This control is not available on every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft documents the integration for Windows 11 version 25H2, build 26200.7922 or later, on hardware with a backlit keyboard and the required ambient-light sensing support. A missing page usually indicates a hardware, firmware, Windows-build, or manufacturer-utility limitation rather than a hidden display setting.

Change the keyboard backlight auto-brightness setting
Use this procedure when the keyboard illumination changes as the room gets brighter or darker:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then choose Keyboard.
- Open Keyboard backlight.
- Switch Change keyboard brightness automatically when lighting changes to Off to disable ambient-light adjustment, or to On to allow it.
Microsoft describes this as a device-dependent option in its Keyboard Backlight Implementation Guide. The switch controls the keyboard’s response to ambient light; it does not directly set the keyboard’s maximum brightness, color, timeout, or every way the light can be turned off.

After changing the switch, test it in noticeably different lighting. A sensor may react gradually rather than changing the keys immediately, and a steady room may not produce an obvious difference. If you need a particular fixed level, use the brightness controls provided by the laptop or keyboard maker, when available, instead of relying on the automatic option.
Check whether your PC supports the Windows control
The Windows integration is conditional. Microsoft’s guide states that support is available for Windows 11 version 25H2, build 26200.7922 or higher. The automatic feature is intended for a system with both a keyboard backlight and an ambient-light sensor. An external keyboard can also use the feature when it is attached to a host computer that has an ambient-light sensor.
These requirements explain why two Windows 11 computers can show different Settings pages. A laptop may have illuminated keys but no sensor, while another model may include both pieces of hardware but expose control through its firmware or manufacturer software instead of the general Windows page. The guide covers simple global keyboard backlights; zoned or per-key RGB systems are handled through Dynamic Lighting rather than this single global brightness switch.
Hardware capability is separate from whether the backlight is currently enabled. A model can have illuminated keys but restrict them to a function-key shortcut, a BIOS option, or a vendor application. Conversely, installing a newer Windows build cannot create a sensor or add LEDs that the computer was not designed with.
Confirm the Windows build
Open Settings > System > About and review the Windows specifications for the installed version and OS build. If the build is earlier than the documented 25H2, 26200.7922 threshold, the Keyboard backlight page may not exist even when the keyboard itself is illuminated. Updating Windows can make the integration available, but an update cannot add a missing ambient-light sensor or backlit-key hardware.
Even on a qualifying build, the page is exposed only when the device reports compatible backlight hardware and sensing support. If Windows is current but the page remains absent, use the exact model number when checking the manufacturer’s specifications and support instructions.
Understand which setting is changing the light
Several controls can make a keyboard appear to brighten or dim. They operate independently, so changing one may not stop another from acting.
| Control | What it changes | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard auto-brightness | Keyboard brightness in response to ambient lighting | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Keyboard backlight |
| Energy Saver keyboard dimming | Keyboard brightness while Energy Saver is active | Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver |
| Display adaptive brightness | Built-in screen brightness based on lighting conditions | Settings > System > Display |
| OEM illumination or timeout | Model-specific backlight levels, enablement, or shutoff timing | The computer maker’s BIOS or utility; paths vary by model |
Keyboard backlight auto-brightness and adaptive display brightness can respond to the same room lighting, but they are separate features. Microsoft explicitly distinguishes keyboard backlight autobrightness from display adaptive brightness. Changing a screen-brightness option under Display settings will not switch the keyboard auto-brightness control.

Content-adaptive display brightness or contrast is another display-only behavior. It can respond to what is shown on the screen, not just the light in the room, and it does not determine keyboard illumination. Diagnose the screen and keyboard separately before changing drivers or firmware.
Stop Energy Saver from dimming the keyboard
If the keys become dimmer only when the battery-saving mode starts, inspect Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. Look for Lower keyboard brightness when using energy saver and turn it off if you want the keyboard to retain its normal level during Energy Saver.
This is not the same as ambient-light autobrightness. Microsoft’s implementation guidance says compatible devices can lower keyboard brightness when Energy Saver is enabled and documents a default 70% brightness multiplier. That percentage is a technical implementation default, not a promise that every manufacturer applies exactly a 30% reduction or exposes the same slider. If the keyboard changes with power state but not with room lighting, Energy Saver is the more likely cause.

If the behavior follows the power state, restore the setting you prefer in Energy Saver; changing the ambient-light switch will not remove that separate dimming rule.
What to do when “Keyboard backlight” is missing
A missing page or missing toggle is usually an indication of compatibility or ownership of the control, not a navigation mistake. Work through these checks:
- Verify the hardware. Look for a backlight symbol on the function keys or check the exact model specification. A keyboard without illuminated hardware cannot expose a Windows backlight setting.
- Check the Windows release and build. The documented Windows integration requires version 25H2, build 26200.7922 or later. Earlier builds may not contain the page.
- Check the ambient-light sensor requirement. A backlit keyboard alone does not establish support for automatic adjustment.
- Look for a manufacturer control. Some systems keep illumination and timeout settings in firmware or a vendor utility rather than in Windows’ Keyboard page.
- Use the model’s support documentation. Firmware menus, utility names, and feature restrictions differ between models, so do not assume a path from another computer applies to yours.
Microsoft’s guide is the reference for the Windows integration. If your model is outside that implementation, its manufacturer documentation is the authoritative source for available controls. A support page for a similar-looking laptop is not sufficient: vendors can ship different keyboard, sensor, BIOS, and utility combinations under one product family.
Manufacturer controls can override or supplement Windows
Dell BIOS illumination and timeout
Dell’s support instructions explain that a Keyboard Illumination item appears in BIOS only on models equipped with backlit-keyboard hardware. Some BIOS versions also provide a separate keyboard-backlight timeout setting. These controls can determine whether the light is enabled and how long it remains on, independently of Windows’ ambient-light switch. See Dell’s model-specific guidance at How to Turn on and Turn Off the Keyboard Light on a Dell Laptop.
A BIOS timeout explains a common misunderstanding: disabling automatic brightness can stop room-light adjustments while the keyboard still turns off after inactivity. The timeout is a different policy and must be changed where Dell exposes it. BIOS labels and available values vary by model and firmware revision.

