Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate: A Smarter Balance for a 120Hz Laptop

Windows 11’s Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can switch a compatible laptop display between refresh rates as your activity changes, aiming to keep scrolling and inking smooth while using a lower rate for less demanding tasks. It is not available on every 120Hz laptop, and it can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games.

What Dynamic Refresh Rate changes

A 120Hz screen can refresh up to 120 times per second, which can make movement such as scrolling look smoother than at a lower refresh rate. A higher refresh rate also uses more display power. DRR is Windows 11’s automatic option for adjusting the rate to what you are doing: Microsoft describes it as lowering refresh during static tasks to save power. Microsoft’s explanation of refresh-rate settings does not promise a specific battery-life increase, so the real-world effect depends on the laptop and workload.

DRR is different from manually choosing a fixed refresh rate. With a fixed lower rate, the display stays at that setting until you change it; DRR adjusts automatically when supported. Microsoft says DRR requires Windows 11. Its documentation does not support using the feature on Windows 10.

How to turn on DRR in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Look for Dynamic refresh rate and turn it on if the option is available.
  3. If you want a fixed rate instead, select the rate under Choose a refresh rate. A lower fixed rate may reduce display power use, but motion may look less smooth.

Names and available controls can vary with Windows version and hardware. Microsoft’s setup instructions are on its Advanced display settings support page.

Why the DRR toggle may be missing

A laptop being advertised with a 120Hz display does not by itself guarantee DRR support. Microsoft specifies a display refresh rate of at least 120Hz and variable refresh rate (VRR) support as requirements. The built-in display and hardware must also expose the option to Windows.

If the toggle is absent, check the Advanced display page for the laptop’s available refresh-rate options and consult the laptop maker’s specifications for its built-in display. If those do not establish VRR support, the 120Hz label alone is not enough to confirm compatibility. Microsoft’s requirements are listed in its DRR documentation.

DRR, a fixed rate, or no change?

Choice What happens Best fit Trade-off
Dynamic Refresh Rate Windows adjusts refresh rate according to activity, if the hardware and display support it. People who want smoothness when it helps without keeping the display at a high rate constantly. Requires Windows 11 and compatible VRR hardware; may affect some games’ maximum refresh rate.
Manually selected fixed rate The display remains at the chosen refresh rate until you change it. People prioritizing battery power or who want a consistent rate. A lower rate can make scrolling and other motion look less smooth; Microsoft does not quantify the power saving.
Leave the current setting unchanged The existing refresh-rate configuration remains in place. People satisfied with their current balance or who do not have DRR available. Does not enable automatic adjustment through DRR.

These are display-setting choices, not guarantees of a particular battery runtime. Microsoft describes the power benefit qualitatively rather than giving a laptop-specific percentage or number of extra hours.

What to do if DRR affects a game

Microsoft says DRR should not affect games designed for VRR, but it may limit the maximum refresh rate of other games. If a game appears capped below the display’s expected rate, Microsoft recommends disabling DRR as a mitigation. Turn it off in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, then check whether the game’s refresh behavior changes.
