For most people replacing Windows 11, Linux Mint is the safest general-purpose starting point. Choose Zorin OS if a Windows-like layout matters most, Ubuntu if you want extensive official setup documentation, Fedora Workstation if you prefer newer software and accept more frequent upgrades, or Kubuntu if you specifically want the KDE Plasma desktop. Whichever you choose, test the exact computer from a live USB first: Linux support for a hardware category or Windows application does not guarantee that your particular device or program will work.
Which Linux distribution is the best Windows 11 alternative?
There is no single Linux replacement that behaves exactly like Windows 11. A Linux distribution combines a kernel, desktop interface, software repositories, installers, update policy and support model. Those choices affect how familiar the screen feels, how often major upgrades arrive, which applications are easy to install and how much troubleshooting you may need.

| Distribution | Best fit | Useful distinction | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint | Most people wanting a conventional desktop | Comfortable, configurable desktop; published hardware requirements; five-year support for LTS releases | Proprietary graphics drivers, including NVIDIA drivers, are not installed by default |
| Zorin OS 18.1 | People who want Windows-like layouts | Based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS; optional Windows App Support; Core and Pro use GNOME Shell, while Lite uses XFCE | Windows App Support does not make every Windows program compatible |
| Ubuntu Desktop | People who value extensive official documentation | Guides cover installation, live testing, software, upgrades, BitLocker and Intel RST | You still need to test your own hardware and applications |
| Fedora Workstation | Readers comfortable with newer technologies and regular upgrades | GNOME desktop, Fedora repositories and Flathub access | Each version receives updates for approximately 13 months |
| Kubuntu | People who prefer KDE Plasma | Ubuntu base with KDE software by default; includes popular programs and a driver-management utility | The KDE workflow is a deliberate desktop choice, not an automatic match for every Windows user |
| openSUSE Leap or Tumbleweed | Users willing to choose a release model deliberately | Leap uses stable regular releases; Tumbleweed is rolling with the latest package versions | Rolling updates require more willingness to follow changes than a fixed-release system |
If you want one default recommendation, start with Mint. If its interface is not your preference, the other choices are credible alternatives for specific priorities rather than random substitutes.

What changes when you move from Windows to Linux?
The visible desktop is only one part of the decision. Compare each candidate on four practical axes:
#1 Best Overall
- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
- Workflow: where the application menu, taskbar, notifications, file manager and settings are located.
- Support and updates: how long a release receives fixes and how often you must make a major version change.
- Hardware and applications: whether your graphics, Wi-Fi, printer, scanner, webcam, accessibility tools and essential programs work on the exact machine.
- Help and installation: the quality of official guides and the amount of community documentation available for a problem you may encounter.
A fifth consideration is how software is delivered. Zorin OS lists APT, Flatpak, Snap, .deb and AppImage packages, with optional .exe and .msi support. Fedora describes access through Fedora repositories and Flathub. A Windows installer file being accepted by a compatibility layer is not the same as the application being fully compatible, stable or supported.
Linux Mint: the most balanced starting point
Linux Mint is aimed at desktop and laptop use and offers a familiar, conventional layout without requiring you to learn a radically different workflow. Its project FAQ describes it as “a free Linux-based operating system designed for use on desktop and laptop computers.” The desktop can be configured to suit different preferences, so you can change panel placement, menus and behavior rather than adapting to one rigid layout.
Published Mint requirements
Mint publishes a minimum of 2GB of RAM, 20GB of disk space and a 1024×768 display resolution. It recommends 4GB of RAM and 100GB of storage for comfortable use. These are the project’s stated requirements, not an independent performance guarantee: an older processor, slow hard drive, unusual graphics adapter or overloaded background software can still make a machine feel slow.
| Mint specification | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum memory | 2GB RAM | Below this, installation or everyday multitasking may be impractical |
| Recommended memory | 4GB RAM | Mint’s recommendation for comfortable use |
| Minimum storage | 20GB | Space for the operating system; personal files and applications need additional room |
| Recommended storage | 100GB | More practical for applications, updates and personal data |
| Minimum display resolution | 1024×768 | The project’s stated display requirement |
| LTS support | Five years | Applies to Mint’s LTS releases, according to the project FAQ |
Mint does not include proprietary graphics drivers by default. The project says those drivers are easy to install, but owners of NVIDIA hardware or another device that depends on a proprietary driver should plan to install and test the driver after the first boot. A live-USB test is especially valuable for checking the display, external monitors, suspend and graphics acceleration before you commit to an installation.
Zorin OS: the most Windows-like option
Zorin OS is designed for people who want a familiar transition. Its 18.1 release is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and lists software updates and security patches through 1 June 2029. The release was initially published on 15 April 2026, so cite that version and date when discussing its support window rather than treating the date as permanent for every future release.
Desktop editions
- Core and Pro: use GNOME Shell and provide the main Zorin desktop experience.
- Lite: uses XFCE and is intended for a lighter desktop experience on less powerful hardware.
Zorin also offers optional Windows App Support. That can be useful when investigating whether a particular Windows application has a workable Linux path, but it is not a compatibility guarantee. Check the program’s publisher, required plugins, hardware acceleration, file formats, licensing and online-service dependencies before relying on it for school or work.

