KB5044280 is a historical Windows 11 version 21H2 cumulative security update, released on October 8, 2024. It moved 21H2 to OS build 22000.3260 and included servicing stack update KB5044415 (build 22000.3250). It does not move a computer to a newer Windows 11 feature version. As of August 18, 2026, every Windows 11 21H2 edition is out of normal support, so the proper remedy is a supported feature upgrade or replacement hardware—not simply reinstalling KB5044280.
Microsoft’s release documentation described the package as a security update, listed no known issues at publication, and documented no additional non-security fixes.

Check whether the PC is still on 21H2
Use winver
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
winverand press Enter. - Record the Windows version and OS build. Version 21H2 with build 22000.3260 (or another 22000 build) confirms the old feature release.
Use Settings
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then About.
- Under Windows specifications, record the edition, version, installed date and OS build.
Check both edition and version: Home and Pro became unsupported earlier than Enterprise, Education, Enterprise multi-session and IoT Enterprise, but all 21H2 editions are unsupported now.
What to do if the PC is on 21H2
- Back up important files. Verify that the backup can be opened before changing the operating system.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page for current firmware, chipset and device drivers.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install the offered feature update and restart when prompted.
- Run
winveragain to confirm the new feature version and build.
Windows Update is the least disruptive route because it normally preserves applications, files and settings. If it does not offer a supported upgrade, use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page, which provides the Installation Assistant, Media Creation Tool and ISO options.

Microsoft says the Installation Assistant requires:
- A qualifying Windows 10 or Windows 11 license.
- Windows 10 version 2004 or later when upgrading from Windows 10.
- At least 9 GB of free disk space for the download.
- An administrator account.
- An x64 processor; the Assistant does not run on Arm-based PCs.
- Hardware that meets Windows 11 requirements.
For a damaged installation, installation media can perform an in-place repair or a clean installation. An in-place upgrade generally preserves software and data, while a clean install removes applications and can erase data; Microsoft recommends a backup before either process.

When Windows Update does not offer a feature upgrade
Compatibility safeguard hold
Microsoft may temporarily withhold a feature update because of a known application, driver or hardware compatibility problem. Update the affected software or driver and wait for the hold to be lifted rather than forcing the upgrade immediately. Microsoft explains these checks in its PC Health Check guidance.
Organization-managed computer
Windows Update for Business, WSUS, Microsoft Endpoint management or another policy may control Enterprise, Education and multi-session devices. Contact the organization’s administrator instead of changing update policy without authorization.

Hardware eligibility problem
Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check to identify an unsupported processor, insufficient memory or storage, missing TPM 2.0 or disabled Secure Boot. If the device fails requirements, the responsible options are hardware replacement or upgrade, a supported replacement PC, or a narrowly isolated legacy-use arrangement. Microsoft warns that bypass installations can cause compatibility problems and may leave the device unsupported or without update entitlement.
Update components or installation problems
- Restart and retry Windows Update.
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals and free storage space.
- Install firmware and drivers supplied by the PC manufacturer.
- Follow the vendor’s documented process before removing incompatible third-party security software.
- Run Windows’ built-in update troubleshooting tools and review Windows Update or setup logs.
- Use installation media for an in-place repair when appropriate.
- For a business-critical machine, stop repeated retries and investigate before proceeding.
Can KB5044280 still be installed manually?
Microsoft’s Update Catalog may still provide the standalone package, and administrators can use WSUS or other managed channels. However, manually installing this historical cumulative update does not extend 21H2 support. A computer that reaches build 22000.3260 remains on unsupported version 21H2, so manual installation is only a short-term administrative or diagnostic action.
Use the Microsoft Update Catalog, not third-party “KB download” mirrors. Confirm the edition, architecture and current build before applying any package.

Uninstalling the update for administrators
Because KB5044280 is combined with servicing stack update KB5044415, Microsoft says the usual wusa.exe /uninstall method cannot remove it. To identify installed packages, run an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /online /get-packages
If removal is genuinely necessary after identifying a regression, Microsoft directs administrators to remove the specific LCU package:
DISM /online /remove-package /PackageName:<package-name>
Package removal does not make 21H2 supported again and should normally be performed only under IT guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does KB5044280 upgrade Windows 11 to a newer version?
No. It updates version 21H2 to build 22000.3260 only. A feature upgrade is required to leave 21H2.
Can I keep using Windows 11 21H2?
The computer may continue to run, but 21H2 no longer receives normal monthly security and quality updates. Upgrade or replace it for supported protection.
Why does Windows say it is up to date?
That message can describe the latest update available for the installed policy or feature version. Confirm the actual version and build with winver; an up-to-date 21H2 installation is still out of support.
What if my PC cannot meet Windows 11 requirements?
Do not treat a bypass as a supported fix. Replace or upgrade the hardware where practical, replace the PC, or isolate the device for a narrowly defined legacy task.
