Windows 11 hardware requirements: which older PCs can upgrade?

An older PC can upgrade to Windows 11 through the supported Windows Update route only if it runs Windows 10 version 2004 or later and passes every Windows 11 minimum requirement. The computer’s age is not the deciding factor: the exact processor model, TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics and display all matter. Start with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app, then investigate the specific failed requirement before buying parts or replacing the machine.

What determines whether an older PC can upgrade?

Microsoft treats Windows 11 eligibility as a complete checklist, not a score. A computer that passes six requirements but lacks an approved processor is not eligible for the supported upgrade. Likewise, a compatible CPU does not compensate for missing TPM 2.0 or firmware that cannot provide Secure Boot.

The supported Windows Update path starts from Windows 10 version 2004 or newer. Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Microsoft’s current requirements are listed on its Windows 11 System Requirements page.

Component or condition Windows 11 minimum What it means for an older PC
Processor 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, and on Microsoft’s compatible CPU list Clock speed and core count are properties of the processor as manufactured; adding RAM or storage cannot make an ineligible CPU eligible.
Memory 4 GB RAM or more Some systems can accept more memory, but upgradeability depends on the exact model.
Storage 64 GB or more A larger drive may be installable in some devices; check the manufacturer’s specifications first.
Firmware and boot UEFI firmware and Secure Boot capability Secure Boot may simply be disabled, or the machine may lack the required firmware capability. Those are different cases.
Security module TPM 2.0 The setting may be disabled in firmware, or the hardware may not provide TPM 2.0. There is no universal fix for every model.
Graphics DirectX 12 or later, with a WDDM 2.0 driver The GPU and an appropriate driver both have to meet the baseline.
Display HD (720p), larger than 9 inches diagonally, and 8 bits per color channel This mainly affects unusual displays, small embedded panels and some older specialty devices.
Starting operating system Windows 10 version 2004 or later for Windows Update A qualifying computer running an older Windows release may need to update Windows 10 first.

These are minimums, not a performance guarantee. Individual applications and optional Windows features can require more capable hardware, as Microsoft notes in its Windows 11 specifications.

Check the exact PC before changing anything

Run PC Health Check

Microsoft’s recommended first diagnostic is the free PC Health Check app. Open it, choose Check now in the Windows 11 eligibility area, and review the result. The app reports whether the computer meets the baseline and identifies a failing area when it does not. Follow Microsoft’s PC Health Check instructions for the current interface.

Review Windows Update as a second check

Windows Update also performs an eligibility assessment. A positive assessment does not mean an upgrade offer appears immediately. Microsoft uses a staged rollout and can place a safeguard hold on a device when a known driver or application issue could make the upgrade unreliable.

Recheck after a hardware change

If you install memory or replace a storage drive, run PC Health Check again. Microsoft says Windows Update’s eligibility information can take up to 24 hours to refresh after a hardware change, and the upgrade offer can still arrive later. Its guidance is available at Check eligibility after changing device hardware.

Account for managed computers

On a work- or school-managed PC, do not start an independent upgrade simply because the app says the hardware qualifies. Ask the organization’s IT administrator which assessment, backup process and deployment schedule it supports; management policies, encryption and line-of-business software can affect the approved route.

How to interpret each failed requirement

Processor not on the compatible list

The processor requirement is the hardest stop. A CPU must be at least 1 GHz, have two or more cores and appear on Microsoft’s compatible list. The first two characteristics are inherent to the chip, and the model-list requirement is not changed by installing a faster SSD, adding memory or enabling a firmware option.

Check the exact processor model shown in Settings > System > About or in PC Health Check, then compare it with Microsoft’s current supported list and the computer manufacturer’s documentation. Do not infer eligibility from the brand family or a similar-looking model number; different generations within one family can have different support status.

Rank #2

Too little RAM

Windows 11 requires at least 4 GB of RAM. Microsoft says some computers with less memory may have an upgrade option, but many older laptops use soldered memory or have a low maximum capacity. Look up the exact model’s service manual or specification sheet before purchasing a module. Confirm the memory type, number of slots and maximum supported capacity, and back up important files before opening the machine.

Insufficient storage

The minimum storage capacity is 64 GB. A nearly full drive can also prevent an upgrade even when its nominal capacity is large enough, because Windows needs working space for the installation and rollback files. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for drive size, interface and physical format. Some thin laptops have soldered storage, while desktops and business laptops may accept a replacement SSD.

TPM 2.0 missing or disabled

TPM 2.0 is a security requirement, not merely a performance feature. On some systems it is present but disabled in firmware under a manufacturer-specific name such as a security device or firmware TPM. On others, the motherboard may expose only an older TPM version or none at all.

Enter firmware setup using the key shown during startup (commonly a function key or Delete, but model instructions control), and look for the manufacturer’s security or TPM setting. Change it only after recording the original configuration and confirming that your drive encryption recovery key is available. Enabling security settings can trigger a recovery-key prompt on an encrypted installation. Microsoft’s general requirements page does not establish one remedy that works on every computer, so use the exact manufacturer guidance.

UEFI and Secure Boot

Windows 11 requires UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. A machine may support Secure Boot while having it turned off, or it may boot in legacy BIOS mode without a usable UEFI configuration. The distinction matters: enabling an existing capability can be straightforward, whereas converting a legacy installation or replacing firmware carries more risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the current mode by opening System Information and reading BIOS Mode, then consult the computer maker’s instructions before changing firmware settings. If the system disk uses a partition layout or boot mode that the firmware cannot use after conversion, the PC may stop booting. Make a verified backup and obtain the recovery key before any firmware or partition work.

