with Settings. The command-line method changes the same type of WLAN profile but gives you more control over the name. Network reset is not an alternative shortcut for forgetting one SSID; it changes the computer’s wider networking configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What “Forget” changes

Forgetting removes the saved WLAN profile. The profile contains the information Windows uses to recognize and join that network, including the saved connection configuration and credential reference. Once it is removed, Windows treats the SSID as a new network the next time it is available.

  • You will need the password again. Forgetting does not reveal, preserve, or recover the old Wi‑Fi password.
  • The wireless adapter remains installed. Forgetting does not uninstall hardware or its driver.
  • The entire network stack is not reset. Other saved networks, adapter settings, and Windows networking components are not removed by this single-profile action.
  • Other devices are unaffected. The change applies to this Windows 11 device, not to the router or to phones and computers using the same SSID.

If you do not know the password, obtain it from the network owner or administrator before forgetting the profile. After deletion, Windows cannot automatically reconnect using the removed saved credential.

Reconnect after forgetting the network

  1. Select the taskbar Network icon.
  2. Open the list of available Wi‑Fi networks.
  3. Select the SSID you just removed.
  4. Choose Connect.
  5. Enter the Wi‑Fi password exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
  6. Choose whether Windows should connect automatically when the network is in range.

If the SSID does not appear, move within range of the access point and verify that Wi‑Fi is switched on. A hidden network may require its name to be entered manually; forgetting the old profile does not make a hidden SSID broadcast.

When Windows 11 will not forget the network

Do not jump straight to a full reset. First determine whether the problem is the saved profile, the radio, the access point, or the adapter software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the basic radio state

  • Confirm that Wi‑Fi is on in the taskbar quick settings or under Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi.
  • Turn Airplane mode off. Airplane mode can suppress wireless controls even when the adapter is healthy.
  • Restart the modem and router, then wait for them to finish booting before testing the connection.

Separate a PC problem from an access-point problem

Try another frequency band if the router offers more than one, such as a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz SSID. Test the same network with another device. If every device fails, investigate the router, broadband service, or credentials rather than repeatedly deleting the Windows profile. If other devices connect normally, continue with Windows diagnostics.

Use the documented command-line diagnostics

Microsoft’s Windows 11 troubleshooting guidance recommends collecting baseline information before deleting profiles, removing adapters, or restarting services. In an elevated Command Prompt, these commands show the current state:

netsh wlan show interfaces
netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid
netsh wlan show profiles
netsh wlan show wlanreport
  • show interfaces identifies the adapter and current connection state.
  • show networks mode=bssid displays nearby access points and their radio details.
  • show profiles confirms whether the saved profile still exists.
  • show wlanreport creates a Windows wireless report that can help identify authentication, roaming, or driver events.

Save or review this evidence before making broader changes. Removing a profile or restarting components can erase context that would have explained why the connection failed.

Repair the adapter only when evidence points there

If the profile is gone but Wi‑Fi still fails, check the adapter in Device Manager. Look for warning symbols, disabled hardware, or a driver problem. Installing the correct driver supplied for the computer’s Windows 11 configuration may be necessary. A driver change is a separate repair from forgetting a network; do not assume that deleting the profile can correct a disabled or malfunctioning adapter.

Managed, school, and work PCs

Enterprise authentication and Group Policy can control which wireless profiles appear and whether users may remove them. A profile that returns after deletion, a disabled Forget button, or a network that reconnects with organizational credentials may be policy-driven.

On a managed computer, gather the interface, network, profile, and WLAN report information before changing settings. An administrator may need to inspect the applied wireless policy, authentication method, WLAN AutoConfig service state, driver events, and security logs. Repeatedly deleting a policy-controlled profile can create a temporary symptom without changing the rule that recreates it.

The same consideration applies to devices using certificate-based or other enterprise authentication. You may not have a reusable Wi‑Fi password to type after forgetting the profile; the organization may have to re-provision the connection.

Use Network reset only as a last resort

Microsoft explicitly says, “Using network reset should be the last step you try.” It is substantially broader than deleting one saved Wi‑Fi profile.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Network & internet.
  3. Choose Advanced network settings.
  4. Select Network reset.
  5. Choose Reset now and confirm. Windows will restart the PC.

During a network reset, Windows removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after the restart. You may need to configure VPN clients again or recreate Hyper‑V virtual switches. Known networks can also be changed to a Public network profile, which may alter discovery and sharing behavior.

  • Dual-band Connection: The AX900 USB WiFi adapter under the AX standard, the 5G band rate can reach 600Mbps, and the 2.4G band can reach 286Mbps. Note: Use WiFi 6 Router to achieve AX900 speed
  • Built-in Drivers for Windows 10/11: The WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC just supports Windows 10/11 which CPU architecture is X86/X64, supports CD-free installation, no need to download drivers, saving time and worry. Please note this Adapter doesn't support MacOS/Linux/Win 8, 8.1, 7, XP
  • Receive & Transmit Two in One: A desktop computer can connect to the WiFi wireless Internet by connecting it to a wireless network card. A networked computer can connect to the network card to transmit WiFi and share it with other devices
  • Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft

Because of those side effects, use reset only after the profile-specific Settings or netsh removal, radio checks, router testing, diagnostics, and appropriate driver work have failed. Record any custom adapter, VPN, virtual-switch, proxy, or sharing settings first so you can restore them afterward.

A practical decision checklist

  • You only want to remove one saved SSID: use Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks > Forget.
  • You are already in the taskbar flyout: open Manage Wi‑Fi connections, then continue to Manage known networks.
  • The graphical control is unavailable or unresponsive: run netsh wlan show profiles, then delete the exact name with netsh wlan delete profile name="ProfileName" from an administrator Command Prompt.
  • The profile is gone but the connection still fails: check Wi‑Fi and Airplane mode, restart the router, test another band or device, collect WLAN diagnostics, and inspect the adapter driver.
  • The device is managed: involve the administrator before removing policy-controlled profiles or changing authentication settings.
  • Several network components are broken: consider Network reset only after documenting settings and understanding its adapter, VPN, virtual-switch, and network-profile effects.

Common situations after profile removal

The network immediately reappears in the list

A network being visible in the available-network list does not mean its profile still exists. Nearby SSIDs are broadcast by access points and can appear whether or not Windows has saved them. Check Manage known networks or run netsh wlan show profiles to determine whether the profile was actually removed.

Windows reconnects without asking for a password

Verify that you removed the intended SSID and that another profile with a similar name was not selected. On a managed PC, policy may have recreated the profile. The command-line profile list can distinguish the exact stored name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You forgot the password after choosing Forget

The password is not recoverable from the deleted profile through the Forget workflow. Ask the network owner, check the router’s administration information if you are authorized to do so, or obtain the organization’s current credentials. Do not use Network reset to solve a missing password; reset does not reveal it.

The Forget button is missing

Use the exact netsh sequence from an elevated Command Prompt. If the profile is controlled by policy, the command may be restricted or the profile may return; that requires administrative intervention rather than repeated deletion attempts.