ASUS MyASUS auto-brighten
ASUS documents an Auto-brighten option in MyASUS for supported devices, with availability restrictions that vary by model. If the Windows page is absent or does not govern the behavior you are seeing, check the MyASUS device settings and the documentation for your exact computer. The feature details and restrictions are listed in ASUS MyASUS – Device Settings.
Dell and ASUS are examples of vendor-specific implementation, not universal instructions. Other manufacturers may place the control in a different utility, BIOS menu, keyboard hotkey layer, or embedded-controller setting. Avoid installing a utility intended for another model; the correct application and firmware depend on the computer’s exact product identification.
Troubleshoot a backlight that still changes
The brightness changes with room lighting after you turned auto-brightness off
Reopen Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Keyboard backlight and verify that the automatic-lighting switch is off. If it is already off, check whether the change occurs when Energy Saver activates. A vendor utility or firmware setting may also be applying its own ambient-light rule; inspect the computer maker’s keyboard or illumination settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also note whether the change occurs only after waking from sleep, connecting an external keyboard, or switching power modes. Those clues can identify a firmware or utility policy rather than the Windows toggle. If the behavior is limited to RGB effects or zones, use Dynamic Lighting or the keyboard maker’s application instead of the global backlight page.
The light turns off after a period of inactivity
The Windows ambient-light toggle does not promise a universal timeout or permanent-on state. A timeout can be implemented separately in BIOS, a manufacturer utility, keyboard firmware, or power management. Look for a model-specific timeout or sleep setting rather than treating the auto-brightness switch as a timer control.
The screen changes but the keyboard does not, or vice versa
Display adaptive brightness and keyboard backlight autobrightness are independent. Check the relevant section: display behavior under System > Display, keyboard behavior under Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard, and power-saving dimming under System > Power & battery > Energy saver. A change in one area does not confirm that the other feature is enabled.
An RGB keyboard does not follow the global brightness switch
Microsoft’s implementation guidance separates simple global backlights from zoned or per-key RGB lighting. RGB effects and zones may be managed through Dynamic Lighting or the keyboard maker’s software, so use those controls for color, zones, and effects. The general Keyboard backlight switch is not a universal replacement for RGB controls.

An external keyboard has no automatic adjustment
An external keyboard can participate when the host computer supplies the required ambient-light sensor and the keyboard exposes compatible global backlight integration. A desktop or monitor without that sensor may not meet the same conditions, even if the external keyboard has illuminated keys. Check the keyboard and host specifications together, then use the keyboard’s own software if Windows does not expose the page.

What the Windows switch does—and does not—promise
With a supported device, turning the switch on lets Windows use the ambient-light sensor to adjust keyboard brightness. Turning it off prevents that particular Windows ambient-light adjustment. It does not guarantee a fixed brightness if another mechanism is active, such as Energy Saver dimming, an OEM timeout, firmware hotkeys, or RGB-management software.
Likewise, the presence of a backlight does not prove that the PC supports automatic adjustment. The hardware must expose the required integration, and the exact labels can vary with Windows build, BIOS revision, utility version, and computer model. Treat the Settings page as one layer of control and the model-specific documentation as the source for anything it does not expose.
A practical decision path
- Want the keys to react to room lighting? Enable Change keyboard brightness automatically when lighting changes on the Keyboard backlight page.
- Want a steadier keyboard level? Disable that switch, then test the keyboard while normal power settings are active.
- Does it dim only in battery-saving mode? Review Lower keyboard brightness when using energy saver.
- Is the page unavailable? Confirm the backlit hardware, Windows build, ambient-light-sensor support, and model-specific BIOS or utility controls.
- Are you using per-key or zoned RGB? Manage it through Dynamic Lighting or the manufacturer’s RGB software instead of expecting the global Windows switch to control every effect.

Ambient-light autobrightness is one possibility. Energy Saver can dim the keyboard when power saving starts, and a BIOS, firmware, or manufacturer utility can apply its own illumination or timeout rule. Identify whether the change follows room lighting, battery-saving mode, inactivity, or an RGB effect before changing settings.
Where is the keyboard backlight setting?
On supported systems, it is under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Keyboard backlight. If that page is absent, check the backlit-hardware specification, the Windows 11 25H2 build requirement, and the computer maker’s BIOS or utility.
Does turning off auto-brightness turn the keyboard light off?
No. It disables Windows’ response to ambient lighting. The backlight can remain on at its current level, dim through Energy Saver, turn off through a timeout, or be controlled by firmware and RGB software.
Can display adaptive brightness control the keyboard?
No. Display adaptive brightness is a screen feature under Settings > System > Display. Keyboard backlight autobrightness has its own control and hardware requirements.
Does every Windows 11 laptop support this feature?
No. Microsoft documents the integration for Windows 11 version 25H2, build 26200.7922 or higher, and compatible keyboard-backlight and ambient-light-sensor hardware. Manufacturer restrictions can further limit availability.

Bottom line
Use the Keyboard backlight page to enable or disable Windows’ ambient-light adjustment, then check Energy Saver separately if the keys dim during power saving. If the page is missing or the light still changes, the remaining control is likely tied to the hardware, sensor, BIOS, firmware, RGB software, or the computer maker’s utility. Windows’ switch is specific, not a universal control for every keyboard-light behavior.
