Windows 11 Narrator Advanced Reading: Shortcuts, Scan Mode, and Advanced Mode

Windows 11 Narrator has two features that people often call “advanced reading.” For the current item, use the Standard keyboard layout and press Narrator+0 (zero) for Microsoft’s Read item advanced command. For a webpage or document, press Narrator+Spacebar to turn on Scan mode, then move with the arrow keys and activate controls with Enter or Spacebar. Narrator is built into Windows 11, so no separate download or installation is required.

“Advanced mode” is a different setting. It changes how the Narrator cursor moves through an application’s programmatic representation when you use the four arrow keys. The sections below show how to enable each feature, when to use it, and how to read by page, paragraph, line, word, or character without losing your place.

What “advanced reading” means in Windows 11 Narrator

There is no single switch named Advanced Reading. Microsoft documents two related controls:

Control What it does Best use
Read item advanced A keyboard command in the Standard layout that reads the item currently under the Narrator cursor. Have Narrator read one focused item, such as a heading, paragraph, button, message, or list entry.
Scan mode A navigation mode for webpages, documents, and other structured content. Arrow keys move through content, while Enter or Spacebar activates the focused control. Read a page or document in sequence and move through headings, links, controls, and text.
Advanced mode A Narrator setting that lets the four arrow keys move the Narrator cursor through an application’s programmatic representation. Explore an interface when ordinary cursor movement does not expose enough structure.

These controls operate at different scopes. Read item advanced acts on one current item; Scan mode handles content navigation; Advanced mode changes the cursor’s navigation model inside applications. Turning on one does not automatically turn on the others.

Before you start: Narrator key and keyboard layout

Know the Narrator key

Microsoft calls Caps Lock and Insert the default Narrator keys. In the commands in this guide, Narrator means whichever of those keys is configured as your Narrator key. For example, Narrator+0 means hold Caps Lock (or Insert) and press the number 0.

Use the Standard layout for the documented advanced command

Narrator offers Standard and Legacy keyboard layouts. The Narrator+0 Read item advanced command is listed for the Standard layout. If a shortcut does nothing, open Narrator settings and confirm that Standard is selected before troubleshooting the application you are reading.

Have the required keys available

The documented workflow uses a Narrator key, number row, arrow keys, Enter, Spacebar, Ctrl, Shift, function keys, and the bracket key. A full-size USB keyboard with clearly separated arrow keys can make the commands easier to perform, but Windows 11 does not require a special keyboard or an additional Narrator component.

Turn on Narrator and open its settings

  1. Press Windows logo key+Ctrl+Enter. This starts Narrator. Pressing the same combination again stops it.
  2. Press Windows logo key+Ctrl+N to open Narrator settings.
  3. In the keyboard-layout section, select Standard if you want the current command set, including Read item advanced.
  4. Leave the settings window with the normal Windows focus command or return to the page or document you want to read.

Narrator can read the settings window itself, so you can complete these steps without sighted assistance. If the start shortcut is intercepted by another utility or a hardware keyboard, open Windows Settings and search for Narrator, then use the Narrator control there to start the screen reader.

Use Read item advanced on the current item

Once Standard layout is active, move the Narrator cursor to the item you want and press Narrator+0, where 0 is the zero key, not the letter O. Microsoft labels this command Read item advanced. It is intended for the current item rather than an entire page.

A reliable sequence

  1. Place focus on the webpage, document, email, or application area containing the target item.
  2. Move the Narrator cursor until the item you need is current. The exact movement depends on whether you are in Scan mode, a text-editing field, or an application with its own navigation model.
  3. Press Narrator+0 once. Narrator reads the current item using the advanced reading behavior exposed by the Standard layout.
  4. To read a different item, move the cursor to it and use the command again.

Read item advanced is not a replacement for document reading. If you want Narrator to continue through a long webpage or report, use Scan mode or the reading-from-cursor commands described below.

Turn on Scan mode for webpages and documents

Scan mode provides sequential navigation through structured content. Press Narrator+Spacebar to toggle it on or off. It turns on automatically in Microsoft Mail, Outlook, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Firefox, but you can use the shortcut whenever it is off.

Navigate after Scan mode is on

  • Up and Down arrows: move through the content in the current reading context.
  • Left and Right arrows: move by character when the current control or reading context supports character navigation.
  • Enter or Spacebar: activate the focused link, button, checkbox, or other control.
  • Tab: move through interactive controls when you need to leave the content flow or reach browser and application chrome.

When you are inside an edit field, Scan mode turns off automatically so that arrow keys and other keystrokes can enter or move through text. Press Up or Down to leave the edit field and resume Scan mode. If the page seems unresponsive to reading commands, first check whether focus is still in an edit field.

Keep content and application controls separate

Narrator commands apply to the webpage or email content while that content area has focus. To reach the surrounding browser or mail application, use Tab or an application shortcut. This distinction explains why a command may move through article text but not reach a browser toolbar, address field, or message list.

Read from a cursor or start a document

For continuous reading, use the reading commands in the Standard layout:

Goal Command When to use it
Read from the current cursor position Narrator+R Continue reading from where the Narrator cursor is located.
Start reading a document Narrator+Ctrl+R or Narrator+Down arrow Begin a document-reading sequence rather than reading only one item.
Stop speech Ctrl Stop the current spoken output immediately.
Show the Narrator command list Narrator+F1 Open the list of available Narrator commands when you need to verify a shortcut.

