Windows 11 autocorrect: Which typing controls fit your needs?

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To enable or disable Windows 11 autocorrect, press Windows logo key+I, open Time & language > Typing, and switch Autocorrect misspelled words. Turn it on to let Windows automatically replace some misspellings; turn it off to keep your typed text unchanged.

That switch controls automatic replacement only. Windows has separate controls for red spelling highlights, predictive suggestions on a physical keyboard, touch-keyboard behavior, Office proofing, and typing personalization. Choosing the right control prevents you from disabling a useful feature when your actual problem is an app-specific correction or an on-screen keyboard.

Turn Windows 11 autocorrect on or off

The setting is available in the Windows 11 Settings app, so no download, subscription, repair utility, or additional purchase is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows logo key+I to open Settings. You can also open Start and select the Settings gear.
  2. Select Time & language in the left column.
  3. Choose Typing.
  4. Find Autocorrect misspelled words.
  5. Switch the control On to allow automatic corrections or Off to stop Windows from changing misspelled words.

There is no Apply button in this workflow. After you change the switch, close Settings and test it in a text field that uses Windows typing services. The result can differ between applications because some editors perform their own proofing.

Microsoft lists this control in its Windows Backup Settings Catalog. The switch applies to Windows features that use this Windows typing behavior, but it does not override every application’s own proofing engine.

If your Settings layout looks different

Windows releases can change wording or navigation. In Settings, use the search box and enter autocorrect or Typing, then open the matching typing settings page. Search is safer than assuming a label has remained identical across builds. Make sure the result is the Windows typing page and that you are changing the full control named Autocorrect misspelled words, not a similarly worded suggestion or privacy option.

What the switch actually does

When enabled, Windows may automatically replace a recognized misspelling while you type. When disabled, Windows leaves that text unchanged at the Windows level. Disabling it does not promise that every program will stop changing words, because Word and other editors can have independent AutoCorrect settings. It also does not erase words Windows has learned, hide spelling marks, or remove the touch keyboard.

Choose whether spelling errors are highlighted

Automatic correction and visual spelling marks are independent. If you disable Autocorrect misspelled words but leave Highlight misspelled words enabled, Windows can leave your words as typed while still showing a spelling indicator. This is useful when you want to review errors yourself instead of accepting a silent replacement.

  1. Open Settings with Windows logo key+I.
  2. Go to Time & language > Typing.
  3. Change Highlight misspelled words separately from the autocorrect switch.

Turn highlighting off only if you also want to remove the visible spelling marks. Turning it off does not, by itself, determine whether automatic replacement is allowed. The two switches are documented separately by Microsoft in the settings catalog linked above.

A common mistake is to turn off highlighting and assume autocorrect is disabled. That can leave automatic replacements active while removing the warning that would have helped you notice them. Conversely, turning off autocorrect while retaining highlighting gives you a review-first setup: your original wording remains visible, and possible errors are still marked.

Stop or enable predictive text suggestions

Some people call the words that appear above the cursor “autocorrect,” but Windows treats them as text suggestions. Suggestions predict possible next words or spellings; selecting one inserts it, while dismissing it leaves your text alone. They are controlled separately from automatic correction.

Physical keyboard suggestions

  1. Open Settings with Windows logo key+I.
  2. Select Time & language > Typing.
  3. Find Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard.
  4. Turn the setting on to display suggestions or off to hide them.

Microsoft’s instructions for this feature are in Enable text suggestions in Windows. That guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; the path above uses the Windows 11 labels.

Suggestions are optional prompts, not forced corrections. You can select a proposed word or dismiss it, so enabling suggestions does not mean Windows will automatically replace every misspelling. If your complaint is a pop-up list or predicted words above the cursor, change this setting rather than the autocorrect switch.

These controls can be combined in several sensible ways:

Goal Autocorrect misspelled words Highlight misspelled words Physical-keyboard text suggestions
Let Windows replace likely misspellings but show no spelling marks On Off Your choice
Keep your exact text while still seeing possible errors Off On Your choice
Keep your exact text and hide spelling indicators and suggestions Off Off Off
Use automatic correction and predictive suggestions On Your choice On

The table concerns Windows typing controls only. An application can still add another layer of suggestions or corrections, so verify behavior in the program where you write most often.

Why Windows may still change words after you switch autocorrect off

The Windows switch is not a universal command for every text editor. Individual applications can run their own spelling or AutoCorrect systems. Microsoft documents separate proofing controls for Office applications in Check spelling and grammar in Office.

Check an Office application

If a word is still being replaced in Word or another Office program, open that program’s spelling, proofing, or AutoCorrect options and inspect its automatic-correction setting. Disable the application-level option there if you want that program to leave words unchanged. You may keep Windows autocorrect enabled for other supported text fields while disabling it only in the application.

Office can also provide grammar checking and other proofing features. A red or other visible mark in Word therefore does not identify the Windows setting that caused it. Check the application’s own proofing page when the symptom appears only inside Office.

Check the specific field and program

Type the same unusual word in a basic Windows text field and in the application where the problem occurs. If only one program changes it, that program is the likely source. If both fields behave the same way, recheck the Windows Typing controls, including autocorrect, highlighting, and physical-keyboard suggestions. This comparison does not prove that every other application behaves identically, but it helps separate a Windows setting from app-specific proofing.

