Windows 11 Home and Pro follow the same support clock for each feature update: Microsoft provides 24 months of servicing for both editions. Moving from Home to Pro does not extend the life of the Windows version already installed. Your real deadline is the end-of-updates date for that specific version, and Microsoft can offer different releases to different devices.

How Windows 11 support is actually counted

Microsoft treats Windows 11 as a series of feature versions rather than one product with a single end date. A version such as 24H2, 25H2 or 26H2 has its own release date and its own end-of-updates date. The edition installed on the computer determines which row applies, but the version number is the first detail to check.

Microsoft’s Windows Lifecycle FAQ describes an annual feature-update cadence. Windows 11 Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations receive 24 months of servicing from the release of each feature update. Enterprise and Education editions are listed with 36 months for comparison. The longer Enterprise and Education period does not apply to ordinary Home or Pro installations.

Servicing is the period during which Microsoft continues delivering the update package for that version. It is not a promise that every computer will be offered the newest release on the same day, and it is not extended merely because a PC has Pro features enabled. Microsoft advises customers to install the latest version before the current one reaches end of servicing so the device remains supported.

Current Windows 11 Home and Pro dates

The table below reflects Microsoft’s Windows 11 release-information table accessed on October 13, 2026. It uses the Home/Pro edition grouping and the dates shown by Microsoft at that time.

Version Availability date Home and Pro end of updates What the date means
26H2 September 29, 2026 October 10, 2028 Latest version listed as available at the research date.
26H1 February 10, 2026 March 14, 2028 Scoped to new devices; not an in-place upgrade for existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs.
25H2 September 30, 2025 October 12, 2027 Microsoft’s recommended destination for 24H2 Home and Pro devices that need continuing monthly updates.
24H2 October 1, 2024 October 13, 2026 Home and Pro support end date corroborated by Microsoft’s 24H2 status notice.
23H2 October 31, 2023 End of updates Home and Pro servicing has already ended.

These dates come from Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information. The 24H2 deadline and the recommended move to 25H2 also appear in the Windows 11 version 24H2 status notice and Microsoft’s Windows message center.

Dates can be revised as Microsoft publishes new lifecycle information. The lifecycle page states that its support dates are shown in Pacific Time, while the release-information table presents ISO-style calendar dates. If two Microsoft pages ever appear to differ by a day, use the date and time convention identified on the page you are consulting rather than silently converting it.

Does Windows 11 Pro get longer support than Home?

No. For the Windows 11 feature versions covered here, Home and Pro both receive the same 24-month servicing period. Pro’s business-oriented capabilities do not add months to the support life of the installed feature version.

Support question Windows 11 Home Windows 11 Pro
Servicing period for each feature version 24 months from release 24 months from release
What sets the deadline? The installed version and its published end-of-updates date The installed version and its published end-of-updates date
Does changing editions extend the current version? No No
Feature-update deferral note in Microsoft’s FAQ Home cannot defer feature updates and typically receives a newer version before the listed end date The cited no-deferral statement is specific to Home; it does not establish a particular Pro policy configuration

If a computer is already running an in-support release, upgrading its edition from Home to Pro may change available management or security features, but it does not reset the servicing clock. The practical decision is therefore about features and administration, not about buying extra time for the current version.

Find the version installed on your PC

Do this before comparing your computer with a lifecycle table. “Windows 11” alone is not precise enough to identify the deadline.

  1. Use Settings: Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Under Windows specifications, read the Version entry, such as 24H2 or 25H2. Note the Edition as well, because the lifecycle grouping distinguishes Home and Pro from other editions.
  3. Use the quick command: Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. The dialog identifies the Windows version and build.
  4. Write down the version exactly. A build number by itself is not a replacement for the feature-version label used in Microsoft’s release table.

Once you have the version, match it to the Home/Pro row in Microsoft’s release-information table. A PC marked 24H2 has a different deadline from one marked 25H2, even if both are called Windows 11 and have the same edition.

What happens when 24H2 reaches end of updates

For Windows 11 Home and Pro version 24H2, Microsoft lists October 13, 2026 as the end-of-updates date. The status notice says affected devices will no longer receive the monthly security and preview updates associated with that version. It also identifies the loss of fixes for known issues, time-zone updates and technical support for the ended version, along with the protections delivered through current monthly security updates.

