Yes. An 8GB PC exceeds Microsoft’s listed 4GB Windows 11 memory minimum, but that alone neither confirms the whole PC is eligible nor guarantees a smooth experience for every workload. Microsoft recommends 8GB for keeping a device running long term; how comfortable it feels depends on the computer and what you do with it.
Does 8GB meet Windows 11’s RAM requirement?
Yes. Microsoft lists “4 gigabytes (GB) or greater” as the memory requirement, so 8GB is above the stated floor. That is a minimum-specification check, not a speed rating or promise that every application will run well. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications also require a compatible 64-bit processor with at least two cores, 64GB or more of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a 720p display at least 9 inches diagonally. Windows 11 Home setup also requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account.

Microsoft’s download page identifies version 26H2 as the “2026 Update” at the time of writing. The release label can change as Microsoft updates its page. Microsoft says the Installation Assistant requires a compatible device and warns that installing Windows 11 on a PC below the minimum requirements is not recommended and may cause compatibility issues. What 8GB means for day-to-day use
Meeting the minimum is not the same as guaranteed comfort
Microsoft says that specific apps and hardware may need more than the general Windows minimum. Separately, its memory guidance states: “8 GB of memory is recommended to keep your device running long term.” That recommendation does not promise that every 8GB computer will feel fast in every situation. Microsoft’s memory guidance distinguishes the minimum from its recommendation.

Your workload makes a difference
Many open applications or browser tabs can slow a PC, according to Microsoft. A light set of everyday tasks may suit your needs on an 8GB machine; demanding applications or a habit of keeping many programs and tabs open may make the experience less comfortable. There is no established universal benchmark here that says how fast every 8GB system will feel, and a single PC’s results would not apply to all hardware and workloads. Microsoft’s Windows 11 performance guidance recommends checking CPU, memory, and disk use when investigating slowness.
Should you keep 8GB or upgrade?
If your PC handles your usual tasks satisfactorily, the 4GB minimum and Microsoft’s 8GB recommendation do not, by themselves, give you a reason to replace or upgrade it. If it feels slow, check resource use and whether many apps or tabs are open before assuming RAM is the cause. Processor, storage, and other hardware can also affect performance.

If you are considering more memory, first confirm that your exact computer model supports an upgrade. Microsoft notes that some PCs offer memory-upgrade options and recommends consulting the PC maker or a retailer. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the supported memory type and form factor, available slots, current module arrangement, and maximum capacity before buying a part; these details vary by device. Microsoft’s memory guidance recommends checking device-specific upgrade options rather than assuming every PC can be upgraded.
