You can reduce optional data sharing and unnecessary app access in Windows 11 without disabling core services. Start with the documented controls in Settings: review diagnostic data, personalization and advertising settings, app permissions, and location. These settings have limits—especially for desktop apps—so change them selectively and check what a feature depends on before switching it off.
1. Review diagnostic data
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. If you cannot find the page, search Settings for “Diagnostics & feedback”; labels and routes can change after Windows updates.
Windows distinguishes required diagnostic data from optional diagnostic data. Microsoft says required data supports security, updates, troubleshooting, and product improvement. Optional data can include additional details such as app activity and device health. If you want to share less, turn off optional diagnostic data if the control is available; do not assume required data can always be disabled. Deleting diagnostic data is not the same as stopping future collection: Microsoft says deletion does not prevent new diagnostic data from being sent, remove data associated with a Microsoft account, or necessarily remove copies held by an organization.

2. Limit personalization and advertising ID use
On current installations, check Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. If you do not see that page, search Settings for “advertising ID” or look under General, a label used on older installations. Depending on the Windows version, related controls may include website access to your language list and personalization in Start and Search. Microsoft Support: Windows 11 privacy settings.
Turning off the advertising ID limits use of that Windows identifier by apps that use it; it does not reduce the number of ads you see or stop every form of interest-based advertising. Treat it as a narrow personalization choice, not an ad blocker. Microsoft Support: Choose your privacy settings.

3. Audit app permissions by capability
In Settings > Privacy & security, open sensitive capability pages such as Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts, and Calendar. Review access app by app, turning off permission where an app has no need for it and keeping it where a feature depends on it. These controls are not a universal privacy sandbox. They primarily cover supported Store apps; traditional desktop programs may not appear in the lists or may have separate privacy controls. 4. Choose location settings with their dependencies in mind
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location and use per-app controls where practical. Turning off location for the device can affect maps and other location-aware features, automatic time zone, and Find my device. Leaving device location on does not automatically grant every supported app access; review the app-level choices as well. Microsoft Support: Location service and privacy.
Windows may estimate location using a combination of GPS, nearby wireless networks, cell towers, IP address, or a default location, depending on the device. The normal app list does not cover every desktop program, and some third-party apps may estimate location from other signals. Use the Windows controls to manage supported access, then check desktop apps individually.

5. Treat unavailable controls as a possible policy decision
If a setting is missing, greyed out, or marked as managed by your organization, it may be controlled by workplace or school policy rather than malfunctioning. Contact the IT administrator instead of trying to override the policy. 6. Avoid blanket “debloat” changes
Do not disable unfamiliar Windows services or run a broad privacy script just because it promises to harden Windows. The documented controls above let you make specific choices and see their trade-offs; safety of broad service-disabling scripts or third-party debloat tools is not established for every Windows 11 configuration. If you need a change beyond these settings, verify what it affects for your particular device before applying it.
