Windows 11 Handwriting Panel Auto-Completion: What You Can Configure and Where

Short answer: Windows 11 documents a text-suggestion switch for physical-keyboard typing, not a separate auto-completion switch for handwriting-panel input. Turn on Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard at Settings > Time & language > Typing if you want predictions while using a hardware keyboard. For handwriting, open the touch keyboard’s layout menu and select Handwriting panel; Microsoft documents pen and fingertip input there, but its current guidance does not confirm a handwriting-specific completion toggle.

This distinction matters because Windows has three related but separate features: physical-keyboard text suggestions, the touch keyboard’s handwriting layout, and text prediction in the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK). The steps below show which setting controls each one, how to test the result, and which privacy controls affect words learned from typing and inking.

Which Windows 11 feature are you trying to configure?

“Auto-completion” can describe several Windows behaviors. Use the table to identify the feature before changing a setting.

Input method What Windows calls it Setting or entry point Hardware What is established
Hardware keyboard Text suggestions Settings > Time & language > Typing Any physical keyboard Microsoft documents a switch named Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard, plus an optional Multilingual text suggestions switch.
Touch keyboard handwriting Handwriting panel Touch keyboard layout selector Compatible touchscreen; pen or fingertip Microsoft documents the panel as an input layout. The current guidance does not name a separate auto-completion switch for handwriting-panel input.
On-Screen Keyboard Text Prediction OSK Options menu No physical keyboard required OSK has its own prediction option. Microsoft’s documented prediction languages for OSK are English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.

Do not assume that enabling one row enables the others. A suggestion setting described for physical-keyboard typing is not proof that the handwriting panel will show completions, and the OSK language list should not be applied to handwriting recognition.

Enable text suggestions for a physical keyboard

If your goal is word prediction while you type on a laptop or desktop keyboard, use Microsoft’s documented path in Enable text suggestions in Windows.

  1. Open Start > Settings, or press Windows logo key + I.
  2. Select Time & language, then choose Typing.
  3. Turn on Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard.
  4. If you regularly type in more than one language, turn on Multilingual text suggestions as well. This is an additional option, not a handwriting-panel control.
  5. Open an application with a normal text field. Microsoft’s examples include a Teams chat, a Word document and a browser comment box.
  6. Type several letters. Microsoft describes the behavior this way: “Words are predicted based upon your spelling; as you type more letters, new and more accurate suggestions appear.”
  7. Select a suggestion with the mouse or touch. You can also move through the suggestions with the arrow keys and press Enter.
  8. To close the suggestion strip without choosing a word, press Esc or click outside the suggestions window.

The setting applies to text suggestions generated while Windows recognizes input as coming from a physical keyboard. If suggestions do not appear, verify that the cursor is in an editable text field and test another application before changing unrelated inking settings.

Open and use the Windows 11 handwriting panel

The handwriting panel is part of the touch keyboard rather than a separate desktop application. Microsoft’s Get to know the touch keyboard guidance describes it as a layout that accepts either a pen or a fingertip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the insertion point in an editable field, such as a document, message or browser comment.
  2. Open the touch keyboard from its taskbar icon. If the icon is not visible, the taskbar’s touch-keyboard option may need to be enabled in your Windows taskbar settings; the exact menu can vary by Windows update and device.
  3. In the touch keyboard, open the layout selector. Choose Handwriting panel.
  4. Write in the panel with a compatible stylus, or use your finger if the touchscreen supports it.
  5. Review the recognized text and insert it into the active field. Recognition and the controls shown can vary with the application, language and Windows build.

Enable fingertip writing

A pen is optional when the hardware supports touch handwriting. To tell Windows to accept a finger:

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  2. Expand the Handwriting section.
  3. Select Write with your fingertip.

Menu names and availability can differ after Windows updates and across touchscreen hardware. If the Handwriting section or fingertip option is absent, the device may not expose the required touch or pen capability; do not treat the physical-keyboard suggestion switch as a substitute.

Is there a handwriting-panel auto-completion switch?

Microsoft’s current documentation reviewed for this configuration does not establish a distinct switch labeled auto-completion, text suggestions or prediction specifically for the touch keyboard’s Handwriting panel. The documented switch at Settings > Time & language > Typing is explicitly for “typing on the physical keyboard.”

That means you should not promise that turning on physical-keyboard suggestions will add a completion bar to handwriting input. The panel may recognize and convert writing, but the cited Microsoft guidance does not define a separate user-controlled completion feature for that layout. If your Windows build displays an additional handwriting option, follow the label shown on that device; interface details can change with updates and hardware, and the option is not confirmed by the referenced guidance as a universal Windows 11 setting.

