In Windows 11, create an album from the OneDrive Photos experience by selecting photos, choosing Add to album, and then choosing New album or an existing album. Microsoft’s current desktop guidance does not verify an album-deletion command or explain whether removing an album leaves its photos untouched, so do not delete the underlying files as a substitute.
First, identify the photo app you are using
“Photos app” can mean three different Windows experiences. The album steps in this article apply to OneDrive Photos, the photo view built into the OneDrive app. Microsoft describes it this way: “OneDrive includes a photos experience included with the OneDrive app on Windows 10 and Windows 11.” The current OneDrive Photos experience supports personal Microsoft accounts.

To open that experience in Windows 11, find the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar, select it, and then select View photos. If you do not see that entry, you may be in a different app, signed in with an account that is not eligible, or using a managed computer on which an organization has blocked personal OneDrive syncing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Experience | How it organizes pictures | What this means for albums |
|---|---|---|
| OneDrive Photos in the OneDrive app | Shows photos stored in OneDrive through a photo-focused view | Use the documented Add to album workflow described below |
| New Windows Photos app | Groups content in folders | Do not assume its folder controls are OneDrive Photos album controls |
| Photos Legacy | Retains album features from the older Photos experience | Its menus and behavior are separate from the current Windows Photos app and OneDrive Photos |
The distinction matters because a folder is a storage location, while a OneDrive album is an aggregated view of individual files. Microsoft says an album is not a folder that can be moved as one unit. A photo can therefore remain in its original OneDrive location while also appearing in an album.

What you need before creating an album
- A Windows 11 computer with the OneDrive app available in the taskbar notification area.
- A personal Microsoft account signed in to OneDrive. The current OneDrive Photos experience is intended for personal accounts.
- Photos already available to that OneDrive account. The album view references those files; it does not create a separate copy of each image.
- Permission to use personal OneDrive on the computer. A work or school administrator can block personal OneDrive syncing, which prevents the relevant experience from opening.
You do not need a separate photo editor, external drive, or special album software. If your aim is simply to group pictures for viewing or sharing, the built-in OneDrive Photos controls are sufficient.
How to create an album in OneDrive Photos
Microsoft’s desktop instructions use a short selection workflow. The labels below are the labels Microsoft documents; your layout can differ slightly if the service has updated its interface.
- Open OneDrive Photos. Select the OneDrive cloud icon on the right side of the Windows 11 taskbar, then choose View photos. Confirm that the page is showing the personal OneDrive photo experience rather than the separate Windows Photos app.
- Select the pictures. Use the selection controls in the photo view to mark every image you want in the album. Select only the files intended for that album; an album is a view of those individual files, not a new storage container.
- Choose Add to album. With the photos selected, click or select Add to album. This is the documented command for putting the selected files into an album.
- Create or extend an album. Choose New album to start one and enter a name, or select an existing album to add the selected photos to it.
- Check the result. Open the album from the album list and confirm that the intended photos appear. If a picture is missing, return to the photo view, select it, and use Add to album again, choosing the existing album.
Microsoft notes that albums can organize photos for sharing with friends or family. Because the album is an aggregated view, adding a photo to it should not be treated as moving the original file out of its folder. Keep the original folder structure intact if other apps, backups, or shared links depend on it.

How to name and maintain albums without creating duplicates
Choose names that describe the event or purpose
Use a name that distinguishes the album from the folder where the files are stored, such as “October 2026—Coastal Walk” or “Grandparent Visits.” Dates, locations, and an activity make later selection easier than names such as “Pictures” or “New album.”
Add photos to an existing album
When new images belong with an earlier collection, select them in the main photo view, choose Add to album, and select the existing album. This avoids making a second album with a nearly identical name.
Remember that one file can appear in more than one album
An aggregated album view does not represent a second copy of a photo. The same OneDrive file can be included in different album views while remaining in its original folder. If a file is moved, renamed, or deleted in OneDrive, that file-level change can affect every album view that references it.

