For a Windows 11 PC, an Android phone is the practical choice. Microsoft’s Phone Link connects selected Android phones to Windows so you can handle messages, notifications, calls, recent photos and, on supported models, mirrored phone apps from the PC. It does not make the phone a Windows 11 handset, install Android apps in Windows, or provide a current Windows 11 mobile operating system. If you need a phone that works well with a Windows computer for both work and personal use, choose Android after checking the exact model’s Phone Link eligibility.

The short answer

There is no current, supported “Windows 11 phone” platform to compare with Android. The useful comparison is a Windows 11 PC paired with an Android smartphone versus an Android smartphone used without that integration. Microsoft’s current connection path is Phone Link, which complements an Android phone rather than replacing its operating system.

That makes Android the sensible default for Windows users, but not every Android handset offers every Phone Link feature. Verify compatibility before buying.

What a “Windows 11 phone” would mean—and what exists today

Windows 11 is a PC operating system

Windows 11 is not offered as a general-purpose phone operating system. A phone advertised as “Windows 11 compatible” normally means it can connect to a Windows 11 computer, not that it runs Windows 11 as its handset software. Phone Link is Microsoft’s PC-to-phone bridge: it exposes selected phone functions in Windows while the Android device remains the place where the apps and mobile operating system run.

The former Windows phone platform is no longer supported

Microsoft lists January 14, 2020 as the end-of-support date for Windows 10 Mobile. That legacy platform should not be presented as a current alternative to Android. Unsupported software can lack security updates, dependable app availability and working cloud services, so it is unsuitable as a primary work phone.

For the current support position, see Microsoft’s explanation of unsupported Windows versions at Microsoft Support.

How Phone Link connects an Android phone to Windows 11

Phone Link has two parts: the Phone Link app on the Windows PC and Microsoft’s Link to Windows component on the Android phone. They communicate over Wi-Fi and use your Microsoft account when requested during setup. The connection lets Windows display selected information from the phone; it does not copy the whole Android system into Windows.

Features commonly available

  • Messages: Read and send supported text messages from the PC.
  • Notifications: See selected phone notifications in Windows and, depending on settings, respond to them.
  • Calls: Place and receive calls through the PC when the phone and permissions support the feature.
  • Recent photos: Access recent phone pictures from Windows without manually emailing them to yourself.
  • Phone apps: Open mirrored Android apps on the PC when the handset, software and market support the experience.

Microsoft notes that the exact feature set depends on the phone and the experience enabled for it. The general requirements and setup flow are documented at Phone Link requirements and setup.

Requirement Microsoft’s stated baseline Why it matters
Android version Android 10 or later for the general Phone Link connection Older Android versions may not meet the current baseline.
Windows computer Windows 11, or Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later The PC must be on a supported update level.
Network Wi-Fi on both the phone and PC The devices need a network path for synchronization and mirroring.
Account The same Microsoft account may be requested during setup Using different accounts can prevent pairing or limit features.
Advanced experiences Exact phone, software, market and carrier support Phone screen, apps and RCS have separate eligibility rules.

Microsoft maintains separate eligibility information for Phone Link experiences at Supported devices for Phone Link experiences. Device lists and regional support can change, so check that page for the precise model and the feature you want.

Phone Link setup: step by step

  1. Update both devices. Install current Windows updates on the PC and update Android system components and Link to Windows on the phone.
  2. Confirm the baseline. Make sure the phone runs Android 10 or later, the PC runs Windows 11 (or the specified updated Windows 10 release), and both devices are connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Open Phone Link on Windows. Use the Start menu to launch Phone Link. Choose Android when asked which type of phone you are connecting.
  4. Start pairing. The PC displays a QR code or pairing instructions. On the phone, open Link to Windows and follow the prompts to scan or enter the code.
  5. Use the same Microsoft account if requested. Sign in with the account shown by the setup flow; account mismatches can block the connection.
  6. Approve permissions. Allow the requested access for notifications, contacts, calls, messages and photos only if you want those functions. Android may also ask you to exempt Link to Windows from battery optimization so it can stay connected.
  7. Test the basics first. Send a test message, make a test call and open Recent photos. Then check whether Apps or Phone screen appears for your particular handset.
  8. Review privacy settings. In Phone Link, disable categories you do not want displayed on a shared or office PC. On Android, revoke individual permissions if you later stop using a feature.

