Start by checking the outlet, charger connections and whether the adapter meets your laptop’s exact power requirements. A charge limit may also be intentionally holding the battery below 100%. If those checks do not help, use troubleshooting steps from your laptop’s manufacturer rather than applying generic driver fixes.
Check the charger and power path
- Try a working outlet. Connect the charger directly to a known-working wall outlet and firmly seat the cable at both ends.
- Verify the adapter for your exact laptop model. Check the laptop’s manual or manufacturer support page for the required power rating. A connector that fits is not enough to confirm compatibility. Dell explains that an adapter with insufficient wattage can run the computer without charging the battery (Dell Support).
- If using USB-C, check the port and power requirements. Confirm that the particular laptop port supports charging and that the power supply meets the model’s requirements. There is no universal USB-C wattage that can be recommended without knowing the laptop model.
- Inspect the cable, plug and charging port. Look for visible damage, loose connections, debris or bent pins. Do not use a visibly damaged charger. If available, try a known-good adapter that is correctly rated for the laptop; on models with another supported charging port, test that port too. Microsoft says a Surface Connect charger’s indicator should light when connected, and Dell also recommends checking the adapter and port (Microsoft Surface support; Dell Support).
Disconnect accessories that draw power
Unplug docks and other power-hungry accessories, then check whether charging resumes. Microsoft includes this as a Surface troubleshooting check. If charging changes, that is a clue to investigate the setup; it does not by itself prove an accessory is faulty (Microsoft Surface support).

Check whether a charge limit is holding the battery below full
If the laptop repeatedly stops charging at about the same percentage, check the manufacturer’s battery utility or firmware settings for a charge limit, conservation mode or battery-health setting. Names and locations vary by model. These are examples of manufacturer settings, not Windows-wide defaults:

If you find a limit and need more charge, use the manufacturer’s instructions to change it. A deliberate battery-management limit is not, by itself, evidence of a fault.

Use driver and update procedures only for your laptop
Battery-driver instructions differ by manufacturer. Microsoft’s Surface procedure includes uninstalling the Surface battery device in Device Manager, scanning for hardware changes and restarting. Microsoft specifically warns not to uninstall the battery driver on Surface Pro X, because restoring the drivers may require a full system reset. Dell publishes separate ACPI battery-driver instructions for Dell laptops; neither procedure is a general fix for every Windows 11 device (Microsoft Surface support; Dell Support).
For Surface devices, Microsoft also recommends checking updates through the Surface app and Windows Update. For other laptops, use the manufacturer’s official update tools and instructions.

When the basic checks do not fix it
If a correctly rated adapter and the checks above do not restore charging, run the manufacturer’s diagnostics or contact its service channel. A battery the laptop cannot detect, a damaged charging port, or failure to charge with a known-good, correctly rated adapter may require hands-on diagnosis. Without the laptop’s make and model, the symptom alone cannot identify which component has failed.

Stop using the laptop and disconnect its charger if the case is bulging, the trackpad is raised, the laptop no longer sits flat, or the battery appears swollen. Do not puncture, compress or forcibly remove the battery. Dell advises arranging support and avoiding pressure or damage to the battery; MSI likewise advises stopping use and contacting its service center for a swollen or deformed battery (Dell Support; MSI Support).