Deleting an album: what Microsoft’s guidance does and does not establish
The official desktop instructions reviewed for OneDrive Photos explain how to create an album and add photos, but they do not document a Delete album menu or confirm what happens to member photos when an album is removed. That means there is no verified, universal deletion procedure to reproduce here.
Do not infer the result from the word “delete.” Microsoft’s description of an album as an aggregated view explains why it is conceptually different from a folder, but it does not prove whether a current interface command removes only that view, removes links to the files, or performs some other action. The effect must be confirmed in the current interface or in up-to-date Microsoft Support guidance for your account and version.
A safe way to investigate the current interface
- Open the album in OneDrive Photos and make a note of the album name and the number of items.
- Before selecting any removal command, verify that the photos still exist in their original OneDrive folders. This confirms that you know where the underlying files are stored.
- Look for an album-specific menu or command, and read its confirmation text carefully. A command that says Delete photo, Delete file, or Move to recycle bin is a file operation, not merely album organization.
- If the interface does not clearly identify an album-only action, stop rather than guessing. Check current Microsoft Support instructions or contact Microsoft Support with the exact Windows 11 and OneDrive interface you see.
- After any confirmed album-only action, verify both conditions separately: the album is no longer listed, and the original photos remain available in their folders. Do not assume one result from the other.
This cautious approach is necessary because the reviewed official pages do not establish that deleting an album leaves its photos in OneDrive. A statement that it is always safe, or that it always deletes the files, would go beyond the available documentation.

Do not delete the photos to remove an album
Deleting a OneDrive media file is a different operation from removing an album view. Microsoft states that deleted OneDrive media files go to the Windows Recycle Bin from the folder they came from and to the OneDrive Recycle Bin. That is file deletion, not album management.
- If you want to keep the pictures but stop grouping them together, do not select the photos and use a file-delete command.
- If you want the files gone everywhere they are synchronized, understand that deletion affects the underlying media and can affect every album view that references those files.
- If files were deleted accidentally, check both recycle-bin locations before restoring anything, and restore the files from the location that contains them.
The presence of a recycle bin is not evidence that an album was removed safely. It is evidence that a file-level deletion occurred and may be recoverable for a limited period under OneDrive’s normal rules.
Choose the right interface for the job
| Your goal | Use | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Create a shareable grouping of selected OneDrive pictures | OneDrive Photos opened through the OneDrive cloud icon and View photos | Requires a personal Microsoft account and access to personal OneDrive |
| Browse pictures arranged by storage location | The current Windows Photos app | Microsoft says the new app organizes content in folders rather than albums |
| Use the older Windows album experience | Photos Legacy | Its album features are not the same as the current Photos app or OneDrive Photos |
| Remove the actual image files | OneDrive’s file and folder controls | This sends deleted media to the Windows and OneDrive recycle bins; it is not album removal |
Use the first row when you need a curated view for friends or family. Use folder controls only when your intention is to change where files are stored or whether they continue to exist.

Troubleshooting common problems
“View photos” is missing
First check that you selected the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area, not the Photos app from the Start menu. Then check the signed-in account. Microsoft says the OneDrive Photos entry appears for users signed in with a personal Microsoft account. On a managed device, an organization may have blocked personal OneDrive syncing, in which case the feature cannot be opened through that account.
The album command is not visible
Make sure at least one photo is selected. The documented workflow exposes Add to album after selection. If you are viewing folders in the new Windows Photos app, switch back to OneDrive’s View photos experience; the two products do not share identical organization controls.
The same picture appears in several albums
That can be normal. Albums are aggregated views of individual files, so one file can be referenced by multiple albums. Check the original OneDrive folder before making any change that might delete the file.
Recommended Free Tools
You cannot determine whether a removal command deletes files
Do not proceed on an assumption. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not verify the album-deletion workflow or its effect on member photos. Record the exact command and confirmation wording shown in your interface, then use current Microsoft Support for clarification. If preserving the images is important, make an independent copy before testing any unverified action.
The practical answer
For Windows 11, open OneDrive’s photo experience from the taskbar cloud icon, select View photos, select the desired images, choose Add to album, and choose New album or an existing album. Treat that album as a view layered over individual OneDrive files. Microsoft’s currently reviewed instructions do not establish a safe, documented album-delete procedure or guarantee what happens to the underlying photos, so keep album removal separate from file deletion and verify any current command before using it.
