Windows 11 Recycle Bin Delete Confirmation: Turn the Prompt On or Off

To control the confirmation prompt in Windows 11, right-click the Recycle Bin on the desktop, choose Properties, and select or clear Display delete confirmation dialog. Select the box, choose Apply, then OK to ask before ordinary File Explorer deletes. Clear it to return to silent moves to the Recycle Bin. This setting does not protect permanent-delete actions, every removable or network location, or files governed by a cloud-storage provider.

What the Delete Confirmation setting actually controls

The checkbox controls whether Windows asks for confirmation when File Explorer deletes an item in a way that moves it to the Windows Recycle Bin. With the box selected, a confirmation dialog appears before the move. With it cleared, File Explorer performs the move without that dialog.

The setting is not a universal deletion safeguard. It does not change how the Recycle Bin stores items, increase the Recycle Bin size, recover an item that has already been removed, or turn a permanent deletion into a recoverable one. It also does not replace rules imposed by a cloud-storage application, a network share, or removable media. Think of it as a user-interface confirmation for applicable local File Explorer operations.

Enable the prompt from Recycle Bin Properties

Restore the desktop icon if Recycle Bin is hidden

The Properties command is on the Recycle Bin icon, so restore that icon first if it is not visible.

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu or with Windows key + I.
  2. Open Personalization, then Themes.
  3. Select Desktop icon settings.
  4. Check Recycle Bin, select Apply, and then OK.

The icon should now appear on the desktop. Desktop icon visibility is separate from whether the confirmation prompt is enabled.

Turn confirmation on

  1. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon and choose Properties.
  2. Under the selected Recycle Bin location, check Display delete confirmation dialog.
  3. Select Apply, then OK.
  4. Test the change with a disposable file in a local folder: select the file, press Delete, and verify that Windows asks for confirmation before moving it to the Recycle Bin.

The change takes effect for the current Windows user and applies to the ordinary File Explorer delete operation covered by the setting. It does not retroactively prompt for files that were already deleted.

Disable the prompt when you want silent deletes

  1. Right-click Recycle Bin on the desktop and select Properties.
  2. Clear Display delete confirmation dialog.
  3. Choose Apply, then OK.

After the box is cleared, pressing Delete in File Explorer normally moves an eligible item to the Recycle Bin without asking. You can still open the Recycle Bin and restore an item or empty it separately. Disabling the dialog does not automatically empty the bin.

Which delete operations show the prompt?

Use the following boundaries when deciding whether the checkbox should have an effect.

Operation or location Expected behavior Why
Deleting a local file in File Explorer with Delete Uses the checkbox setting The item is ordinarily moved to the Windows Recycle Bin.
Moving a local folder to the Recycle Bin through File Explorer Uses the checkbox setting The policy covers a file being deleted or moved to the Recycle Bin by the user; folders follow the same ordinary File Explorer workflow.
Permanent-delete action May bypass the prompt and the Recycle Bin A confirmation for a Recycle Bin move cannot make an operation that bypasses the bin recoverable.
Some removable or network locations May follow different behavior Those locations do not always use the local Windows Recycle Bin.
Online-only or provider-managed cloud files May use the provider’s own deletion rules The storage provider can intercept deletion before Windows handles it as a local Recycle Bin move.

If you are testing, use a small local file rather than an online-only document, a network share, or removable storage. That isolates the Windows setting from storage-provider behavior.

Manage the prompt on company or school PCs

Administrators can enforce the same behavior with the ConfirmFileDelete user policy. This is useful when several Windows 11 accounts need a consistent setting or when users should not change it themselves.

Group Policy path

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor or the organization’s policy-management console.
  2. Go to User Configuration > Windows Components > File Explorer.
  3. Open Display confirmation dialog when deleting files.
  4. Choose Enabled to display a confirmation dialog when the user deletes a file or moves it to the Recycle Bin.
  5. Choose Disabled or leave the policy Not configured to use the default no-dialog behavior documented by Microsoft.
  6. Apply the policy and have the user sign in again, or refresh policy according to the organization’s normal procedure.

The policy is user-scoped, so it follows the user configuration rather than being a single machine-wide preference. A domain, MDM, or other management layer can reapply its chosen value after a local change.

Set ConfirmFileDelete directly in the registry

The registry value provides a direct current-user control when a policy-management workflow is not available. It changes the same setting exposed by Recycle Bin Properties, so use it only when you understand the effect.

