Windows 11 has two different time tasks that are easy to confuse. To type a date and time into the PC, use Settings > Time & language > Date & time and temporarily disable automatic time. To choose a custom network time server, configure the Windows Time service (W32Time) from an elevated Command Prompt with w32tm. The Settings control changes the local clock; it does not provide a field for an arbitrary NTP server.
Choose the correct method first
Your goal determines which Windows 11 route is appropriate. The two procedures affect different parts of the system and should not be treated as interchangeable.

| What you need to do | Windows 11 route | What changes | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enter a known date and time once | Settings > Time & language > Date & time | The computer’s local clock | It does not select or configure an NTP server |
| Tell Windows which network peers to use | Administrator Command Prompt with w32tm |
Windows Time service source configuration | It does not guarantee that the service has synchronized until you verify the result |
| Use the organization’s existing time hierarchy | Usually the domain’s Windows Time policy and AD DS hierarchy | The source inherited by a domain member | A local override may be inappropriate or may be replaced by policy |
Windows Time is a network clock-synchronization service. Microsoft describes it as providing synchronization without extensive configuration, but it is not designed to be a high-accuracy timing source for specialized applications. That distinction matters before you replace an ordinary configuration with a manual peer.

Manually enter the date and time in Settings
Use this procedure when the immediate requirement is to correct the displayed local date or time on one Windows 11 computer. You need access to the device, but this process is not the documented way to enter a custom server name.
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- In Settings, open Time & language and select Date & time.
- Turn Set time automatically Off. While this switch remains on, Windows controls the value and the manual-entry button is unavailable or ineffective.
- Under Set the date and time manually (the wording can appear as Set the date and time), select Change.
- Enter the required date and time in the dialog, then select Change again to apply it.
This changes the local clock value. It does not change the Windows Time service’s peer list, and it will not make Windows contact a server you type into the date-and-time dialog. If automatic time is still disabled, the clock will remain a manually maintained value rather than periodically correcting itself from a network source.
After the correction, decide whether automatic time should be enabled again. Re-enabling it returns the PC to its normal automatic behavior; leaving it off means future drift must be corrected manually. If the computer is domain-joined, do not assume this local edit is a durable fix: policy or the domain hierarchy can later set the clock again.
Time zone is a separate setting
A correct clock value and a correct time zone are separate. The same Date & time page contains the time-zone controls. If the minutes look right but the displayed hour is wrong for your location, check the selected time zone rather than repeatedly changing the clock. Changing the zone does not configure an NTP peer either.
Time-zone changes alter how Windows displays and interprets local time; they do not change the underlying question of which service supplies synchronized time. Check the zone before diagnosing a network-time problem.
Configure a custom Windows Time peer with W32Time
Use W32Time when an administrator needs Windows 11 to obtain time from a specified DNS name or IP address. The command must be run in a Command Prompt opened with administrative privileges.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
- At the administrator prompt, enter the configuration command with the peer or peers selected for your environment.
Use the exact host name or address supplied by your network administrator. The command syntax is documented, but Microsoft does not identify one universally suitable public server for every Windows 11 installation. A reachable internal source is often preferable in managed environments, while a personal workgroup PC still needs a source that its network permits.

Set one manual peer
Replace ntpserver.example with the DNS name or IP address of the time server you have chosen:
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntpserver.example" /syncfromflags:manual /update
The switches have distinct jobs:
/manualpeerlistsupplies the peer list. Microsoft documents a space-delimited list of DNS names or IP addresses./syncfromflags:manualtells W32Time to use the manually specified source rather than another source-selection mode./updatenotifies the service that its configuration has changed.
A successful command means that Windows accepted the configuration request; it is not proof that packets reached the server or that the clock is synchronized. Verify the resulting configuration and then investigate any service or network error reported by the computer. Keep a record of the exact command, because quoting and spacing are part of the peer-list syntax.
Set multiple peers
Place multiple names or addresses inside the same quoted value, separated by spaces. The general pattern is:
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"primary.example secondary.example tertiary.example" /syncfromflags:manual /update
Use actual peers approved for your network; the syntax alone is not a recommendation for any particular public server. Microsoft recommends preparing three or more time servers when a client uses multiple peers. With only two peers, Microsoft’s documentation shows the lower-priority peer marked UseAsFallbackOnly (0x2) so it is used as a fallback rather than treated as an equal primary source. The exact peer policy should come from the system or network administrator.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that adding names creates equal redundancy. Decide which source is primary, which are alternatives, and whether the network allows all of them. A list containing unreachable or unauthorized hosts can make diagnosis harder even though the command itself is syntactically valid.
Inspect the configuration you actually applied
After changing the peer list, query W32Time from the same administrator Command Prompt:
w32tm /query /configuration
Microsoft describes this output as a listing of the W32Time parameters configured for the client. Check that the manual peer list and the source-selection setting reflect the values you intended. This command inspects configuration; it should not be presented as a synchronization test by itself.

