Windows 11 version 26H2 became generally available on September 29, 2026, but Microsoft is offering it gradually to eligible PCs running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. If Windows Update offers it, installing is reasonable for most home users—after checking Microsoft’s current known-issues page, particularly if you use older apps that decode AC-3 audio. Businesses should pilot it before a broad rollout.
How 26H2 is being delivered
Microsoft’s September 29 announcement says the update is rolling out in phases to eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices. On an eligible PC, look under Settings > Windows Update. Turning on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available opts the device into earlier availability when it qualifies; it does not override a compatibility hold. Microsoft may delay an offer if it identifies a compatibility concern.

For many PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2, 26H2 is a small enablement package. Those versions share a servicing branch, and many capabilities associated with 26H2 have already been delivered in monthly updates. The package activates selected features and completes the version change with an install and restart; Microsoft has not established a universal installation time.
What’s inside Windows 11 26H2?
Microsoft describes 26H2 as a release that consolidates and enables capabilities delivered through Windows’ ongoing updates, rather than a single large feature drop. Its feature inventory spans usability, security, accessibility, device management, and connectivity. What appears on a particular PC can depend on its configuration, account, hardware, policy, or staged availability.

Start, taskbar, Search, and File Explorer
- Start: A redesigned menu includes a scrollable All apps view and category or grid views.
- Taskbar: Windows lists placement at the bottom, top, left, or right, plus a smaller taskbar option.
- Search: Search previews and improved handling of typos and partial app names are among the listed changes.
- File Explorer: The inventory includes speed, navigation, archive, and voice-typing improvements.
Security and administration
- Smart App Control: It can be switched on or off without reinstalling Windows.
- Sysmon: The system-monitoring tool is built in but off by default.
- Administrator protection: This is also off by default and can be enabled through management policy.
- Passkeys and cryptography: Windows adds support for credential-manager plugins for passkeys and API support for the post-quantum algorithms ML-KEM and ML-DSA.
Recovery, accessibility, and connectivity
Microsoft lists Windows settings backup and restore, point-in-time restore, Quick machine recovery, device association for Windows Autopilot preparation, and policy-based removal of preinstalled apps. The availability and defaults for these management and recovery capabilities vary between consumer and commercial scenarios.
Accessibility updates include improvements to Magnifier, Narrator, Braille Viewer, and Voice Access. Natural-language Voice Access controls apply to supported Copilot+ PCs, so hardware eligibility and language availability matter. The inventory also includes Bluetooth LE Audio and USB4 dock and hub improvements, as well as Windows Update work intended to reduce restarts by combining eligible updates where possible.
Commercial defaults and a removal that is not new to 26H2
Microsoft’s update history names Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions, and File Explorer improvements as capabilities enabled by default for commercial devices; existing administrator policies remain in effect. Separately, Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) was removed in Windows 11 24H2 and later, so its removal is not a change unique to 26H2.

Known issue to check before installing
As of October 2, 2026, Microsoft’s Windows release health page listed a confirmed issue in which some applications that require AC-3 (Dolby Digital) decoding might fail to launch or close unexpectedly after updates released September 22, 2026, and later. Microsoft said it was working on a resolution. If you depend on older media software or games that may use AC-3, check the page for current status before updating; it can change. The same page marked previously reported USB audio, domain trust, and desktop-loading issues as mitigated.
Should you install 26H2 now or wait?

Installing 26H2 resets the release support period. Microsoft lists 24 months of support for Home and Pro, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. That lifecycle can inform timing, but it does not mean every user needs to install on announcement day.
How to check for the offer
- Open Settings > System > About and check whether the PC is running Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If 26H2 is offered, review Microsoft’s current release-health page before installing.
- If you want earlier availability for eligible updates, turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available on the Windows Update page. A safeguard hold can still delay 26H2.
- If there is no offer, wait for Microsoft’s rollout rather than using unofficial upgrade files or bypasses.
If you want a separate copy of your files before updating, Windows File History can back them up to an external drive or network location. A separate backup is optional preparation, not a requirement for installing 26H2.