Autocorrect is not the touch keyboard setting

The touch keyboard is Windows’ on-screen input method. Its appearance, taskbar icon, and when it opens are controlled separately from spelling correction. Turning off the touch keyboard or hiding its icon will not switch off autocorrect for a physical keyboard, and enabling autocorrect will not make the touch keyboard appear.

For information about the on-screen keyboard and its visibility controls, see Microsoft’s Get to know the touch keyboard and Enable and disable the touch keyboard in Windows. Use those instructions when your issue is an unwanted keyboard panel, a missing keyboard icon, or a keyboard that appears at the wrong time rather than changed words.

Autocorrect is not the typing-personalization control

Windows 11 can build a custom word list from words you type or write to improve typing and inking accuracy. Microsoft places the related privacy choice under Inking & typing personalization, not beside the autocorrect switch. The privacy explanation is in Speech, voice activation, inking, typing, and privacy.

Disabling autocorrect therefore does not automatically disable typing personalization, erase a custom word list, or change how Windows handles that data. If your concern is learned words or personalization, open the privacy controls described by Microsoft and adjust that setting independently. Likewise, changing the personalization option should not be described as a replacement for the autocorrect control: they address different behavior.

Common situations and the right setting

“Windows changes a name or technical term”

Turn Autocorrect misspelled words off under Time & language > Typing. Leave Highlight misspelled words on if you still want a visual reminder to review ordinary spelling errors.

“I want spell-check marks but no automatic replacements”

Set Autocorrect misspelled words to Off and Highlight misspelled words to On. If suggestion pop-ups are also distracting, turn off Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard.

“I want suggestions, not silent replacements”

Turn autocorrect off and physical-keyboard text suggestions on. Suggestions can be selected or dismissed; they are not the same control as automatic correction.

“Only Word keeps correcting me”

Inspect Word’s proofing or AutoCorrect options. Office applications can maintain their own spelling and grammar settings, so changing Windows may not change that application’s behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A keyboard panel keeps appearing”

Review the touch-keyboard settings and taskbar controls rather than autocorrect. The on-screen keyboard’s visibility is a separate Windows feature.

“I am worried about words Windows has learned”

Review Inking & typing personalization in Windows privacy settings. The autocorrect switch controls automatic replacement; it does not delete a custom word list or independently turn off personalization.

Troubleshooting when the switch appears ineffective

  • Confirm the exact control: Make sure you changed Autocorrect misspelled words, not only highlighting or text suggestions.
  • Test in another text field: A single app may be applying its own proofing rules.
  • Check the app’s language and proofing options: Office and other editors can have independent settings.
  • Use Settings search: Search for autocorrect or Typing if navigation labels differ on your Windows build.
  • Separate input-method symptoms: If the issue involves an on-screen keyboard, taskbar icon, or keyboard opening automatically, consult touch-keyboard controls instead.
  • Separate privacy symptoms: If you are concerned about learned words or a custom dictionary, review Inking & typing personalization; the autocorrect switch does not manage it.
  • Retest after each change: Change one related setting at a time, then type the same test word. This makes it easier to identify whether the replacement, mark, or suggestion disappeared.

Do not assume that a missing red underline means autocorrect is off, or that a suggestion bubble means a word was automatically changed. Those are different symptoms and map to different controls.

What changes when you turn autocorrect back on

Returning to Time & language > Typing and switching Autocorrect misspelled words on restores Windows’ automatic-correction behavior where supported. Your choices for highlighting, physical-keyboard suggestions, touch-keyboard visibility, Office proofing, and typing personalization remain whatever you set for those features; enabling autocorrect does not synchronize the other controls.

If you previously turned off several options while troubleshooting, restore them individually. For example, enabling autocorrect does not automatically restore spelling highlights or text suggestions. Check each switch against the behavior you want.

Frequently asked questions

These answers address the distinctions that most often cause confusion when changing Windows typing behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off autocorrect in Windows 11?

Press Windows logo key+I, go to Time & language > Typing, and switch Autocorrect misspelled words off. Test in the app where the unwanted replacement occurs, because that app may have its own AutoCorrect setting.

Can I keep spell-check marks while disabling autocorrect?

Yes. Turn Autocorrect misspelled words off and leave Highlight misspelled words on. Windows will leave your text unchanged while still showing spelling indicators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I turn off suggested words but keep autocorrect?

In Time & language > Typing, turn off Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard. Leave Autocorrect misspelled words on if you still want automatic correction.

Why does Word still correct words after I changed Windows settings?

Office applications maintain separate spelling, grammar, and AutoCorrect options. Open Word’s proofing or AutoCorrect settings and disable its automatic-correction option if needed.

Does disabling autocorrect delete my custom word list?

No. Windows’ custom word list and the Inking & typing personalization privacy control are separate from Autocorrect misspelled words. Change the privacy setting independently if your concern is learned words or typing data.

Is the touch keyboard controlled by autocorrect?

No. The touch keyboard’s appearance, taskbar icon, and opening behavior have separate controls. Change those settings when the problem is an on-screen keyboard rather than altered text.

The Bottom Line

For Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Typing and change Autocorrect misspelled words. Keep Highlight misspelled words on if you want marks without replacements, manage physical-keyboard suggestions separately, and check an individual app when it continues correcting text.
