When a Windows 11 PC is paired with an Android 10 or later phone through Link to Windows, Resume is enabled by default once the requirements are met. Open a supported app on the phone, perform a supported activity, and Windows can place a phone-badged app icon on the taskbar. Select that alert to open the corresponding PC app and continue where you stopped.
If no alert appears, the usual causes are an incomplete Mobile devices connection, Link to Windows being prevented from running in the background, an unsupported app or action, an offline device, or a rollout that has not reached the PC yet. The checks and exact settings paths below isolate each case.

What Windows 11 App Resume does
Resume is a continuity feature connecting a linked Android phone with a Windows 11 PC. Microsoft describes it as a way to continue an activity between the two devices with a single-click alert delivered on the taskbar.
The phone-side app publishes an activity that Windows recognizes. For a supported activity, Windows displays the app icon with a phone badge on the taskbar. Clicking the badge opens the corresponding PC app so you can continue the activity instead of starting over manually. The feature is not a separate utility or a paid add-on.

Windows Resume also provides a framework that app developers can use to publish activity context from apps on other platforms. That is why Resume works only with apps and actions that have implemented support; installing Link to Windows alone does not make every Android app resumable.
Requirements before you try to enable Resume
Check every item in this table before troubleshooting the alert. A missing item can prevent the feature from appearing even though phone pairing seems complete.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Windows edition | The computer is running Windows 11. | Resume is a Windows 11 feature. |
| Android version | The phone runs Android 10 or a later release. | Earlier Android versions are outside the stated compatibility requirement. |
| Internet | Both the PC and phone have an active internet connection. | Resume needs the devices online to exchange activity information. |
| Link to Windows | Link to Windows is installed on the phone and connected to the PC. | The service provides the phone-to-PC connection used by Resume. |
| Mobile devices registration | The phone appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices on the PC. |
Windows must recognize the phone as a managed mobile device. |
| Supported activity | The app and the action you perform are among the supported combinations. | An unsupported app cannot generate a Resume alert. |
There is one additional availability condition: Microsoft introduced Resume through a gradual rollout. A correctly configured PC can therefore lack the feature temporarily while the rollout reaches that device.
How to turn on Windows 11 App Resume
Follow these steps in order. The labels are the current Windows 11 paths described by Microsoft.
Step 1: Open Mobile devices settings
- On the PC, open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Mobile devices.
This page is where Windows controls access to phones associated with the computer. If your phone is not shown here, complete the connection in the next steps before testing Resume.
Step 2: Allow Windows to access mobile devices
- Turn on Allow this PC to access your mobile devices.
- Select Manage devices.
- Follow the connection flow shown by Windows until the Android phone is listed as connected.
The wording of the pairing prompts can vary slightly by Windows build, but the required control is the Allow this PC option and the Manage devices link beneath it.

Step 3: Confirm Link to Windows on the phone
- Open Link to Windows on the Android phone.
- Complete any remaining connection or permission prompts.
- Allow Link to Windows to run in the background.
Microsoft specifically recommends background operation for reliable Resume alerts. If Android pauses the service whenever it is not on screen, the PC may not receive the activity even though the devices were paired earlier.
Step 4: Trigger a supported activity
Resume does not display a test alert merely because pairing is finished. Open a supported app and do the action that Windows can continue. For example, open Spotify on the phone and start playing a track or podcast episode.
Step 5: Select the taskbar Resume alert
After the supported activity starts, watch the Windows taskbar for the app icon carrying a phone badge. Select that icon. Windows should open the corresponding PC app and take you into the activity that was published by the phone.
When the prerequisites are satisfied, Microsoft says Resume is enabled by default. Consequently, you may not find a separate switch named Turn on Resume in the Mobile devices page. Pairing, permissions, background operation, and a supported activity are the practical activation steps.
Why the Resume alert may be missing
Use the branch that matches what you see rather than changing unrelated Windows settings.

The phone is absent from Mobile devices
Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices. If the phone is not listed, turn on Allow this PC to access your mobile devices, choose Manage devices, and run the connection flow again. Resume cannot start until Windows recognizes the phone on this page.

Link to Windows is connected but not active in the background
Open Link to Windows on the phone and check that it is permitted to run in the background. Microsoft identifies this permission as important to reliable Resume operation. Recheck it if the alert worked previously and then stopped after phone power-management changes.
One device is offline
Verify that the PC and phone each have an internet connection. Resume requires both devices to be online; a local Bluetooth pairing indicator by itself does not establish that the activity can be delivered.
The app or action is unsupported
Resume is activity-specific. An app can be installed and fully usable on Android without publishing an activity that Windows can continue. Test with one of the supported combinations listed in the next section, and perform the documented action rather than simply opening the app.