- The manual list is absent: the command may not have been run elevated, the syntax may have been malformed, or a management policy may have overwritten the local setting.
- The list is present but the PC still follows another source: check
/syncfromflagsoutput and determine whether domain policy controls the client. - The command is accepted but the time remains wrong: a configured peer can still be unreachable, unavailable, blocked by network controls, or unsuitable for the environment. Configuration acceptance is not synchronization confirmation.
- The displayed hour differs while minutes track correctly: inspect the time zone before changing peers or repeatedly editing the clock.
Domain-joined computers need a different decision
Most computers joined to an Active Directory domain commonly use the NT5DS client type and obtain time through the domain hierarchy. In that arrangement, the computer is not an isolated workstation choosing an arbitrary Internet source: domain controllers and policy determine how time is distributed.
Before applying a local manual-peer command, establish whether the PC is organization-managed. A domain administrator may intentionally configure the hierarchy through policy, and a local change can conflict with that design or be replaced later. On a personal workgroup computer, a manually selected peer may be reasonable when you control the network and have a documented reason. On a managed device, ask the administrator which source is approved instead of overriding the hierarchy yourself.
Why the distinction affects sign-in
Time synchronization is important to Kerberos and Active Directory Domain Services authentication. A clock that drifts beyond the tolerance expected by the domain can cause sign-in, ticket, or access failures even when the desktop clock appears close to correct. For that reason, correcting a domain member’s source is an infrastructure change, not merely a cosmetic clock adjustment.
If a business computer suddenly reports a time error, collect the current policy and configuration rather than forcing a public peer. The domain team may need to correct an upstream domain controller or policy setting so that the entire hierarchy remains consistent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRequirements and planning before changing a peer
- Administrative rights: the documented
w32tm /configpattern is intended for an administrator Command Prompt. - A known source: use a DNS name or IP address supplied by your organization or chosen according to your network policy. The Microsoft syntax documentation does not nominate one universally suitable server.
- Network reachability: the client must be able to reach the selected time service through local firewall, VPN, and perimeter rules.
- Topology awareness: identify whether the computer is standalone, in a workgroup, or joined to an Active Directory domain.
- Peer count: if you configure multiple peers, plan for three or more as Microsoft’s guidance recommends; if only two are available, define the lower-priority fallback behavior deliberately.
- Accuracy expectations: ordinary W32Time is not a substitute for a high-accuracy timing system used by specialized scientific, industrial, or financial workloads.
- Change ownership: know who is responsible for the setting and whether a management policy will reapply a different value.
These checks prevent a common failure pattern: editing the clock, then editing the peer, then discovering that a domain policy or time-zone setting was the actual cause. Separate the desired outcome—display correction, ongoing synchronization, or domain repair—before changing anything.
Common problems and recovery paths
The Change button is unavailable
Return to Settings > Time & language > Date & time and turn Set time automatically off. The manual date/time dialog is tied to that switch. If the control is locked or immediately reverts, the device may be governed by organizational policy; contact the administrator rather than repeatedly editing the value.

I entered a server name in Settings and nothing happened
The Settings page has a manual clock-entry control, not a documented arbitrary-NTP-host field. Use the elevated w32tm /config command for peer configuration, then inspect the result with w32tm /query /configuration.
The command returns an access or permission error
Close the window, search for Command Prompt again, select Run as administrator, and repeat the command. A normal, non-elevated prompt may not be allowed to update W32Time configuration.

