On Windows 11, first record the complete message and hexadecimal error code, then run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt and follow it with sfc /scannow. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, provide a compatible Windows source instead of repeatedly running the same command.
The command may finish successfully, fail with a source error, or report that the image is not repairable. Those outcomes require different next steps, so the exact final line matters more than the word “RestoreHealth.”

What a DISM RestoreHealth error means
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth repairs the Windows component store used to service the running installation. The word “RestoreHealth” describes the operation you requested; it does not identify why the operation failed. A missing source, an unavailable Windows Update payload, a version mismatch, or another servicing problem can produce different messages and codes.

Also note whether the command was run against the online installation (/Online) and whether it reached a final status message. A percentage that appears to pause is not, by itself, proof of failure. Treat the operation as failed only after DISM returns an error or an explicit unsuccessful result.
Run Microsoft’s baseline repair sequence
Use an elevated Command Prompt, not a normal console. Administrative rights are required for servicing the online image.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run the online image repair command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM normally obtains repair files for an online image through Windows Update. The progress can remain at one percentage for a while and may take several minutes; there is no universal completion-time guarantee. Keep the window open and do not power off the computer while servicing is in progress.

Windows Update must be able to reach the required servicing content for this default route to work. A device can have general internet access while update services are disabled, restricted by policy, or unable to provide the matching package. Those conditions can turn an otherwise valid command into a source-related failure.
- When DISM finishes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft’s support sequence places DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the component files SFC may need to replace corrupted protected system files. Let SFC reach 100 percent and read its final result rather than closing the window immediately.
If DISM completes successfully but SFC still reports corrupted files, retain both final messages. They describe different layers of Windows servicing, and the SFC result can be useful when asking for further help.
Choose the correct repair source
For an online repair, DISM first tries Windows Update. This route is appropriate when the device can reach Windows Update and the service can provide files matching the installed Windows 11 image.
If Windows Update cannot supply the payload, the command can name another source. Microsoft supports a working Windows installation and files located on a network share or removable media. A random ISO or copied Windows folder is not automatically valid: it must contain the files required by the installed edition and build.
| Source route | When it fits | What can prevent success |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update (default) | The PC has usable connectivity and update services can provide the repair payload. | Blocked connectivity, disabled or failing update services, policy restrictions, or unavailable matching files. |
| Explicit local, network, or removable-media source | Windows Update cannot provide the files, or an administrator has a known-good matching installation source. | The path is wrong, required files are absent, or the source runs a different Windows version, edition, or build. |
These routes are alternatives, not a universal ranking. The best source is the one that is reachable and contains compatible files for that installation.
Before choosing an alternate source, identify the target computer’s Windows release, edition, architecture, and servicing state. The source computer or media should correspond to those characteristics. A source that merely says “Windows 11” may still be unsuitable if it represents another release or edition and lacks the package DISM is trying to repair.
Repair with an alternate source
Microsoft’s example uses a local folder named C:RepairSourceWindows. Replace that placeholder with the actual folder containing the Windows repair files:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
/Source tells DISM where to look. /LimitAccess tells it not to contact Windows Update. Use that switch when you deliberately want the specified source, when policy prevents Windows Update access, or when Windows Update is repeatedly failing. Without /LimitAccess, DISM may still use Windows Update as another source.
The source can be on another drive, a network location, or removable media. Quote a path if it contains spaces, for example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:"D:Windows RepairWindows" /LimitAccess
When multiple source locations are supplied through the supported DISM syntax, DISM uses the first location in which it finds the needed files. Order the locations intentionally and verify each one before starting a long repair.
Do not assume that mounting installation media alone solves the problem. The mounted drive letter must point to the folder that actually contains usable Windows repair content, and the elevated console must be able to read it. If the source is on a network share, confirm that the account running the command has read access; if it is removable media, confirm that Windows assigned the drive letter you entered.
Match the source to the installed Windows 11 system
A working source computer used for repair should run the same operating-system version as the computer being repaired. In practice, matching the Windows 11 release, edition, architecture, and servicing level matters. A source from a different build may lack a package or contain files that do not apply to the target image.
- Confirm that the source is Windows 11 when the target is Windows 11.
- Use the same architecture, such as 64-bit, as the target installation.
- Prefer a source with the same release and current servicing state, rather than an older installation.
- Check that the path actually contains the Windows files DISM expects, not merely an empty folder or unrelated backup.
If you are using a network path, confirm that the elevated Command Prompt can reach it and that the account running DISM has permission to read the files. If you are using removable media, assign a drive letter and use that letter in /Source.
If the first source location does not contain a needed file, a later location can matter when multiple supported locations are supplied. This makes source order significant: place the most complete, best-matched location first rather than relying on an accidental match.
Use health checks when the failure is unclear
When the output does not clearly identify a missing source, use DISM’s diagnostic options to establish the image state. These commands are context tools, not mandatory additions for every successful repair.