Software formats in Zorin
Zorin lists several ways to install software: APT, Flatpak, Snap, .deb and AppImage packages, plus optional handling of .exe and .msi files. Multiple formats increase choice, but they can also create duplicate applications with different update behavior. Prefer the distribution’s normal package source or an application publisher’s documented Linux package, and keep one installation method for each critical program where possible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ubuntu Desktop: the documentation-first choice
Ubuntu is a strong choice when the quality and breadth of official instructions matter more than reproducing the Windows interface. Its documentation covers the full setup path, including installing Ubuntu, trying it without changing the computer, managing software, upgrading, and special cases involving BitLocker or Intel RST.
That documentation does not remove the need for a hardware test. A guide can explain the general procedure, but it cannot prove that a particular laptop’s Wi-Fi chipset, fingerprint reader, webcam, dock, printer or sleep behavior will work. Treat Ubuntu’s live session as a compatibility check, not merely a preview of the wallpaper and menus.
Fedora Workstation: newer software with a shorter support cycle
Fedora Workstation uses the GNOME desktop and provides applications through Fedora repositories, with additional access through Flathub. It suits readers who want current technologies and are comfortable making major version changes more often than they would with a long-term-support distribution.
Fedora says each version receives updates for approximately 13 months. That is materially shorter than Linux Mint’s stated five-year LTS support period. Before choosing Fedora for a work computer, decide whether you are willing to plan an upgrade roughly once a year and keep recovery media and backups ready. The shorter cadence can bring newer hardware and desktop improvements sooner, but it gives you less time to postpone a release transition.
Kubuntu and the KDE Plasma route
Kubuntu combines an Ubuntu base with KDE software by default. KDE describes it as Ubuntu with the KDE Plasma desktop and notes that the default installation includes popular programs and a driver-management utility.

- FAT32 Format: The default file system for 8GB flash drives is FAT32, providing read/write compatibility with both Windows and macOS. This format is ideal for storing music, photos, videos, software installers and general document files. Pro Tip: Maximize performance by reformatting to your optimal file system.(FAT32: Universal compatibility (files under 4GB); exFAT: Cross-platform large file support; NTFS: Advanced Windows features (encryption/compression))
- LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
Plasma is highly configurable. Its panels, launchers, window controls and desktop effects can be arranged in a way that feels close to Windows, but it also supports very different layouts. Choose Kubuntu because you prefer Plasma’s workflow and customization, not simply because it has a taskbar. The same application and hardware checks still apply.
When openSUSE Leap or Tumbleweed makes sense
KDE’s distribution overview distinguishes two very different openSUSE choices:
- Leap: a stable distribution with regular releases. It is the more predictable choice when you want planned changes.
- Tumbleweed: a rolling distribution that continually delivers the latest package versions. It reduces big release jumps but requires you to stay comfortable with frequent package changes.
For a first Windows replacement, select the release model you can maintain. A rolling system is not automatically less reliable, but it asks you to read update notices, keep backups and investigate problems soon after they appear.

Check your applications and devices before replacing Windows
Write down every task that would make the switch fail if it stopped working. Include the exact application name and version, not just a category such as “office” or “editing.” Also list the devices that connect to the computer.
Must-have application checklist
- Work or school applications, including required plugins and sign-in methods
- Specialized accounting, engineering, medical, publishing or communication software
- Microsoft Office files, macros, templates and collaboration features you must preserve
- Games, anti-cheat systems, launchers and controllers
- Printers, scanners, label makers and vendor-specific utilities
- Backup, password-management, accessibility and security tools
- Media workflows that depend on particular codecs, cameras or capture hardware
Hardware checklist
- Internal Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, including reconnecting after suspend
- Graphics output, external monitors, docking stations and brightness controls
- Webcam, microphone, speakers and headset switching
- Fingerprint readers, smart-card readers and other authentication hardware
- Printers, scanners, gamepads, drawing tablets and storage devices
- Sleep, wake, battery charging and fan behavior
Do not infer compatibility from a distribution’s general hardware-support statement. The exact chipset, firmware and peripheral model determine the result. Zorin’s optional Windows App Support is one example of a broad feature that still cannot establish compatibility with a specific Windows program.
Try Linux safely from an 8GB USB flash drive
A live USB lets you start a distribution without immediately replacing Windows. Ubuntu’s installation guide specifies an 8GB USB flash drive or larger for creating installation media and says the same media can be used to test Ubuntu without changing the PC configuration or to begin installation. Check the selected distribution’s current image-size instructions before choosing the drive.