Graphics and display

The graphics adapter must support DirectX 12 or later and have a WDDM 2.0 driver. Older integrated graphics can fail because of the driver model even when the basic display works in Windows 10. Install only drivers supplied by the computer or graphics manufacturer and confirm that a Windows 11-compatible driver exists; a generic driver that merely produces an image is not proof of compliance.

The display baseline is 720p, larger than 9 inches diagonally, with 8 bits per color channel. Most conventional monitors and laptop panels meet it, but specialized point-of-sale, industrial and very small embedded screens deserve a specific check.

What happens after a PC passes?

Use Windows Update first

When PC Health Check passes and Windows Update offers Windows 11, use the supported upgrade path unless your organization directs otherwise. Save work, connect the computer to reliable power, disconnect unnecessary peripherals and make a current backup. The installation can restart several times.

Do not mistake a delay for a failure

A qualifying result and an absent offer are not contradictory. Staged rollout timing and safeguard holds can delay the notification while Microsoft resolves an application or driver issue. Keep Windows 10 fully updated, review the Windows Update page for a specific notice and wait for the hold to clear rather than repeatedly forcing setup.

Check the result after upgrading

After Windows 11 starts, install available driver and firmware updates from the PC maker, verify that encryption and sign-in work, and test the applications you rely on. Minimum compliance does not guarantee that every vendor utility, peripheral or older application will behave exactly as it did on Windows 10.

When upgrading a component makes sense

Component work is worth considering only when the failed requirement is realistically serviceable on the exact model and the total cost and effort are lower than replacing the PC. Use this decision sequence:

  • 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2x2) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, HP Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone
  • Windows 11 OS, Dale Blue
  1. Record the exact model, processor, installed RAM, drive capacity, firmware mode and PC Health Check failure.
  2. Confirm upgrade limits in the manufacturer’s service documentation, not in a generic parts listing.
  3. Price the complete change, including a compatible part, installation, backup media and any recovery-key or reinstallation work.
  4. Check that the graphics driver and processor will still qualify; fixing RAM or storage cannot cure a disallowed CPU.
  5. After the change, run PC Health Check and allow up to 24 hours for Windows Update’s eligibility information to refresh.

RAM and storage are the most plausible upgrades because Microsoft identifies them as potentially replaceable on some devices. TPM and Secure Boot require model-specific investigation. Processor eligibility is generally a replacement decision rather than a component upgrade, because the CPU model itself determines compliance.

Why forcing Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware is risky

Microsoft says installing Windows 11 on a device that misses the minimum requirements is not recommended. Its warning explains that the computer may malfunction or have compatibility problems, Microsoft does not support the installation, and updates—including security updates—are not guaranteed. Microsoft also states that damage caused by incompatibility is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Read the full warning at Windows 11 on devices that don’t meet minimum system requirements.

That risk is different from a temporary rollout delay on a fully eligible PC. A safeguard hold is Microsoft withholding an offer while it addresses a known issue; an unsupported installation is a deliberate move outside the documented hardware baseline. Treat online bypass instructions as unsupported configuration changes, not as an equivalent upgrade path.

Rollback and the Windows 10 support deadline

If an unsupported upgrade causes problems, Microsoft’s built-in Go back option is available for 10 days after the upgrade. After that period, the files required for the rollback are removed. The option appears under Settings > System > Recovery when it is still available.

Rolling back does not restore Windows 10’s former support status. Microsoft ended general Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. The end-of-support date is documented in Microsoft’s PC Health Check guidance. Plan a supported Windows 11 upgrade, a replacement computer or another supported operating system rather than treating rollback as a long-term security solution.

Replacement versus upgrade: a practical choice

Situation Most defensible next step Reason
Only RAM is below 4 GB and the model has accessible slots Verify the maximum capacity and consider a memory upgrade Memory can be serviceable on some systems, but compatibility and labor are model-specific.
Only storage is below 64 GB and the drive is replaceable Check the supported drive format and plan a backup or cloning process A larger drive may solve the capacity requirement, but it does not fix another failed check.
TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot is disabled but supported Follow the manufacturer’s firmware instructions Enabling an existing capability differs from adding hardware that the platform cannot provide.
Processor is not on Microsoft’s compatible list Compare the cost of replacement with a compatible computer RAM, storage and firmware changes do not alter the CPU model’s eligibility.
Several requirements fail or the device is difficult to service Favor a supported replacement system Multiple repairs increase cost and risk while leaving application and driver questions unresolved.

Microsoft does not establish universal component prices or compatibility outside the individual model. Obtain a model-specific quote and verify that any replacement configuration explicitly meets the current Windows 11 requirements before purchase.

A concise eligibility checklist

  • Windows 10 version 2004 or later is installed for the Windows Update route.
  • The processor is at least 1 GHz, has two or more cores and appears on Microsoft’s compatible list.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM is installed, with upgradeability confirmed if it is not.
  • At least 64 GB of storage is available and the drive has enough free working space.
  • UEFI firmware and Secure Boot capability are present.
  • TPM 2.0 is available and enabled where required.
  • The graphics hardware supports DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • The display is at least 720p, larger than 9 inches and 8 bits per color channel.
  • PC Health Check reports eligibility, and Windows Update has no active safeguard hold.
  • A current backup and any device-encryption recovery key are available before changing firmware or installing the upgrade.

The bottom line for an older PC

Some older computers can upgrade, but age is only a rough clue. The decisive evidence is the exact model’s processor support, TPM 2.0 and UEFI/Secure Boot capability, plus the memory, storage, graphics and display checks. Run PC Health Check first; repair only requirements the manufacturer confirms are serviceable; and replace the computer when the processor or platform is fundamentally outside Microsoft’s supported baseline. Avoid forcing Windows 11 onto ineligible hardware, particularly now that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
