Windows 11 Remote Control: Set Up Quick Assist, Remote Assistance, or Remote Desktop

Windows 11 has three different ways to let another person view or control a PC. Choose Quick Assist for a one-time help session, Windows Remote Assistance for an invitation to a trusted helper, or Remote Desktop for continuing access to a Windows 11 PC as though you were sitting in front of it. Quick Assist and Remote Assistance keep someone at the PC involved in approving the session; Remote Desktop is enabled on the host and then accessed from another device.

The instructions below show the exact Windows 11 paths, edition requirements, approval steps, and safety checks for each option.

Which Windows 11 remote-control option should you use?

Option Best for Does someone at the PC approve the session? Host requirement How the connection starts
Quick Assist One-time help from a family member, friend, or other trusted person Yes. The recipient allows the connection and screen sharing, then separately approves full control. Windows 11; Quick Assist may need to be installed from Microsoft Store A six-digit code generated by the helper
Windows Remote Assistance An invitation-based support session with a trusted helper Yes. The user creates and accepts an invitation. Windows 11 with Remote Assistance enabled in the Remote tab An invitation, with Easy Connect or another invitation route shown when available
Remote Desktop Continuing access to a PC from another computer, phone, or tablet No separate approval is required for each connection after setup; the connecting user signs in. The target PC must run Windows 11 Pro The target PC name and a user account sign-in

If you only need somebody to guide you through a problem today, start with Quick Assist. If you want to reach your own PC later without another person sitting there to approve access, use Remote Desktop and check the Pro requirement first.

Requirements and permissions at a glance

These features solve different problems, so the most important requirement is choosing the right workflow before changing a setting.

#1 Best Overall
Windows 11 Pro Upgrade, from Windows 11 Home (Digital Download)
  • Instantly productive. Simpler, more intuitive UI and effortless navigation. New features like snap layouts help you manage multiple tasks with ease.
  • Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
  • Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
  • Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.
  • Quick Assist: both people use the Windows app. The helper generates a six-digit code, the recipient enters it, and the recipient approves screen sharing. Full control is a second approval.
  • Windows Remote Assistance: the person at the PC first enables invitations from the Remote tab, then creates an invitation for a trusted helper. Windows may present Easy Connect or another invitation route depending on the situation.
  • Remote Desktop: the controlled, or host, computer must run Windows 11 Pro. The client can be another Windows edition or a supported macOS, iOS, or Android device. After setup, the client uses the host PC name and an accepted account sign-in.

No special physical hardware is required by these documented workflows. Quick Assist might need a Microsoft Store installation, and a work or school administrator can block that installation or other remote features. Network reachability, VPN access, firewalls, account permissions, and other deployment choices are environment-specific rather than universal steps in the consumer setup.

How to use Quick Assist for a one-time support session

Quick Assist is the simplest choice when the person receiving help is present and can approve what the helper does. Microsoft’s current instructions are documented in its Quick Assist support guide.

1. Install or open Quick Assist

  1. On both Windows 11 PCs, open Start and search for Quick Assist. You can also press Ctrl + Windows logo key + Q.
  2. If the app is not installed, install Quick Assist from Microsoft Store, then open it.
  3. Quick Assist requires WebView2. It is normally already present with Windows 11 or Microsoft Edge. If it is missing, Quick Assist installs it when the app opens.

On a work- or school-managed PC, an organization may block Microsoft Store installation. If installation is unavailable, contact the organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.

2. Have the helper generate a code

  1. The helper opens Quick Assist and selects Help someone.
  2. Quick Assist displays a six-digit security code. The helper sends that code to the person who needs help using a channel they already trust.

Do not read a code to an unsolicited caller or send it to someone who contacted you unexpectedly. A code is intended for the support session you chose to start.

3. Have the recipient accept screen sharing

  1. The recipient opens Quick Assist and enters the helper’s six-digit code.
  2. After submitting the code, the recipient allows the connection and screen sharing.
  3. The helper can now see the recipient’s screen and use the available assistance tools.

Quick Assist can provide pointer assistance, annotations, and chat. Seeing the screen is not the same as having unrestricted control; the recipient still decides whether to grant control.

4. Approve or deny full control

  1. When the helper needs to operate the PC, the helper selects Request control.
  2. The recipient receives a separate approval request and must allow it.
  3. If the request is unexpected or the helper’s task is complete, the recipient can deny it.

Because screen sharing and full control have separate approvals, you can let somebody point out a setting without handing over the mouse and keyboard.

5. End the session and withdraw control

  • Select Leave to end the Quick Assist session.
  • If you granted control and want to stop it before ending the session, select Cancel control.
  • Close the app after confirming that the helper no longer has access.