Microsoft’s August 22, 2025 Insider announcement described Resume as a gradual rollout. If the phone is listed, Link to Windows runs in the background, both devices are online, and a supported action still produces no alert, the PC may be waiting for rollout. In that situation, setup can be correct even though the taskbar badge is not yet available.
The alert is easy to overlook
The expected signal is an app icon with a phone badge on the Windows taskbar, not necessarily a large dialog in the middle of the screen. Look at the taskbar immediately after starting the supported phone activity and select the phone-marked icon.
Supported apps and actions
Microsoft’s list current to January 2026 names these examples. Support is tied to the specific activity, so the table does not imply that every function inside an app can be resumed.

| App | Supported continuation | Phone qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Continue music playback or a podcast episode after starting playback on the phone. | Android phone connected through Link to Windows. |
| vivo Browser | Continue browsing. | Listed by Microsoft for vivo phone users. |
| Continue chat conversations. | Android phone connected through Link to Windows. |
The supported catalog can change as developers publish activity context and Microsoft expands availability. If an app is not listed or its particular action does not produce a badge, treat that as unsupported rather than as proof that your pairing is broken.

Turn Resume off or limit individual apps
You can disable the feature without removing the phone connection.
- Open Settings on the Windows 11 PC.
- Select Apps.
- Open Resume.
- Toggle Resume off to stop Resume alerts.
The same Settings > Apps > Resume page provides controls for individual supported apps. Use those per-app controls when you want to keep continuity available for one app but prevent alerts from another.
How Resume compares with other ways to continue an activity
Resume is best understood by the four constraints that determine whether it works: phone operating system, connection method, supported app coverage, and rollout status.
| Decision point | Windows 11 Resume | What the point means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Phone compatibility | Android 10 or later. | An iPhone or an older Android release does not meet the stated requirement for this feature. |
| Connection | Link to Windows on the phone plus the PC’s Mobile devices pairing. | Both the app connection and the Windows permission must be established. |
| App coverage | Only apps and actions that publish supported activity context. | There is no universal resume button for every Android app. |
| Availability | Built into Windows 11, subject to Microsoft’s rollout. | A correctly configured PC may need to wait if the rollout has not reached it. |
| Cost | No separate Resume utility or purchase. | The relevant requirement is a compatible, connected Android phone, not a subscription. |
This makes Resume different from simply launching an app on the PC: the taskbar badge is generated from a phone activity that Windows recognizes. It also differs from a generic phone-mirroring tool because Resume is limited to published app contexts and opens the corresponding PC experience.
What happens technically when an app supports Resume
A supported phone app publishes activity context describing what the user was doing. Windows receives that context through the linked-device relationship and exposes it as a taskbar Resume badge. Selecting the badge passes the user into the corresponding Windows app, where the developer’s implementation determines how much of the activity can be continued.
This model explains three common observations:
- Pairing alone does not create an alert; an app must publish a supported activity.
- Opening an app without performing its supported action may not produce a badge.
- Two apps can behave differently even when they use the same Link to Windows connection, because each app defines its own continuity support.
A concise diagnostic checklist
When you need a quick pass through the essentials, use this order:
Quick Recap
- Confirm the PC is running Windows 11 and the phone is running Android 10 or later.
- Confirm both devices have internet access.
- On the PC, open
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devicesand verify that the phone is listed. - Make sure Allow this PC to access your mobile devices is enabled and that the phone connection was completed through Manage devices.
- Open Link to Windows on the phone and permit background operation.
- Test a documented combination, such as starting a Spotify track or podcast episode.
- Look for the phone-badged icon on the taskbar.
- If every check passes and no badge appears, account for Microsoft’s gradual rollout rather than repeatedly changing the same settings.
Key limitations to keep in mind
- Resume is currently an Android-to-Windows feature under the stated Android 10-or-later requirement.
- It depends on Link to Windows and the Mobile devices permission; it is not an independent taskbar plug-in.
- Its usefulness is limited by the apps and actions that support Windows activity context.
- Availability can differ between otherwise similar Windows 11 PCs while Microsoft’s rollout proceeds.
- Microsoft has not published a relevant adoption, usage, or performance statistic for Resume, so there is no official percentage or speed figure to use when judging it.
