Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most Windows 11 PCs, start with Windows Update. It delivers Microsoft’s recommended driver updates and can install them automatically. Use the computer or component manufacturer’s official support site when Windows Update cannot find a needed driver, the device has a specific problem, or the manufacturer provides a model-specific package that is required for compatibility. Treat Optional driver updates as targeted fixes, not a checklist, and never choose a package solely because its displayed date is newer.
The short answer
Windows Update is the safest default for a healthy Windows 11 installation. Microsoft Support describes automatic Windows Update delivery as the best way to obtain drivers for most hardware. Recommended drivers are selected for the installed system and can be installed without manual searching.

The manufacturer’s site is the exception path. Check it when a device is missing, malfunctioning, unsupported by Windows Update, or dependent on a computer-maker package for features such as hotkeys, power management, firmware coordination, or a custom graphics configuration. Download only from the official support page for the exact computer or component model.
- Ordinary maintenance: leave Windows Update enabled and install recommended updates.
- A listed Optional driver: install it only when its description plausibly addresses a known need.
- Missing driver or unresolved fault: identify the exact hardware and use the official manufacturer support page.
- Surface or another Microsoft-branded device: follow Microsoft’s model-specific driver and firmware package guidance.
- Work-managed PC: follow your organization’s deployment policy instead of overriding approved drivers.
What Windows Update actually does
Windows does not simply pick the package with the newest-looking date. Driver packages carry targeting and matching information that Windows uses to determine whether they apply to a particular hardware identity, Windows edition and build, architecture, and device configuration. Microsoft’s driver-selection documentation also describes ranking: a package classified as critical or automatic can outrank a newer package classified as optional.

That is why an older date in Windows Update is not automatically evidence of an inferior driver. The date displayed in a driver listing is provider-supplied descriptive information; it is not a guaranteed release date or a quality score. A manufacturer can publish a package with a recent date while Windows continues to offer a different package because the latter is the better match for your installation.
For routine updates, Windows Update also has a practical advantage: it understands the Windows 11 servicing context and can deliver a package through the normal update, restart, and recovery mechanisms. You do not have to guess which of several model variants applies.
What a manufacturer package adds
A computer maker or component maker can publish packages that are more specific than the broadly distributed driver Windows Update offers. A laptop manufacturer may bundle a graphics, chipset, audio, camera, card-reader, touchpad, or wireless package with settings designed for that exact model. A separately purchased graphics adapter, printer, docking station, or other peripheral may have a support page containing a driver that Windows Update has not yet distributed.

Specificity does not make every manufacturer package automatically better. The package still has to match the exact model, hardware revision, and Windows 11 version. An incompatible package can cause failed installation, missing features, instability, or a rollback to the previous driver. The manufacturer route is therefore a controlled fallback, not a reason to replace every driver that Windows Update installed.

How to use Windows Update safely
Install normal recommended updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates and allow Windows to download and install recommended updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it. A driver may not become active until the restart is complete.
- After restarting, test the device you rely on most: connect to Wi-Fi, play audio, wake the display, print a page, or use the external device that prompted the update.
Keep the computer connected to reliable power during a firmware or driver installation. If Windows reports that an update failed, record the update name and error code before trying a different package; that information helps distinguish a transient installation problem from a wrong-driver problem.
Review Optional driver updates
Optional drivers require deliberate approval. Microsoft Support states that “Optional drivers aren’t installed automatically.” To view them:
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand the driver section and read each device name and version.
- Select a package only if it matches a concrete problem, compatibility requirement, or documented manufacturer instruction.
- Choose Download and install, then restart if prompted.
Do not install every item simply because it is listed. If the PC is stable and the description does not address a known issue, leaving the optional package unselected is a valid choice.
When to move to the manufacturer’s site
Start with the exact identity
Do not search by a family name alone. Record the computer’s full model and, where relevant, its service tag or product number. For an add-in component or peripheral, record the manufacturer, model, hardware revision, and connection type. In Windows, the device name shown in Settings or Device Manager can help, but an unknown device may require the hardware ID shown in its properties.

