Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer, then select Downloads in Home or the left navigation pane. If the file is not there, search for its name or a keyword, and check your browser’s download location. Before opening an unfamiliar file, verify its source and file type.
Open the Downloads folder in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer by pressing Windows key + E, selecting its taskbar icon, or finding it from Start.
- Select Downloads in Home or the left navigation pane.
- Find the file and open it. If its name or type is unexpected, verify where it came from before opening it.
In Windows 11 version 22H2, Downloads is one of the known folders pinned by default in File Explorer Home and the left navigation pane. Those folders no longer appear under This PC by default. If Downloads is missing from the navigation pane, look for it in Home and pin it again using File Explorer’s folder options. Microsoft’s File Explorer guide explains the navigation layout.

Search if the file is not in Downloads
First distinguish between a file that is hard to spot and one saved somewhere else. If it should be in Downloads, search within that folder by typing the filename or a keyword. You can also use taskbar Search to look for a document name or keyword. If you do not know where the file was saved, search This PC; Microsoft notes that this broader search is slower but more in-depth. Microsoft’s Windows search guidance covers these search options.
Check where your browser saves downloads
Browsers can save files somewhere other than the usual Downloads folder. In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Downloads, then check the Location field. Microsoft gives C:Users[your name]Downloads as an example path; your actual location may differ. This menu path is specific to Edge, and other browsers may use different settings. Microsoft’s Edge download-location instructions show where to find it.

Understand a blocked preview or security warning
A file that will not display in File Explorer’s preview pane may still be present and openable. Starting with Windows security updates released on and after October 14, 2025, File Explorer disables preview by default for files downloaded from the internet that carry Mark of the Web, and for files viewed on an Internet Zone file share. Microsoft published the change on October 22, 2025. It is intended to mitigate a vulnerability in which previewing certain files could leak NTLM hashes; it does not mean the download is missing. The preview pane may say: “The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents.” See Microsoft’s explanation of the preview change.
Before opening an unfamiliar download, confirm that you expected it and that it came from a source you trust. Check that its file type matches what you intended to download, and scan it with Microsoft Defender Antivirus or another antivirus tool if you are uncertain. Windows may show a warning for files marked as coming from the internet or another untrusted location. Do not remove a file’s block simply to restore preview; Microsoft advises unblocking only files from trusted sources.