Use Read item advanced when you need a focused item; use Read from cursor or document reading when you need sustained speech. Stopping speech with Ctrl does not turn Narrator off, so you can reposition the cursor and continue.

Move by page, paragraph, line, word, or character

Scan mode supports more than simple up-and-down movement. The Standard layout includes paired commands for moving backward and forward at several levels. The unshifted command moves forward; the Shift version moves backward.

Paragraph Narrator+Shift+I Narrator+I
Line Narrator+Shift+O Narrator+O
Word Narrator+Shift+P Narrator+P
Character Narrator+Shift+Open square bracket Narrator+Open square bracket

Choose the smallest useful unit

  • Use page commands to move quickly through a long report or article.
  • Use paragraph commands when headings or page breaks do not provide enough context.
  • Use line commands to inspect lists, code-like text, addresses, or tightly formatted tables.
  • Use word commands to check spelling, punctuation, or a specific term.
  • Use character commands to verify a single letter, number, symbol, or confusing punctuation mark.

The exact result depends on how the application exposes its content. A visually separated line may not be a separate programmatic line, and a custom web component may expose fewer navigation boundaries than ordinary HTML text.

Enable and use Advanced mode in Narrator settings

Advanced mode is a settings feature, not the Narrator+0 command. Microsoft describes it as allowing the four arrow keys to move the Narrator cursor through a programmatic representation of an application.

  1. Start Narrator with Windows logo key+Ctrl+Enter if it is not already running.
  2. Open Narrator settings with Windows logo key+Ctrl+N.
  3. Move through the settings interface until you find the Advanced mode option.
  4. Enable Advanced mode, then return to the application you want to inspect.
  5. Use the four arrow keys to move the Narrator cursor through the application’s exposed programmatic structure.

Advanced mode is useful when a conventional reading path does not reveal the relationships between controls and content. It does not automatically turn a page into a continuous reading stream, and it does not replace Scan mode’s Enter or Spacebar activation behavior. Treat it as a cursor-navigation choice for the application you are examining.

A practical webpage-reading workflow

Start at the content area

Open the page in a supported browser and move focus into the page content. If Narrator begins in the browser interface, use the browser’s normal shortcut or Tab navigation to reach the document area. Once inside, Scan mode is normally enabled automatically; if it is not, press Narrator+Spacebar.

Read in order

  1. Use Up and Down arrows to move through the page.
  2. Use page or paragraph commands when you need larger jumps.
  3. Use line, word, or character commands to verify details.
  4. Press Enter or Spacebar when the current item is a link or another actionable control.
  5. Press Ctrl to stop speech, then reposition and continue.

Inspect one item without starting a long read

When a heading, link, or control is current, press Narrator+0 to read that item with the advanced command. This is useful when surrounding page text is distracting or when you need to confirm exactly which control has focus.

A practical document or email workflow

Open the document or message and let Narrator enter the content area. Microsoft documents automatic Scan mode in Microsoft Mail and Outlook. If Scan mode is unavailable, toggle it with Narrator+Spacebar.

  4. When you reach an edit field, type or navigate normally; Scan mode turns off while editing.
  5. Move Up or Down out of the edit field to resume Scan mode and continue reading.

To reach message lists, toolbars, or other application controls, leave the message content with Tab or the mail application’s own shortcut. Narrator’s content-navigation commands are scoped to the message or document while that area has focus.

Troubleshoot shortcuts that do not work

Narrator does not start

  • Press Windows logo key+Ctrl+Enter again and listen for Narrator’s startup speech.
  • If another keyboard utility captures the combination, open Windows Settings, search for Narrator, and start it from the Narrator control.
  • Check that the keyboard is connected and that Ctrl, Windows logo, and Enter register normally.

Narrator+0 does nothing

  • Confirm that the Narrator key is Caps Lock or Insert, or identify which key you configured as the Narrator key.
  • Confirm that the keyboard layout is Standard rather than Legacy.
  • Make sure an item is current before pressing the command; Read item advanced reads the current item, not an arbitrary location on the page.
  • Use the number 0 key, not the letter O.

Arrow keys move inside a field instead of through the page

You are probably editing text. Scan mode turns off automatically in edit fields. Press Up or Down to leave the field and resume content navigation, or use the field’s normal editing behavior while you remain inside it.

Scan mode seems off

Press Narrator+Spacebar once and test the Up and Down arrows. If the focus is in browser or application chrome, move back into the content area first. Scan mode is a content-navigation mode, so it may not control the surrounding toolbar or address bar.

A command behaves differently in an application

Applications expose different programmatic structures. Check the current context with Narrator+F1, try the documented Standard-layout command again, and use Advanced mode when you need the arrow keys to follow the application’s exposed representation rather than the normal reading flow.

Choosing the right reading approach

If your goal is… Use… Why
Hear one current control or item Read item advanced It targets the item under the Narrator cursor.
Read a webpage or document in sequence Scan mode plus Read from cursor or document reading It combines structured movement with continuous speech.
Jump by a known unit Page, paragraph, line, word, or character command It avoids moving one item at a time through a long passage.
Explore an application’s exposed structure Advanced mode It changes four-arrow-key movement for the Narrator cursor.
Reach browser, mail, or application controls Tab or the application’s shortcut Content commands apply to the page or message while that area has focus.