On a domain member, Group Policy or domain management may be restoring the intended NT5DS hierarchy. Confirm ownership of the setting with the domain administrator. On a personal PC, review whether another management tool is applying time policy before making repeated local changes.
The clock is still inaccurate after configuration
First separate a display problem from a synchronization problem: verify the time zone, inspect the configuration output, and check network access to the chosen peer. Do not claim that synchronization succeeded solely because the command completed. If the application requires high-accuracy timing, follow Microsoft’s guidance for high-accuracy environments rather than assuming a manual W32Time peer meets that requirement.
Two peers produce unexpected selection behavior
Microsoft’s documentation treats a two-peer arrangement differently from a three-or-more-peer arrangement by showing UseAsFallbackOnly (0x2) for the lower-priority peer. Decide which peer is primary and document the fallback role; do not assume that two unqualified entries provide equal redundancy.
The PC shows the right time but authentication still fails
On a domain device, a visually correct clock does not prove that the machine is using the intended hierarchy. Preserve the configuration output and involve the domain administrator, because Kerberos and AD DS depend on coherent time across participating systems.

Settings versus W32Time: a practical decision guide
| Situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need to type today’s date and time once on a standalone PC | Disable Set time automatically and use Change in Date & time | This is the supported local-clock entry workflow |
| You need a named internal time source on a workgroup PC | Use the elevated w32tm /config manual-peer pattern |
The requirement concerns W32Time’s network source, not the displayed value |
| You need several approved sources | Provide a quoted, space-delimited peer list and plan for three or more servers | This follows Microsoft’s multiple-peer guidance |
| You have a domain-joined business PC | Check the domain’s time policy before making local changes | The normal NT5DS hierarchy may be intentional and security-relevant |
| You need laboratory-grade or application-specific accuracy | Use the high-accuracy architecture specified for that workload | W32Time is not designed as a highly accurate time source |
What a complete change record should contain
For a support ticket or change log, record the computer’s management context, the date and time of the change, the exact peer names or addresses used, whether one or multiple peers were configured, and the output of w32tm /query /configuration. Note whether the machine is expected to follow a domain hierarchy and whether the objective was a one-time clock correction or ongoing network synchronization. This information makes it possible to distinguish a wrong local value, a policy conflict, and an unreachable time source without repeating unrelated edits.

Key points to remember
- Manual date/time entry in Settings changes the local clock only.
- A custom synchronization server is configured through W32Time with
w32tmfrom an elevated Command Prompt. /manualpeerlistaccepts DNS names or IP addresses; multiple peers go inside one quoted, space-delimited value.- Microsoft recommends three or more servers for a multiple-peer client and documents a
UseAsFallbackOnly(0x2) role for the lower-priority peer when only two are used. - Use
w32tm /query /configurationto inspect what Windows has configured, but do not treat that output alone as proof of successful synchronization. - Domain members commonly use the Active Directory time hierarchy, and W32Time is not intended for high-accuracy timing requirements.
- Check the time zone and management policy before treating every clock discrepancy as an NTP problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change the time server in Windows 11?
Use an elevated Command Prompt and run w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"server-name" /syncfromflags:manual /update, replacing the example with an approved DNS name or IP address. The Settings page changes the local clock but does not provide the documented custom-peer field.
Can I manually set the date and time without configuring a server?
Yes. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn Set time automatically off, select Change, enter the value, and select Change again. This is a local clock edit, not ongoing synchronization.
How many manual time servers should I configure?
Microsoft recommends preparing three or more servers when a client uses multiple peers. If only two are used, its documentation shows the lower-priority peer with UseAsFallbackOnly (0x2) rather than assuming both are equal primaries.
How can I check whether Windows accepted my peer setting?
Run w32tm /query /configuration from an administrator Command Prompt and review the peer list and source-selection parameters. The output confirms configuration, not that synchronization has succeeded.
Should I change the time server on a domain-joined PC?
Usually consult the domain administrator first. Domain members commonly use the NT5DS Active Directory hierarchy, and local changes can conflict with policy or be replaced. Time consistency also supports Kerberos and AD DS authentication.
Is W32Time suitable for high-precision applications?
No. Microsoft states that Windows Time was not designed to function as a highly accurate time source. Specialized scientific, industrial, or financial workloads need the high-accuracy architecture specified for that environment.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings when you need to enter a local date or time. Use an elevated w32tm command when you need to configure a network peer, then inspect the configuration and account for domain policy, peer count, reachability, and accuracy requirements.
