0x80070002 in BlueBox.log does not, by itself, identify why a Windows 11 in-place upgrade failed. BlueBox.log records communication between Windows Setup and Windows Update during the down-level phase; use the full Setup error and phase, the related Setup logs, and SetupDiag to find evidence of the actual failure. Without logs from the affected PC, the specific cause is undetermined.
What 0x80070002 in BlueBox.log tells you
Microsoft places BlueBox.log in C:WindowsLogsMoSetup. It records communication between setup.exe and Windows Update during the down-level phase of Setup. Microsoft recommends it for investigating certain down-level Windows Update or WSUS failures, and for investigating error 0xC1900107. Its presence does not prove that a particular file is missing or identify the underlying cause of a failed upgrade. Microsoft’s Windows upgrade log guide describes the logs and their roles.

The number 0x80070002 alone is not enough to diagnose the failure. The complete Setup result code, any extended code, and the phase or operation help determine which logs to examine. An individual Microsoft Q&A report describes an Insider Preview upgrade from build 10.0.26200.5710 failing at 8% with this code, but that report is one user’s case—not evidence that all Windows 11 upgrades showing the code share the same cause. Read the individual report on Microsoft Q&A.

Log locations and availability vary with the Setup phase and failure. Use the full error and extended code to select relevant logs, then compare their timestamps to the BlueBox.log events. Microsoft recommends finding the last occurrence of the result code and reading the messages immediately before it; an isolated code line may not show what caused the failure.

How to investigate the failed upgrade
- Record the full Setup error. Note the result code, any extended code, and the phase or operation shown by Setup or the upgrade report.
- Check BlueBox.log around the failure time. Open
C:WindowsLogsMoSetupBlueBox.logand identify relevant Windows Update and Setup communication. Treat it as one log in the investigation, not a root-cause verdict. - Read the down-level Setup actions. Inspect
C:$Windows.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log. Checksetuperr.logand any relevant phase-specific or rollback logs that are available. Compare timestamps and read the messages preceding the last relevant result-code occurrence. - Analyze the Setup logs with SetupDiag. Get the latest version of Microsoft SetupDiag, then run it from an elevated Command Prompt. Review
SetupDiagResults.logfor the reported failure. SetupDiag can run on the affected PC or analyze exported Setup logs offline. - Act on the identified failure. Use the specific error and log evidence to choose a fix. The code in BlueBox.log alone does not justify removing a driver, deleting files, resetting an update cache, or reinstalling Windows.
How to interpret SetupDiag results
Microsoft describes SetupDiag as a tool for obtaining details about why a Windows upgrade was unsuccessful. It parses Windows Setup logs to help identify the cause; it does not make the diagnosis conclusive when the relevant logs do not establish one. Use the latest version and run it from an elevated Command Prompt, as Microsoft recommends.
If SetupDiag reports multiple failures, Microsoft says the last failure is typically the fatal one. Read that result alongside the underlying Setup log entries and timestamps rather than treating every reported failure as equally decisive. If you exported logs for offline analysis, preserve the log set and its directory structure so the tool can inspect the available evidence.

What can be concluded without the affected PC’s logs
The supported conclusion is limited: BlueBox.log concerns Setup-to-Windows Update communication, and 0x80070002 there is a clue to investigate—not an explanation of the failure. The specific cause cannot be determined from the title or code alone. A defensible diagnosis requires the affected machine’s Setup logs or a SetupDiag report that identifies the relevant failure.