This is a version-specific notice. It does not mean that every Windows 11 edition or every feature version stops receiving updates on October 13. A 25H2 installation has its own October 12, 2027 date in the release table, while 26H2 has the October 10, 2028 date shown above.

Microsoft recommends moving 24H2 Home and Pro devices to 25H2 to continue receiving monthly security and quality updates. The recommendation is about remaining on a supported feature version; it is not an instruction to purchase Pro.

Update through Windows Update

For an eligible, unmanaged PC, Microsoft says Windows 11 Home and Pro devices running 24H2 receive 25H2 automatically. You can still control when the restart occurs and, where Windows presents the option, postpone the update. The exact offer can depend on device readiness and Microsoft’s release scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save open work and connect the PC to reliable power.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. If the feature update is offered, choose Download and install.
  5. Use the restart controls to select a convenient time. Keep the computer connected while Windows completes the installation.
  6. After the restart, return to Settings > System > About and confirm the new version under Windows specifications.

Microsoft’s 24H2 notice does not promise that every PC will display the same offer immediately. If Windows Update does not show 25H2, record the version currently installed and check whether Microsoft has made the release available to that device. Do not assume that the largest number visible in a news article is the correct in-place path for your computer.

Why a newer version may not be offered

Release scope and device readiness

Microsoft explicitly qualifies feature-update availability by release scope and device readiness. An update can be available in Microsoft’s release table while still not being presented to every PC. Checking Windows Update on the affected machine is more useful than relying on the version number alone.

The 26H1 exception

Version 26H1 is a notable case. Microsoft’s release-information page says it is scoped to new devices and is not designed as an in-place feature update for existing devices. It is not offered as an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2. Therefore, a 24H2 or 25H2 user should not treat 26H1 as the automatic next step simply because “26H1” sounds newer.

Unmanaged versus managed PCs

The automatic 25H2 behavior described in Microsoft’s 24H2 notice applies to unmanaged Home and Pro devices. A PC controlled by an organization can follow different update policies. For a personally managed computer, use the version and offer shown in Windows Update; for a managed computer, the administrator’s deployment schedule may determine when the feature update appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home update controls versus Pro expectations

Microsoft’s lifecycle FAQ specifically says Home cannot defer feature updates and typically receives the next version before the displayed end date. That behavior means a Home user may see Windows move to a newer supported release before the old version’s nominal deadline.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

The same FAQ wording should not be expanded into an unsupported claim about every Pro configuration. Pro’s servicing duration remains 24 months, but the cited Home note does not define all possible Pro deferral settings or organizational policies. If you need a precise Pro deployment schedule, rely on the controls and policy applied to that particular PC rather than assuming the edition label alone predicts the timing.

Planning around the deadline

Use the following sequence when a version is approaching end of updates.

  1. Inventory the version: Confirm the feature-version label and edition in Settings or winver.
  2. Match the date: Compare that label with Microsoft’s current release-information table.
  3. Check Windows Update: Look for the version Microsoft offers to the device, rather than selecting a release solely because it has the highest number.
  4. Schedule the installation: Choose a restart time that will not interrupt work, travel or an important presentation.
  5. Verify afterward: Confirm the feature version after Windows restarts.
  6. Recheck periodically: Microsoft can update release status and dates, so a one-time check is not a permanent guarantee.

Back up important files before any major operating-system change. That is general maintenance advice, not a way to extend servicing: a backup cannot make an ended version supported again.

What the 24-month clock does—and does not—measure

The 24-month period is measured from Microsoft’s release of the feature update, not from the day you bought the computer, activated Windows or first installed that version. Two PCs purchased months apart can therefore share the same version and the same end date. Likewise, changing a license or edition does not create a fresh 24-month period.

Because feature updates arrive annually, several versions can be in service at once. The annual cadence does not mean each computer is upgraded on the anniversary of its purchase. It means Microsoft publishes a new feature version and assigns that version its own servicing window. Always use the published row for the version actually installed.

If Windows Update has not offered the next version

An approaching deadline is a reason to investigate, not a reason to force an unsupported installation. First confirm the current version, then run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. If 25H2 is not shown for a 24H2 PC, the device may not yet be in Microsoft’s rollout scope, may have a readiness issue, or may be governed by an organization’s policy.