  1. Sign in to the Windows account whose behavior you want to change.
  2. Press Windows key + R, type regedit, and open Registry Editor.
  3. Before editing, back up the relevant key with Registry Editor’s File > Export command.
  4. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. Create the Explorer key under Policies if it is not present.
  5. Create or edit a DWORD (32-bit) Value named ConfirmFileDelete.
  6. Set its value data to 1 to enable confirmation or 0 to disable it.
  7. Close Registry Editor and test with a disposable local file. If the shell does not reflect the change immediately, sign out and back in before testing again.

The relevant hive is HKEY_CURRENT_USER because the policy is user-scoped. Editing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE instead does not set this documented user policy. Do not alter registry policy values on an employer- or school-managed PC without administrator approval; management software may overwrite the value or treat the change as a policy violation.

Choose the right control surface

Situation Best method Scope and trade-off
One person wants a visible, reversible change Recycle Bin > Properties Fastest method; affects that user’s ordinary File Explorer deletes.
An administrator needs the same rule for many users ConfirmFileDelete Group Policy or MDM Central control; local users may be unable to override it.
A scripted or profile-based setup must apply a user preference Current-user registry value Useful for deployment, but a wrong hive or value has no effect and registry mistakes can damage other settings.
Files are online-only, on a share, or on removable media Storage-provider or location-specific settings The Windows checkbox may not govern the deletion path.

Troubleshoot a prompt that does not appear

Confirm that the checkbox is selected

Reopen Recycle Bin Properties and verify that Display delete confirmation dialog remains checked. Select Apply even if the box already looks correct, then test again with a local file. If the box keeps clearing itself, a domain policy, MDM profile, or another user-context configuration may be enforcing the opposite value; ask the device administrator to check ConfirmFileDelete.

Test a local File Explorer delete

Use a file stored on the computer’s local drive and delete it from File Explorer with the standard Delete command. Do not use a cloud placeholder, network path, USB device, or an application’s own delete button for the first test. Those paths can have different retention and confirmation rules.

Check cloud-storage status

Online-only files may be represented in File Explorer but still be controlled by the synchronization provider. Microsoft Community troubleshooting advises checking the provider’s deletion behavior and, where appropriate, choosing Always keep on this device so a local copy participates in normal Windows handling. This can change storage use and synchronization state, so apply it only when keeping a local copy is acceptable.

Recognize permanent deletion

If an operation bypasses the Recycle Bin, this dialog is not designed to intercept it. Stop and use the ordinary File Explorer delete command when you need the item to remain recoverable in the bin. The confirmation preference cannot add Recycle Bin protection after an operation has already bypassed it.

Check the account and policy context

Because the setting is user-scoped, changing it while signed in as one account does not change another account’s behavior. On a managed PC, check the effective user policy rather than relying only on a local registry edit. The documented policy supports Windows 11 version 21H2 and later on the listed Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions.

Practical ways to use the setting safely

  • Enable the prompt on accounts that routinely handle irreplaceable documents or shared folders.
  • Leave it disabled for a high-volume cleanup workflow only when users understand that the first recovery point is still the Recycle Bin, not the dialog itself.
  • For demonstrations or support calls, test with a newly created text file so no important data is at risk.
  • Keep the Recycle Bin available even when the dialog is disabled; silent movement to the bin is still different from emptying it.
  • Document any organization-wide policy so users know whether a local checkbox change will persist.

Quick verification checklist

  1. The Recycle Bin icon is visible on the desktop, or you have restored it through Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings.
  2. Display delete confirmation dialog is selected for an enabled prompt or cleared for silent behavior.
  3. You clicked Apply and OK in Recycle Bin Properties.
  4. Your test file is local and is being deleted through ordinary File Explorer.
  5. You are not using a permanent-delete action or a location with provider-specific rules.
  6. On a managed PC, the effective ConfirmFileDelete policy agrees with the result you expect.

What to remember

The desktop Properties dialog is the quickest solution: check the box to ask before eligible File Explorer deletes, or clear it to stop asking. Administrators can manage the same user-scoped behavior with ConfirmFileDelete, and a current-user registry value of 1 or 0 mirrors the enabled or disabled state. Neither method makes permanent deletes, every external location, or every cloud-managed file use the Windows Recycle Bin.
