Windows 11 uses the word “compression” for two different jobs. Drive compression applies a storage-saving setting to the whole OS drive. ZIP compression creates a separate archive containing selected files or folders. The correct procedure depends on whether you need more room on the computer or a package to store and transfer.

What “compress” means in Windows 11
Before changing anything, identify which result you want. The Compress this drive to save disk space option changes how Windows stores data on the selected drive. It is intended for reducing local disk usage, particularly when the system drive is short on room. It does not create a ZIP file that you can send to someone or attach to an email.
Recommended Free Tools
A ZIP archive is a separate file or folder made from the items you select. It is useful for bundling documents, photos, or another folder for storage or transfer. Creating a ZIP does not turn on compression for the entire operating-system drive.

| Question | Drive compression | ZIP archive |
|---|---|---|
| What is selected? | The OS drive, usually C: | One or more chosen files or folders |
| What is produced? | A drive-level Windows setting | A separate compressed (zipped) folder |
| Main purpose | Free local storage | Bundle items for storage or transfer |
| Where is the result? | On the same drive, with the setting applied | In the source item’s location as a new zipped folder |
| How is it reversed? | Clear the drive-compression checkbox and apply the change | Extract or delete the ZIP like any other file |
These are independent features. You do not need to create a ZIP before enabling drive compression, and enabling drive compression does not automatically archive your personal files.
What to check before enabling drive compression
- Confirm the target. The procedure below is for the Windows OS drive. In many installations that drive is C:, but check the name and letter shown under This PC rather than assuming.
- Know what the setting does. Microsoft states that the action does not delete the drive’s contents and that users should not experience problems opening and saving files from the compressed drive.
- Do not expect a guaranteed number. Microsoft’s consumer guidance does not give a typical percentage or fixed amount of space recovered. The result depends on the files and configuration on the computer.
- Choose the right goal. If you only need to package a handful of files, use a ZIP archive instead. If the problem is accumulated temporary data or cloud files that do not need to remain fully local, Storage Sense or OneDrive Files On-Demand may be more appropriate.
How to enable compression on the Windows 11 OS drive
- Open File Explorer. Use the File Explorer app from the taskbar or Start menu.
- Open This PC. In the navigation pane, select This PC so the computer’s drives are visible.
- Open the OS drive’s properties. Right-click the drive that contains Windows, usually labeled C:, and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab. The drive’s basic information and storage options appear there.
- Turn on the compression option. Select Compress this drive to save disk space.
- Apply the setting. Select Apply, then select OK. Windows applies the drive-level setting.
The complete path is This PC > OS drive > Properties > General > Compress this drive to save disk space > Apply > OK. If you opened the properties for a different drive, the checkbox will apply to that selected drive instead, so verify the drive letter before confirming.
What happens after you select Apply
The command changes the selected drive’s compression setting; it is not a move, deletion, or ZIP-export operation. Existing contents remain on the drive. Microsoft’s guidance specifically says that the action does not delete the contents and that opening and saving files from the compressed drive should not cause problems.

Drive compression also does not replace backups. A compressed drive still contains the same important documents and system data, so keep your normal backup routine.
How to turn drive compression off
You can reverse the setting from the same Properties page:
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Right-click the compressed OS drive and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, clear Compress this drive to save disk space.
- Select Apply, then OK.
This is the inverse of the enabling procedure. Make sure you clear the checkbox for the same drive on which compression was enabled; changing another drive’s properties will not reverse the original setting.
How to create a ZIP file instead
Use ZIP creation when you want one portable package containing selected files or a folder. Windows 11 includes the command in File Explorer:

- Browse to the file or folder you want to package.
- Right-click the item.
- Select Show more options.
- Choose Send to, then Compressed (zipped) folder.
Windows creates the zipped folder in the same location as the original item. You can then rename or move that zipped folder like other files. The original files remain in place; the ZIP is an additional archive. If you wanted to free space on the OS drive rather than create a package, this command addresses a different problem.
Other built-in ways to reclaim local storage
OneDrive Files On-Demand
OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave a smaller placeholder on the local hard drive while the full file remains in OneDrive. This is useful when files need to appear in File Explorer but do not all need a full local copy. It is a cloud-storage feature, not a prerequisite for enabling drive compression and not the same as making a ZIP archive.
Storage Sense
Storage Sense can automatically remove selected unneeded items, including temporary files. It addresses cleanup rather than changing how the entire OS drive stores its contents. If temporary data is the main source of the space shortage, review Storage Sense before applying a drive-wide setting.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing a folder instead of the OS drive
The drive-level checkbox is found in drive Properties. If you right-click an individual file or folder, you are looking at item-level commands, not the OS-drive setting. Return to This PC, select the drive itself, and open its Properties.

Expecting a ZIP file to appear
Drive compression does not create a visible zipped folder. To produce one, use Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder on the selected file or folder.
Assuming a fixed amount of space will be recovered
There is no universal figure in Microsoft’s guidance for this procedure. The result depends on what is stored on the drive and the computer’s configuration. Do not judge the option by an advertised percentage; check the available-space figure on your own PC.
Worrying that files were erased
The setting is not a deletion command. Microsoft says the drive’s contents are not deleted and that opening and saving files from the compressed drive should continue to work.
Looking for the wrong solution to a full drive
If compression does not provide enough room for your needs, consider whether temporary-file cleanup through Storage Sense or smaller local copies through OneDrive Files On-Demand better match the cause. These are separate tools, so enabling one does not automatically configure the others.

Trying to undo the setting from the wrong location
Reversal uses the same drive Properties page. Open This PC, right-click the affected drive, clear the checkbox on the General tab, and select Apply > OK.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Drive compression, performance, and expectations
Microsoft’s support guidance does not provide a general performance benchmark for a particular Windows 11 computer. It says users should not experience problems opening and saving files from the compressed drive, but that statement is not a quantified speed guarantee. Performance and the amount of space recovered can differ by system and by the files stored on it.
For that reason, enable the setting when the storage benefit is more important than relying on a specific predicted result. If you need a measurable amount of additional capacity for an update, check the available space after the setting is applied and use Storage Sense or OneDrive Files On-Demand as separate options if more room is still required.

A practical decision checklist
- Do you need to reduce local use across the Windows drive? Open the OS drive’s Properties and enable Compress this drive to save disk space.
- Do you need to bundle selected items for transfer or storage? Create a Compressed (zipped) folder from the item’s context menu.
- Do you want files visible in File Explorer without every full copy stored locally? Review OneDrive Files On-Demand.
- Do temporary or unneeded items appear to be consuming space? Review Storage Sense.
- Do you want to undo drive compression? Return to the same drive Properties page, clear the checkbox, and apply the change.
- Are you expecting a guaranteed number of gigabytes or a benchmarked speed change? Microsoft does not establish either figure for this consumer procedure.
Key facts to remember
Windows 11’s drive-compression control is located at This PC > OS drive Properties > General. Select Compress this drive to save disk space, then choose Apply > OK. The action keeps the drive’s contents in place, and Microsoft says opening and saving files should not present problems. To reverse it, clear the same checkbox and apply the change.
ZIP creation is a different workflow: right-click a file or folder, choose Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and Windows creates the archive in the original location. Use drive compression for a drive-wide storage goal and ZIP compression for a selected package. Neither Microsoft’s guidance nor the procedure promises a fixed amount of space recovered or a particular performance result.