How to test what your device actually supports

  1. Write a short phrase in the Handwriting panel and insert it into a text field.
  2. Repeat the same phrase in a standard application after enabling physical-keyboard text suggestions.
  3. Observe whether a suggestion strip appears only for keyboard typing, only after text has been inserted, or in both contexts.
  4. Record the Windows version, application and input language if behavior differs. This helps distinguish an application-specific feature from a Windows setting.

Keep the result specific to the input method you tested. A suggestion bar in Word, a browser or a messaging app is not evidence that every handwriting surface supports the same behavior.

Requirements and compatibility checks

Before troubleshooting a missing panel, check the input chain rather than assuming a prediction setting is at fault. Handwriting-panel use requires a text field, the touch keyboard, and a device that exposes touchscreen input. A compatible stylus is useful but not mandatory when fingertip writing is available. A desktop with only a conventional monitor and keyboard cannot provide the touch-keyboard handwriting layout simply because physical-keyboard suggestions are enabled.

  • Confirm that the insertion point is active in an editable field before opening the touch keyboard.
  • Check that Windows exposes a touch keyboard and that the layout selector includes Handwriting panel.
  • If using a pen, verify that it is compatible with the touchscreen; Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one universal stylus standard or brand.
  • If using a finger, enable Write with your fingertip and confirm that the screen supports touch.
  • Use the same language or keyboard layout consistently while comparing results, because recognition and suggestions can change with the active input context.

These checks separate a hardware or interface limitation from an unavailable completion feature. They also prevent an unnecessary accessory purchase: a stylus is optional where fingertip input works.

Do not confuse handwriting with On-Screen Keyboard prediction

The Windows On-Screen Keyboard is a separate accessibility keyboard. Its prediction control is documented in Use the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) to type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the On-Screen Keyboard from Windows accessibility tools or by searching for On-Screen Keyboard.
  2. Open the OSK’s Options.
  3. Look for the Use Text Prediction option and enable it if required.

Microsoft lists English, French, Italian, German and Spanish as the documented OSK prediction languages. That list belongs to OSK text prediction; it is not a confirmed language list for handwriting recognition or touch-keyboard suggestions. Likewise, changing OSK prediction does not configure the Handwriting panel.

Language settings and multilingual typing

For a physical keyboard, the Multilingual text suggestions switch under Settings > Time & language > Typing is intended for people who type in multiple languages. Enable it only after enabling the main physical-keyboard suggestion switch if you want predictions across supported language contexts.

Handwriting recognition uses the active input language and the recognition resources available to the device. The cited touch-keyboard guidance confirms the panel and its pen/fingertip input, but it does not provide a universal handwriting auto-completion language matrix. If recognition is poor, check the active keyboard or language layout before assuming that a missing suggestion control is the cause.

What the related settings do—and do not do

Several controls sound similar but have narrow scopes. Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard affects hardware-keyboard typing; it is not a master switch for every Windows input surface. Multilingual text suggestions extends the documented physical-keyboard suggestion scenario for people working in multiple languages; it does not certify handwriting support for those languages. Use Text Prediction belongs to the OSK and has its own documented language list. Finally, the custom word list and diagnostics controls concern personalization and service improvement, not the visibility of a handwriting completion bar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A common pitfall is to see a prediction strip in one editor and conclude that Windows has enabled it everywhere. Apps can provide their own editing behavior, while Windows may expose only recognition in another surface. Compare a Teams chat, Word document and browser comment, then report the application and input method when behavior differs.

Word learning and privacy controls

Windows can learn from words you type or write. Microsoft states that “Windows 11 creates a custom word list from words you type or write to improve typing and inking accuracy.” The custom list and Microsoft’s service-improvement setting are separate controls.

Clear or disable the custom inking and typing word list

Use the controls described in Microsoft’s Speech, voice activation, inking, typing, and privacy guidance:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization.
  3. Find Custom inking and typing word list.
  4. Turn the feature off if you do not want Windows to maintain that custom list. Microsoft says disabling it clears the list.

This action affects the learned custom vocabulary. It does not create a handwriting-panel completion switch and does not disable every form of recognition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop using typing and handwriting data to improve services

Microsoft documents a different control in Diagnostics, feedback, and privacy in Windows:

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
  2. Locate Improve inking and typing.
  3. Turn it off to stop Microsoft using typing and handwriting information to improve typing and writing services for all customers.

Turning off this diagnostics setting is not the same as clearing the custom word list. If you want both outcomes, review both locations independently.

Troubleshooting when suggestions or handwriting do not work

The physical-keyboard suggestion switch is missing

  • Confirm that you are in Settings > Time & language > Typing, not the Pen & Windows Ink page or OSK Options.
  • Check that Windows identifies the input as a physical keyboard and that you are testing in an editable field.
  • Interface labels can move after updates, so use Settings search for “text suggestions” if the page layout differs.