Quick Assist safety rules

Microsoft warns about technical-support scams. Allow a Quick Assist connection only when you initiated the interaction with a person or organization you intended to contact. Microsoft specifically advises caution with anyone who calls, emails, or displays a pop-up claiming that your PC has a problem. If you are dealing with Microsoft support, start the interaction by contacting Microsoft directly rather than accepting an unsolicited request.

Why a browser page may be the wrong Quick Assist option

The browser version of Quick Assist is intended for interactions with verified Microsoft support agents. It is not the normal friend-to-friend workflow described above. For help from a family member, colleague, or technician you already trust, use the Windows Quick Assist app and its six-digit code.

How to enable Windows Remote Assistance and send an invitation

Windows Remote Assistance is an invitation-based feature. It is useful when you want to invite a particular trusted person rather than use Quick Assist’s short code. Microsoft describes the enablement and invitation process in its Remote Assistance support article.

1. Turn on Remote Assistance in Windows 11

  1. Search Windows for remote assistance.
  2. Select Allow RemoteAssistance invitations to be sent from this computer.
  3. In the Remote tab, select Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer.
  4. Select OK to save the setting.

The wording uses “RemoteAssistance” as one word in the Windows control-panel label. Choose the result that opens the Remote Assistance settings, not a general web search result.

2. Create an invitation for your helper

  1. Search Windows for Remote Assistance.
  2. Select the option to request help or invite someone you trust.
  3. Follow the prompts to create and send the invitation.

Depending on whether the feature has been used before and whether the contact is eligible for the available connection method, the interface may offer Easy Connect or an invitation route. Follow the option presented by Windows rather than assuming both paths will appear on every PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Keep the invitation limited to the intended person

Remote Assistance is designed for a trusted helper. Treat the invitation details as access information: send them only to the person you selected, and end the assistance session when the work is finished. If the option is unavailable on a managed computer, ask the administrator whether organizational policy controls Remote Assistance.

How to enable Remote Desktop on Windows 11

Remote Desktop is for accessing a PC from another device as if you were sitting at the target computer. It is the right choice for your own workstation, a home PC you need to reach while away, or another machine that must remain available without somebody approving every session. Microsoft’s current setup and client guidance is in its Remote Desktop support article.

Check the Windows 11 edition before changing settings

The target, or host, PC must run Windows 11 Pro. A device running Windows 11 Home cannot serve as the Remote Desktop host through this documented setup. The device you connect from can use any Windows edition or another supported operating system.

This edition requirement applies to the PC being controlled, not necessarily to the laptop, desktop, phone, or tablet used as the client. If your target PC is not running Pro, use Quick Assist or Remote Assistance for a session that a person at the PC can approve, or consult your organization about its supported remote-access method.

1. Turn on Remote Desktop on the target PC

  1. On the PC you want to control, open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Remote Desktop.
  3. Turn on Remote Desktop.
  4. Confirm the change when Windows asks.
  5. Note the displayed PC name. You will enter this name from the connecting device.

Write down the PC name exactly as Windows displays it. The name identifies the target in the connection step; it is different from the six-digit code used by Quick Assist.

2. Connect from another Windows PC

  1. On the client Windows device, open Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Enter the target PC’s name.
  3. Select Connect.
  4. Sign in with an account accepted by the target PC.

Remote Desktop presents the target computer’s desktop through the client device. Unlike Quick Assist, there is no Quick Assist-style “Request control” prompt for each connection after Remote Desktop has been enabled; access is governed by the host settings and the account sign-in.

3. Connect from macOS, iPhone, iPad, or Android

Microsoft directs macOS and iOS users to Windows App. Android users are directed to the Remote Desktop app. Install the client appropriate for the connecting device, enter the Windows 11 host PC name, and sign in when prompted. App names and availability can vary by platform, so use Microsoft’s current Remote Desktop instructions for the supported client download and connection details.

Network and administrator considerations

The Settings toggle and PC name are the consumer setup steps; they do not by themselves establish every network path needed in a business, school, or complex home deployment. Firewalls, VPNs, account permissions, addressability, and organizational policies can affect whether a client can reach the host. Microsoft’s general setup page does not make one universal networking configuration for every environment. If the PC belongs to an employer or school, ask IT for the approved remote-access design instead of changing network controls yourself.

Remote control security checklist

  • Start the interaction yourself. A caller who says your PC is infected is not a reason to grant access.
  • Verify the helper’s identity. Use a person or support channel you already trust.
  • Read every approval prompt. In Quick Assist, screen sharing and full control are separate decisions.
  • Watch the session. Do not leave a helper alone with an unlocked PC unless that is an intentional, trusted arrangement.
  • Stop access when finished. Use Cancel control or Leave in Quick Assist, and close an assistance session when the task ends.
  • Use the least powerful option. Choose screen sharing or guidance when full control is unnecessary.
  • Respect managed-device policy. A work or school administrator may block Store installation or control remote features.