/CheckHealth
/CheckHealth reports whether the component store is healthy, repairable, or non-repairable based on existing detection information. It is a quick status check:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
/ScanHealth
/ScanHealth performs a deeper scan for component-store corruption:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
If the image is reported as repairable, /RestoreHealth is the operation that attempts the repair. If it is reported as non-repairable, do not assume that repeating the same command will change the state; retain the code and logs for a more specific recovery decision.

Neither diagnostic option replaces the need to capture the original failure. A health status tells you how DISM views the component store, while the hexadecimal error and servicing log can identify the package or source-resolution problem involved in the failed operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat error 0x800f081f specifically means
Microsoft defines 0x800f081f as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: the source for a required package or file was not found, with source resolution unsuccessful. That definition is narrow. It does not prove that every RestoreHealth failure has the same cause, and it does not identify which source file is missing on a particular PC.
For this code, check the default Windows Update route first. If Windows Update cannot provide the required content, rerun RestoreHealth with a known-compatible local, network, or removable-media source and use /LimitAccess when you want DISM restricted to that source. Follow the repair attempt with sfc /scannow.
Do not apply the 0x800f081f explanation to a different hexadecimal code merely because the command was the same. Record the other code exactly and use its own documented meaning or the entries in CBS.log to choose the next step.
Read the servicing log after a failed repair
When DISM still fails, preserve the exact code and inspect the servicing record instead of applying unrelated registry edits, permission changes, or third-party “repair” utilities. Microsoft identifies this file as the record of issues DISM found or fixed:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Open File Explorer, paste that path into the address bar, and search the log for the error code or terms such as source, missing, and failed. The log can reveal the package or payload that could not be resolved. Keep the surrounding entries, the command you ran, and the Windows version information together if you need assistance.
A log is more useful when paired with the complete console output. Record whether the command used Windows Update or an explicit source, the exact source path, and whether /LimitAccess was present. If the log contains several attempts, note which entries belong to the latest command so an adviser does not diagnose an older failure.
Common mistakes that make RestoreHealth fail
Running without elevation
A normal Command Prompt may not have permission to service the online image. Close it and reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
Assuming every error is 0x800f081f
Only the documented code 0x800f081f carries the “source missing” meaning described above. Other hexadecimal codes require their own interpretation. Do not force a source-file diagnosis when the output does not say that.

An arbitrary installation image, another edition, or an older build may not contain the required package. Verify compatibility before retrying, and do not claim that any ISO will work.
Leaving a placeholder path unchanged
C:RepairSourceWindows is an example path. It works only if that exact folder exists and contains suitable repair files. Substitute the real path on your system.
Blocking Windows Update unintentionally
/LimitAccess prevents Windows Update from being used. That is useful when an alternate source is deliberate, but it can cause failure if the specified source is incomplete. Remove the switch when you want DISM to use Windows Update normally.
Stopping the process too soon
DISM can take several minutes and may appear to pause. Interrupting it can leave the repair incomplete. Wait for a final status message before moving to SFC or another attempt.
Repeating the same failed command without new evidence
If Windows Update cannot provide the payload, rerunning the identical command does not add a source. Capture the code, determine whether the image is repairable, and change only the relevant variable: use a compatible source, adjust source access, or investigate the log.
A practical decision path
- Capture the evidence. Save the complete output and hexadecimal code.
- Retry correctly if necessary. Use an elevated Command Prompt and run RestoreHealth once, allowing it to finish.
- Run SFC. After DISM completes, execute
sfc /scannow. - Identify a source failure. If the message says files or source content are missing, prepare a compatible Windows installation, network share, or removable-media source.
- Specify that source. Replace the example path in the
/Sourcecommand and choose/LimitAccessonly when Windows Update should be excluded. - Diagnose rather than guess. Use
/CheckHealthor/ScanHealthfor image status, then consultCBS.logif repair still fails.
This process separates an ordinary online repair from a genuine source-resolution problem and leaves a usable record for any further support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I run SFC before DISM?
Microsoft’s sequence runs DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth first and sfc /scannow afterward. DISM repairs the component files that SFC may need.
Does 0x800f081f always mean my ISO is bad?
No. Microsoft defines it as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING, meaning a required package or file source was not found. The cause may be unavailable Windows Update content, an incorrect path, missing files, or an incompatible source.
Can I use any Windows 11 ISO as the DISM source?
No. The source must contain the required files and match the target installation’s Windows version, edition, architecture, and servicing state. A random or older image may fail.
What does /LimitAccess do?
It prevents DISM from using Windows Update. Use it when you intentionally want repair restricted to the specified local, network, or removable-media source; omit it when Windows Update should remain available.
Where can I find details after RestoreHealth fails?
Check %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log and search around the error code or terms such as source, missing, and failed. Keep the matching console output and source details.
The Bottom Line
Find the exact DISM code before choosing a fix. Run the elevated Windows Update repair, follow it with SFC, and use a compatible local, network, or removable-media source only when Windows Update cannot provide the required files. For 0x800f081f, focus on source resolution; for any other code, preserve the output and consult CBS.log instead of guessing.