For managed computers, contact the administrator rather than changing update settings yourself. For personal computers, continue checking Microsoft’s release-health page and Windows Update. The fact that 26H2 is listed does not make it a universal replacement path, and 26H1 specifically is not an in-place option for existing 24H2 or 25H2 systems.

Examples of how the dates apply

Consider two otherwise identical Home laptops. If one reports 24H2, its listed Home/Pro deadline is October 13, 2026. If the other reports 25H2, its deadline is October 12, 2027. The edition is the same, but the support status differs because the feature versions differ.

Now compare a Home laptop and a Pro desktop both running 26H2. Microsoft lists the same October 10, 2028 Home/Pro end date for both. The Pro desktop may have additional administration features, but those features do not move the date. These examples are why checking only “Home” or “Pro” gives an incomplete answer.

Common misunderstandings about Home and Pro timelines

“Pro means five years of support.”

That is not the Windows 11 Home-versus-Pro rule documented by Microsoft. Both editions receive 24 months for each feature version. Longer periods listed for Enterprise and Education should not be attributed to Pro.

“The Windows 11 product has one end date.”

Windows 11 has separate feature-version deadlines. A PC’s support status depends on whether it is running 23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1 or 26H2, and on the edition grouping shown in the table.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Changing Home to Pro restarts the clock.”

An edition change does not turn an aging 24H2 installation into a newly released version. The deadline follows the installed feature version.

“If a release is listed, every PC can install it.”

Microsoft’s 26H1 guidance disproves that assumption: the release is scoped to new devices and is not an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2. Other feature updates can also depend on readiness and rollout scope.

“End of updates means Windows immediately stops working.”

The Microsoft notice describes the loss of ongoing fixes, security and preview updates, time-zone updates and technical support for the ended version. It does not describe an immediate shutdown of the operating system. The practical risk is continuing to use a version without the protections and maintenance supplied to supported releases.

Choosing between Home and Pro when support is the concern

If your only reason for considering Pro is a longer update window, the lifecycle data does not support that purchase. Home and Pro share the same per-version period, and both use the end date assigned to the installed feature release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an edition for the capabilities your work or administration requires, then keep that edition on a currently supported feature version. A Home user who wants to remain supported should focus on accepting the next eligible feature update. A Pro user should track the same release table and verify what Windows Update offers instead of assuming Pro creates a separate deadline.

Where to verify dates before acting

Use Microsoft’s primary pages because lifecycle information is date-sensitive:

Check the pages again if your installation is close to its deadline, because availability, dates and rollout guidance can change. The reliable question is always: “Which feature version is installed on this PC, and what end-of-updates date does Microsoft currently publish for that version and edition?”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows 11 Pro get longer support than Home?

No. Microsoft gives Windows 11 Home and Pro 24 months of servicing for each feature version. Pro features do not extend that version’s end date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When does my Windows 11 version stop receiving updates?

Find the version in Settings > System > About or with winver, then match it to Microsoft’s Windows 11 release-information table. The deadline depends on the feature version and edition grouping.

What is the Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro end date?

Microsoft lists October 13, 2026 for Home and Pro 24H2. It recommends moving eligible devices to 25H2 to continue monthly security and quality updates.

Will changing from Home to Pro reset the support clock?

No. An edition change does not change the feature version or create a new 24-month servicing period.

Why is 26H1 not offered on my existing PC?

Microsoft says 26H1 is scoped to new devices and is not an in-place feature update from 24H2 or 25H2. Release availability also depends on device readiness and rollout scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens after a version reaches end of updates?

Microsoft says the ended version no longer receives monthly security and preview updates, fixes for known issues, time-zone updates or technical support for that version. Windows does not immediately shut down, but continued use means going without current protections and maintenance.

Can I postpone a feature update?

Microsoft’s FAQ says Home cannot defer feature updates and typically receives a newer version before the listed deadline. Pro timing can depend on the policies applied to that particular PC, especially on managed devices.

Do I need to buy Pro to stay supported?

No. Home and Pro have the same per-version servicing period. Staying supported means installing an eligible, currently supported feature version, not changing editions.

The Bottom Line

Windows 11 Home and Pro both receive 24 months of support per feature version. Check the version shown on your PC, compare it with Microsoft’s current end-of-updates table, and install the eligible release Windows Update offers before that date. Upgrading to Pro does not buy extra servicing time.