Troubleshooting the three Windows 11 methods

Quick Assist is missing

Search Start for Quick Assist first. If it is not installed, install it from Microsoft Store. If Store access is blocked on a managed PC, the restriction may be intentional; contact IT. WebView2 should normally be present on Windows 11 or with Microsoft Edge, and Quick Assist attempts to install it when needed.

The helper can see the screen but cannot control it

That is expected until the recipient approves Request control. Ask the helper to send the request, then approve it only if you want that person to operate the PC. If you no longer want control enabled, select Cancel control.

You are unsure whether a browser session is legitimate

The browser version is for verified Microsoft support-agent interactions. For ordinary help from someone you know, stop and use the Windows Quick Assist app with its six-digit code instead.

Remote Assistance settings cannot be found

Search for remote assistance and choose Allow RemoteAssistance invitations to be sent from this computer. Then use the Remote tab to select Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer. If a managed computer prevents the change, ask the administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Desktop cannot be enabled

First verify that the target PC is running Windows 11 Pro. Remote Desktop host access requires Pro. If the edition is correct but the device is managed, networked through an organization, or governed by policy, obtain the approved configuration from IT.

The client cannot find the host PC

Recheck the PC name copied from Settings > System > Remote Desktop, confirm that Remote Desktop remains turned on, and verify the network or VPN arrangement required by your environment. For a work or school PC, the administrator may need to provide the correct connection method.

The wrong person received the code or invitation

Do not continue the session. In Quick Assist, refuse the connection or any control request and select Leave if a session has already opened. For Remote Assistance, do not forward the invitation details; create a new invitation for the intended helper and ask the administrator if policy requires additional steps.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Need help only once, with the user present? Use Quick Assist. It provides a six-digit code, screen sharing, optional control, and a clear Leave action.
  2. Need an invitation-based session with a trusted helper? Enable Windows Remote Assistance from the Remote tab, then create the invitation.
  3. Need to return to the PC later without someone approving the session? Use Remote Desktop, provided the target PC runs Windows 11 Pro and your network and account setup support the connection.
  4. Is the PC managed by an employer or school? Stop at the organization’s policy boundary and ask IT which method it supports.

What to check before you connect

Confirm which machine is the host and which is the client. For Quick Assist, the helper is the person who selects Help someone and receives the code; the recipient is the person who enters it and approves sharing. For Remote Desktop, the host is the Windows 11 Pro PC whose name you record, while the client is the device running Remote Desktop Connection, Windows App, or the Android Remote Desktop app.

Also decide whether seeing the screen is enough. Quick Assist’s pointer, annotation, and chat tools can support guided troubleshooting without full control. If an operation requires the helper to use the mouse or keyboard, wait for the separate Request control prompt and approve it deliberately. Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop have different invitation and sign-in flows, so do not send a Quick Assist code when the other person is expecting a Remote Assistance invitation or a host PC name.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I let someone control my Windows 11 PC remotely?

For a one-time session, open Quick Assist, have the helper select Help someone and send the six-digit code, then enter the code and allow screen sharing. The helper must separately select Request control, and you must approve that request.

Does Windows 11 Home support Remote Desktop hosting?

The documented Remote Desktop setup requires Windows 11 Pro on the target PC. Windows 11 Home cannot serve as the host through this setup. Use Quick Assist or Windows Remote Assistance when someone at the PC can approve a session.

Do I need to install Quick Assist?

Search Start for Quick Assist first. If it is absent, install it from Microsoft Store. WebView2 is required and is normally present with Windows 11 or Microsoft Edge; Quick Assist attempts to install it if needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Quick Assist without giving full control?

Yes. The recipient first approves the connection and screen sharing. Full control is a separate Request control approval, so you can use the helper’s pointer, annotation, or chat assistance without granting mouse and keyboard control.

What is the difference between Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop?

Remote Assistance uses an invitation and keeps the person at the PC involved in approving the support session. Remote Desktop is intended for continuing access: after it is enabled on a Windows 11 Pro host, the client connects with the PC name and an accepted account sign-in.

Which app connects to Remote Desktop from a phone or Mac?

Microsoft directs macOS and iOS users to Windows App and Android users to the Remote Desktop app. Enter the Windows 11 host PC name and sign in when prompted.

Why can’t my work PC install Quick Assist?

A work or school administrator may block Microsoft Store installation or other remote features. Do not bypass the policy; contact IT for the approved support method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop a Quick Assist session?

Select Leave to end the session. If full control is active and you want to withdraw it first, select Cancel control, then leave the session.

The Bottom Line

Choose Quick Assist for a supervised, one-time support session, Windows Remote Assistance for a trusted invitation, and Remote Desktop for recurring access to a Windows 11 Pro PC. Verify the host edition, use the exact code, invitation, or PC name required by the chosen method, approve only the access you intend to grant, and end the session when the work is complete.