A successful pairing does not guarantee that every tab will appear. Phone Link shows only the experiences Microsoft and the phone manufacturer support for that combination.

Why advanced features are not universal

Phone screen and app mirroring

Phone screen and the Apps experience are restricted to selected devices and markets. A compatible phone may show a live or interactive view in Windows, but the underlying app still runs on the handset. Windows is receiving a view and input path; it is not installing an Android package on the PC.

Microsoft says the multiple-app experience requires Android 11 and a compatible device. On many other Android phones, Phone Link can open one mirrored app at a time. If you expect to work with several mobile apps side by side, verify that the exact model is listed for that capability before purchase.

RCS messaging

Rich Communication Services support has additional requirements beyond ordinary message synchronization. Microsoft identifies dependencies that can include the phone, the default messaging app, country and carrier. A handset that supports RCS in its own messaging app may not expose RCS conversations through Phone Link in your market. Treat RCS as a feature to verify, not a guaranteed result of buying any Android phone.

A current known app issue

Microsoft’s help article reports a known issue that can prevent mobile Microsoft Office apps from opening from Recent Apps in Phone Link. If that happens, open the app directly on the phone or use the full Windows version of the application instead. Check the latest guidance in Use apps from your Android device on your PC.

What the setup is useful for at work

Messages and notifications without reaching for the phone

Phone Link is most valuable for short interactions: acknowledge a message, read a delivery alert, or respond to a notification while your hands are already on the Windows keyboard. Notification controls are important in offices and shared spaces; turn off sensitive categories if the PC is visible to colleagues.

Calls from the computer

With the necessary permissions and Bluetooth or other required connection components, Phone Link can present your phone calls in Windows. The phone remains the cellular device and may still need to be nearby. Test the microphone, speakers and call handoff before relying on it for meetings or customer calls.

Photos for documents and presentations

Recent photos can move quickly from a phone camera to a Windows workflow. This is convenient for inserting a receipt or whiteboard image into a document. It is not a complete file-management system: for large folders, backups, structured archives or project sharing, use your normal cloud or cable workflow and confirm where the files are stored.

Mobile apps alongside desktop software

Mirroring can help with a phone-only approval app, a two-factor prompt or a mobile interface that is easier to use briefly. It is less suitable as a replacement for a native Windows application because the phone must remain connected, the app runs on the handset, and advanced mirroring support is selective.

Work accounts and profiles

Microsoft states that Phone Link does not currently support multiple Android profiles or work/school accounts. This matters if your organization separates personal and corporate users on one handset or requires a managed work profile. Confirm your employer’s device-management policy and test the exact account arrangement before depending on Phone Link for work.

Everyday phone use: where Android remains the deciding platform

Apps and services

Your everyday experience is determined primarily by the Android phone itself: its app store, banking and identity applications, messaging clients, navigation, wearables and accessibility tools. Phone Link exposes selected features on Windows but does not broaden the phone’s app compatibility or turn Android apps into native Windows programs.

Battery, camera and hardware

Battery endurance, camera quality, charging speed, display, durability and cellular-band support vary by model. The available Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal winner for these categories. Compare the specific phones you are considering using current model-level specifications and support policies; do not infer hardware performance from Phone Link compatibility.

Accessibility

Check accessibility on both screens. Android’s screen reader, magnification, hearing and motor controls may differ significantly between manufacturers, while Windows offers its own accessibility settings. A mirrored app may not expose every accessibility control correctly through the PC, so test essential tasks on the phone itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates and longevity

Android update length and timing are manufacturer- and model-specific. A phone that meets Android 10 today may eventually stop receiving security updates or lose compatibility with newer Phone Link experiences. Before purchase, read the manufacturer’s current operating-system and security-update commitment for the exact model and region.

