Microsoft is distributing Windows 11 Release Preview update KB5127936 on October 16, 2026. It advances Windows 11 version 25H2 to build 26200.9807 and version 26H2 to build 26300.9807. The reported changes are platform reliability work for Windows Spotlight on the lock screen and a fix for an enterprise policy that could not be configured through Microsoft Intune.
What KB5127936 changes
KB5127936 is a Release Preview servicing update rather than a broad, final-production feature release. Its reported scope is narrow but relevant to two groups: people seeing unreliable Windows Spotlight behavior on the lock screen, and administrators managing Remote Desktop publisher certificates with Intune.

Windows Spotlight reliability
The update makes underlying platform changes intended to improve Windows Spotlight reliability on the lock screen. That wording describes a reliability improvement, not a guaranteed redesign or a promise that every Spotlight failure disappears. Spotlight availability and behavior can still vary as Microsoft stages changes.
Intune trusted RDP publisher policy
KB5127936 addresses an issue that prevented the Intune policy named “Specify thumbprints of certificates representing trusted .rdp publishers.” from being configured. This matters to organizations that use certificate thumbprints to control which Remote Desktop publisher certificates are trusted. The fix targets policy configuration; it does not by itself document a change to an organization’s certificate lifecycle or RDP deployment.

Builds included in the update
| Windows 11 version | Build after KB5127936 | Audience |
|---|---|---|
| 25H2 | 26200.9807 | Devices running the 25H2 Release Preview build line |
| 26H2 | 26300.9807 | Devices running the 26H2 Release Preview build line |
The build numbers are tied to their respective version lines: 25H2 uses the 26200 series, while 26H2 uses the 26300 series. Installing the package does not convert a 25H2 installation into 26H2, or vice versa.
Is KB5127936 safe to install?
For a test machine or an organization that intentionally participates in Windows 11 Release Preview, the update is a normal Windows servicing delivery. It is still preview software, however. Microsoft describes Release Preview servicing as using gradual and normal rollout phases, so the update or an individual change may not appear on every enrolled device at the same time. Preview behavior can also change before a feature reaches broad availability.

Do not treat this package as a mandatory emergency security update based on the reported change list. If a business depends on a stable production image, validate it in a pilot ring first, especially when the device is used for remote access or managed by Intune.

- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Open Windows Insider Program and confirm that the device is enrolled in the Release Preview channel. Enrollment may require an eligible Microsoft account and organizational approval on managed PCs.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install the update when it is offered, then verify the resulting build in Settings > System > About or by running
winver.
If the package is not offered immediately, that can be consistent with Microsoft’s staged rollout. Check that the device is actually on the 25H2 or 26H2 Release Preview servicing path and that organizational update policies are not deferring preview content.
What the update does not establish
- It does not establish a new Windows feature or a major user-interface change.
- It does not guarantee that every Windows Spotlight problem is resolved.
- It does not mean the Intune trusted RDP publisher policy is available on unsupported Windows editions or management configurations.
- It does not provide a published performance statistic or a named-person statement about the update.
Release Preview versus a normal cumulative update
| Aspect | KB5127936 Release Preview | Typical production cumulative update |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Windows 11 25H2 build 26200.9807 and 26H2 build 26300.9807 | Specific production versions and servicing branches |
| Eligibility | Device enrolled in Release Preview | Normally offered through standard Windows Update servicing |
| Rollout | Gradual and normal phases; timing can differ by device | Broad servicing schedule, still subject to safeguards |
| Reported purpose | Spotlight reliability and an Intune policy-configuration fix | Varies by month and release |
| Risk posture | Preview validation is appropriate before wide deployment | Generally intended for production servicing after release |
Bottom line for users and administrators
KB5127936 is a targeted Release Preview update for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2. Install it if you are already testing Release Preview and need the Spotlight reliability work or the Intune trusted-RDP-publisher policy fix. Otherwise, waiting for the corresponding production servicing release avoids preview-channel variables and staged-availability uncertainty.