Use an empty drive. Writing an installer image destroys all data already on that USB stick, so copy its contents elsewhere first and verify the backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Back up Windows first. Copy personal files to a separate drive or trusted backup service. Do not rely on the USB installer as your only copy.
- Download the chosen distribution’s current image from its official project site and read the release notes for hardware or installation warnings.
- Prepare the USB stick. On Windows, Ubuntu’s guide describes using Rufus. Select the intended USB device carefully; choosing the wrong drive can erase another disk.
- Boot from the USB. Restart the computer and use its boot-device key or firmware menu to select the USB drive. The key varies by manufacturer.
- Choose the live-session option. Do not select an erase-and-install option while you are still testing.
- Exercise the machine. Connect Wi-Fi, play audio, test the webcam, adjust brightness, attach your printer, open an external monitor and suspend and resume the computer.
- Test critical software paths. Open representative documents, visit required web services and confirm whether a Linux-native application or documented compatibility method meets your needs.
- Shut down and remove the USB when finished. If a device fails in the live session, record the exact model and error before searching the distribution’s current help pages.
A live session is a first filter, not a long-term performance test. It may not reveal sustained heat, battery life, every sleep-state problem, a high-volume print workflow or the behavior of a demanding game.

Protect files and recovery options
Keep a verified backup of documents, photos, browser data, license information and any encryption-recovery keys. Create or confirm Windows recovery media if you may need to restore the original system. Keep the installer USB separate from your backup drive.
Check encryption and storage settings
Ubuntu’s official documentation includes separate guidance for BitLocker and Intel RST. If Windows has an encrypted drive or the firmware uses Intel RST, read the current instructions before changing partitions, storage-controller settings or boot options. Do not disable a security or storage feature casually; understand how the change affects Windows recovery and your personal data.
Choose the installation arrangement
- Replace Windows: the simplest disk layout, but it removes the existing Windows installation and its files. Use this only after backups and live testing.
- Dual boot: keeps both systems, but adds partition, boot-menu and encryption complexity. It also requires enough free disk space for two operating systems and shared data.
- Test on another drive or computer: the lowest-risk way to learn the workflow if you have suitable hardware.
Read every installer summary before confirming a partition change. The wording varies by distribution and release, so rely on the current installer screen rather than an old screenshot.
Choose a support and update model you can live with
| Priority | Better match | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Longer stated support horizon | Linux Mint LTS | The project says LTS releases receive five years of support |
| Windows-like layout | Zorin OS | Its editions focus on familiar layouts and include optional Windows App Support |
| Broad official setup guidance | Ubuntu Desktop | Documentation covers installation, live testing, software, upgrades, BitLocker and Intel RST |
| Newer technologies | Fedora Workstation | Fedora uses a faster release rhythm and states approximately 13 months of updates per version |
| KDE Plasma customization | Kubuntu | Provides Plasma on an Ubuntu base with KDE software by default |
| Choice between regular and rolling releases | openSUSE Leap or Tumbleweed | Leap is stable with regular releases; Tumbleweed is rolling with the latest package versions |
Support duration is only one part of maintenance. A longer support period does not fix an incompatible printer, and a short release cycle is manageable if you schedule upgrades and maintain backups. Match the policy to the computer’s role and your willingness to perform maintenance.
Best Value
- Ultra-compact and portable contoured styling
- Share your photos, videos, songs and other files between computers with ease
- Protect your private files with included SanDisk SecureAccess software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Mac OS X v10.6+ (Software download required for Mac, see official SanDisk Secure Access website for more details.))
- Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)
Common switching problems and what to do
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth does not work in the live session
Record the computer model and the network chipset if the system exposes it. Try a wired connection or a supported USB adapter while checking the distribution’s current hardware guidance. Do not install permanently until you know how updates and drivers will be delivered for that hardware.
The display is low-resolution or an external monitor is missing
Check the cable, dock and display input first. If the computer uses a proprietary graphics driver, remember that Mint does not install such drivers by default. Test the driver path on the live system or after a reversible installation before relying on multiple monitors or graphics acceleration.
A required Windows application will not run
Look for a supported Linux edition, a browser-based version or an export format that preserves your workflow. If you investigate Windows App Support or another compatibility layer, test the exact program, version, plugins and files you use. A program that launches is not necessarily reliable for production work.
The installer reports BitLocker or Intel RST issues
Stop rather than forcing a partition change. Follow the current Ubuntu documentation for the relevant configuration, and make sure your Windows recovery information and backups are available before altering encryption or storage-controller settings.
The live session works but the installed system behaves differently
Compare updates, graphics drivers, firmware settings and boot configuration. Live media can use temporary drivers and a clean session, while an installed system adds startup services, encrypted storage, user settings and updates. Keep notes from the successful live test so you can isolate what changed.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Start with your non-negotiables. If one application or device has no acceptable Linux path, keep Windows available through dual boot, another computer or a virtualized workflow rather than assuming the distribution will solve it.
- Pick the desktop you will enjoy using. Choose Mint for a conventional default, Zorin for a Windows-like transition, Ubuntu for documentation, Fedora for a faster cadence, or Kubuntu for KDE Plasma.
- Match the release policy to your maintenance tolerance. Compare Mint’s five-year LTS statement with Fedora’s approximately 13-month update period and the stable-versus-rolling choice in openSUSE.
- Run a live-USB hardware test. Use an empty 8GB-or-larger USB stick, remember that writing erases it, and test the actual peripherals and workflows.
- Back up and install conservatively. Resolve BitLocker, Intel RST, graphics and storage questions before confirming any partition change.
- Keep a recovery route. Save installation media, recovery information and a backup that does not depend on the new operating system.