Choose by scenario

Your situation Practical choice Checks to make
Windows 11 laptop is your main work machine and you want desktop access to texts and alerts Android phone with basic Phone Link support Android version, Wi-Fi, permissions and notification privacy.
You need several mirrored mobile apps at once An Android model explicitly eligible for the multiple-app experience Android 11 requirement, exact device listing and market availability.
You mainly need a reliable standalone phone and rarely use Windows integration Choose Android on battery, camera, accessibility, price and update criteria Phone Link can be a bonus rather than the deciding factor.
You require a managed work profile or multiple Android users Do not assume Phone Link will meet the requirement Microsoft’s stated lack of support; validate your organization’s approved workflow.
You want a phone that literally runs Windows 11 No supported mainstream option Windows 10 Mobile ended support on January 14, 2020.

Buying checklist for a Windows 11 user

  • Record the exact model number, not just the product family name.
  • Confirm Android 10 or later and check how long the model will receive security updates.
  • Open Microsoft’s supported-device list and verify each desired feature separately: basic Phone Link, Phone screen, Apps and RCS.
  • Check your country and mobile carrier, especially if RCS is important.
  • Ask whether the phone uses a work profile or multiple Android profiles that Phone Link cannot support.
  • Make sure your Windows PC meets the Windows 11 or updated Windows 10 requirement and has reliable Wi-Fi.
  • Decide whether you need one mirrored app or several at once; the latter has stricter Android and device requirements.
  • Test calls, notifications and recent-photo access during the return period before moving your work entirely to the setup.

Troubleshooting common failures

The QR code will not pair

  • Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network and temporarily disable guest-network isolation or VPNs that block local connections.
  • Confirm that Link to Windows and Phone Link are updated and that you are using the same Microsoft account when prompted.
  • Restart both devices, then remove the old pairing from Phone Link and Android before trying again.

Messages or notifications are missing

  • Recheck Android notification and SMS permissions for Link to Windows.
  • Remove battery-optimization restrictions for Link to Windows if Android is stopping it in the background.
  • Review Phone Link’s notification filters and Windows Focus or Do Not Disturb settings.

Calls connect but audio is wrong

  • Check that Windows has the correct microphone and speaker selected.
  • Confirm Bluetooth or the required call connection is active and that another headset has not taken over the audio.
  • Make a short test call before using the setup for an important meeting.

The Apps or Phone screen tab is absent

This usually indicates an eligibility limitation rather than a broken basic connection. Compare your exact model, Android version and market with Microsoft’s supported-device list. If the model is not listed, Phone Link can still provide basic messages, notifications, calls or photos without the advanced experience.

An app opens on the phone instead of the PC

That behavior is expected when the handset or app does not support mirroring, when only one mirrored app is allowed, or when the feature is temporarily unavailable. Remember that Phone Link mirrors a running phone app; it does not install the Android app in Windows.

What about newer Link to Windows previews?

A Windows Insider Blog post dated July 24, 2025 described a refreshed Link to Windows experience with items such as recent activity, PC status, file sending, remote PC locking and phone-screen mirroring. It was presented as an Insider preview for specified preview software, not as proof that every listed capability is generally available. Read the announcement at Windows Insider Blog, then check the current release documentation before buying a phone for one of those preview features.

Verdict

Android is better for a Windows 11 user because it is the phone platform Microsoft currently supports through Phone Link. The combination can make routine work—messages, notifications, calls and recent photos—more convenient, with app mirroring available on selected models. It is not a Windows 11 phone, and it does not remove Android’s normal limits around profiles, app compatibility or device-specific support. Choose the Android handset that meets your everyday hardware, accessibility and update needs, then verify its exact Phone Link features and regional eligibility.