Also record the installed Windows 11 edition and build. A package intended for a different Windows version, architecture, or model revision may install incorrectly or refuse to install.
Use the official support workflow
- Open the manufacturer’s official support domain by typing it yourself or using documentation that came with the device. Microsoft Support advises avoiding driver downloads from any site other than the manufacturer’s official site.
- Enter the exact model, service tag, or product number rather than choosing a similar-looking model.
- Filter the results for Windows 11 and the correct 64-bit architecture when that option is provided.
- Read the package notes. Check prerequisites, whether the package includes firmware, whether an earlier version must be removed, and whether a restart is required.
- Save the downloaded installer and note its version and publication date before running it.
- Create a restore point or confirm that Windows recovery is available, particularly before a graphics, storage-controller, network, or firmware update.
- Close applications, run the installer as directed, and restart even if the installer does not insist on it.
- Test the original symptom and confirm in the device’s properties that the intended driver version is active.
For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, the computer maker is usually the first manufacturer to consult because its package may coordinate several components. For a separately installed component, use that component maker’s official support page when the computer maker does not provide a package or directs you elsewhere.
Why the manufacturer’s date can look newer
A newer displayed date is not a universal tie-breaker. Microsoft says driver providers can choose the date associated with a package, and Windows uses targeting data and ranking rules when selecting among applicable packages. Consequently, a manufacturer page can show a recent date while Windows Update offers an older-looking package that is classified as recommended or automatic for your hardware.
Compare packages on more than date:
- Hardware match: does the package name the exact model or device ID?
- Windows compatibility: does it support your Windows 11 edition, build, and architecture?
- Purpose: does its change description address your symptom or add a required feature?
- Distribution status: is Windows presenting it as recommended, or only as an optional package?
- Recovery path: can you roll back or uninstall it if the result is worse?
A package that is newer but aimed at another revision is not a better choice. Conversely, a model-specific package may be appropriate even when its date is not newer, if the manufacturer documents a fix that Windows Update has not delivered.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Unknown device or missing functionality
Run Windows Update first. If the device remains unidentified, note the device name or hardware ID and look up the exact computer or component model on the official support site. Install the chipset or platform package first when the manufacturer’s instructions specify an order; those packages can allow Windows to identify other devices correctly.
A driver installed but the device still fails
Restart once, then check whether the failure affects only one application or the entire device. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, use Windows’ driver rollback option in the device’s properties when it is available, or uninstall the update according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not install several competing packages in succession without recording which version produced each result.
Graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, or docking problems
These devices often depend on coordinated packages. Check the computer maker’s support page for a model-specific package before replacing it with a generic component package. If the computer maker documents a newer component package from the component manufacturer, follow that instruction and keep the previous installer available for recovery.
The installation fails or Windows reinstalls another driver
Confirm the model, Windows build, and architecture again. Remove only software the manufacturer’s instructions identify as conflicting; indiscriminate driver removal can leave the system less usable. If Windows Update repeatedly offers a different package, that may reflect its applicability and ranking rules rather than an error. Capture the failure code and consult the manufacturer’s support instructions instead of forcing an unrelated package.

Special case: managed work computers
On an organization-managed device, the locally visible Windows Update list is not the whole policy. Administrators may approve, defer, test, or deploy drivers through management tools. Microsoft’s Windows Autopatch guidance recommends Automatic mode for standard OEM devices that have not recently experienced driver or hardware problems caused by Windows Updates; administrators can review other and optional drivers. That guidance is for managed deployment, not a blanket instruction for home PCs.
If your employer manages the computer, do not bypass the approved channel with a manufacturer installer unless IT directs you to do so. An individually installed driver can be replaced at the next managed update or create a support state your organization cannot reproduce.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing every Optional driver: optional means you must decide; it does not mean universally necessary.
- Choosing by date alone: provider-set dates and Windows ranking make date an incomplete signal.
- Using third-party driver aggregators: Microsoft advises obtaining outside downloads only from the hardware manufacturer’s official site.
- Assuming Device Manager’s automatic search is the best source: Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance points first to Windows Update, then to the manufacturer when Windows Update cannot provide a suitable package.
- Using a package for a similar model: close product names can hide different hardware revisions.
- Skipping recovery preparation: a restore point, rollback option, or saved previous installer matters when a graphics, storage, network, or firmware change goes wrong.
- Mixing packages without a record: note the original version, the package installed, the date, and the resulting symptom.
A decision checklist
- Is the PC healthy and the driver offered through normal Windows Update? Install the recommended update and restart.
- Is the item under Optional updates? Install it only when its stated purpose matches a real need.
- Is a device missing, unidentified, or still faulty? Identify the exact hardware and check the official computer or component support page.
- Is the device Surface or another Microsoft-branded product? Use Microsoft’s model-specific package guidance.
- Is the PC managed by an employer or school? Follow the administrator’s approved channel.
- Before any manual installation, verify the model, Windows version, architecture, package notes, and recovery method.
- After installation, restart, test the original function, and keep the working package information for rollback.
What Microsoft’s guidance establishes
Microsoft Support’s consumer guidance says the best way to obtain most Windows driver updates is automatically through Windows Update, and it directs users to the manufacturer when Windows Update cannot find a driver or update. The same guidance warns against downloading drivers from sites other than the manufacturer’s official site. Microsoft’s “Understanding driver updates” material, originally published October 20, 2025, explains why the date shown for a driver should not be treated as a definitive release or quality indicator. Microsoft’s driver-distribution rules page, last updated September 20, 2024, describes the matching and ranking behavior that determines which applicable package Windows selects.
Recommended Free Tools
Those rules support a conditional answer rather than a permanent winner: Windows Update for routine, compatible maintenance; the official manufacturer channel for a specific gap, symptom, or model-dependent requirement.