Suggestions work in one app but not another

  • Test a Teams chat, Word document and browser comment, the application types Microsoft uses as examples.
  • Some apps provide their own editor or prediction behavior. Compare results in a plain text field before changing Windows privacy settings.
  • Use the arrow keys and Enter to select a suggestion, or press Esc to dismiss it; a suggestion may be present but easy to overlook.

The handwriting panel does not appear

  • Place the cursor in a text field before opening the touch keyboard.
  • Use the touch keyboard’s layout selector and choose Handwriting panel, rather than launching the On-Screen Keyboard.
  • Check whether the device has a touchscreen and whether Windows exposes pen or touch input. A compatible stylus is optional only when fingertip writing is supported.
  • If the panel layout or fingertip option is absent, review Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting and account for differences caused by the Windows build or hardware.

Recognition is inaccurate or uses the wrong language

  • Verify the active keyboard or language layout before testing again.
  • Write distinct letters with enough spacing for the recognition area.
  • Test in another application to rule out an editor-specific conversion issue.
  • Remember that the documented OSK prediction languages do not define handwriting recognition coverage.

You expected a handwriting completion bar

Recheck which input method produced the text. The physical-keyboard switch is documented for hardware-keyboard typing, while the Handwriting panel is documented as an input layout. Microsoft’s current guidance does not confirm a universal handwriting-specific auto-completion toggle, so the absence of such a control is not necessarily a configuration error.

Choose the setting that matches your goal

Your goal Use this path What to expect
Predictions while typing on a laptop or desktop keyboard Settings > Time & language > Typing > Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard Suggestions can be selected with a mouse, touch, arrow keys and Enter; Esc dismisses them.
Writing directly on a touchscreen Touch keyboard layout selector > Handwriting panel Pen or fingertip input is supported where the device exposes it. A separate completion switch is not confirmed in current guidance.
Writing with a finger instead of a pen Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting > Write with your fingertip Availability depends on touchscreen hardware and Windows build.
Predictions on the accessibility keyboard On-Screen Keyboard > Options > Use Text Prediction Separate from both the touch-keyboard Handwriting panel and physical-keyboard suggestions; documented languages are English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.
Remove learned words Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization > Custom inking and typing word list Turning it off clears the custom list according to Microsoft.

Practical configuration checklist

  • Decide whether you need predictions for a physical keyboard, handwriting recognition, or OSK typing.
  • For a physical keyboard, enable the documented text-suggestion switch under Time & language > Typing.
  • For handwriting, open the touch keyboard and choose Handwriting panel.
  • Enable Write with your fingertip only if you want finger input and the device supports it.
  • Use Multilingual text suggestions for multilingual physical-keyboard typing, not as a handwriting-panel setting.
  • Keep the custom word-list control separate from the diagnostics control when making privacy choices.
  • Test in more than one text field and note the application and language before concluding that a Windows setting failed.

Final pitfalls to avoid

  • Do not launch OSK when you need the touch keyboard’s handwriting layout; they are separate Windows features.
  • Do not treat the five OSK prediction languages as a promise about handwriting recognition languages.
  • Do not delete the custom word list expecting a new completion bar; that action only removes learned vocabulary.
  • Do not infer a universal Windows behavior from one app, one Windows build or one input language.
  • Do not buy a stylus solely to obtain handwriting input if your touchscreen already supports fingertip writing.

Can I use the Handwriting panel without a stylus?

Yes, when the touchscreen supports it. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting and select Write with your fingertip. A compatible pen remains optional, not universally required.

Why do suggestions appear in Word but not in handwriting input?

The physical-keyboard setting controls hardware-keyboard typing, while the Handwriting panel is a separate touch-keyboard layout. An app may also provide its own editor behavior, so a result in Word does not establish support in every input surface.

Is OSK Text Prediction the same as handwriting completion?

No. OSK Text Prediction is configured from the On-Screen Keyboard’s Options menu. Microsoft documents English, French, Italian, German and Spanish for that OSK feature; the list should not be generalized to handwriting recognition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove words Windows learned from my writing?

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization > Custom inking and typing word list and turn it off. Microsoft says disabling that control clears the custom list.

How do I stop Microsoft using typing and handwriting data to improve services?

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and turn off Improve inking and typing. This is separate from the custom word-list control.

What should I test when handwriting recognition is inaccurate?

Check the active keyboard or language layout, write clearly in the panel, and compare another editable app. Record the Windows version, app and language, because recognition and available controls can vary by build, application and device.

The Bottom Line

Configure the feature that matches the input method: enable physical-keyboard text suggestions under Settings > Time & language > Typing, choose Handwriting panel from the touch keyboard for pen or fingertip writing, or use OSK > Options > Use Text Prediction for the accessibility keyboard. Microsoft does not currently document a universal handwriting-panel auto-completion switch. Keep the custom word-list and diagnostics controls separate, and test in the exact app and language you use.
